9:10 make sure you have "sample all layers checked" in the options bar for this to work

"layer and below" is an option too
Note: top center of spot healing brush tool is where you have to click the box that says "sample all layers" - cheers!

as an amateur photographer I really appreciate this channel. I often feel limited in my expression just because I don't understand programs. Thank you ...great stuff . At the point where you demonstrate use of the Spot Healing Brush there was no mention of the need to ensure that ‘sample all layers ‘ is checked . If it is not checked then the spot healing brush does not work on the new layer .

TY sir. This if found in the options menu after selecting the Spot Healing Brush. more info on this from: helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/layer-basics.html
The default behavior of the Mixer Brush, Magic Wand, Smudge, Blur, Sharpen, Paint Bucket, Clone Stamp, and Healing Brush tools is to sample color only from pixels on the active layer. This means you can smudge or sample in a single layer.

I just wanted to very sincerely thank you Aaron for this amazing series! I’ve been looking for something like this for many years and all I found was tutorials where I had to have this basic knowledge already. And it was more like; follow steps but don’t know why so couldn’t apply it to other things. Hence I stuck with Lr and was super envious f everyone how could really use Photoshop. I've been out of photoshop for a long while, I purchased photoshop 6 back in the day , and was a member of NAPP ( National Association of Photoshop Professionals) back then. With all the new features it has now, I'm extremely out of the loop and now relearning photoshop. Thankyou for all the tutorials
Aaron, really appreciate your offering this 30 days of PS learning. I am not a newbie, but want to bone up. I started with Day 1, when it got to searching gradient on the help menu I did not have a choice. I am on windows 10 and called Adobe for support to find out where my search is. On windows 10 it is under the menu in PS under EDIT, SEARCH, GRADIENT AND IT WORKS NOW FOR ME. Just for your info in case others are having a problem with this too.
