could not agree more these are the things us or should say me as i am no good at tig welding makes the mistakes i make look not so bad still bad but you get my meaning
it happens to the best of us. some days you just aren't 100% comfortable and steady, and you have to learn to deal with that, and you have to learn how to repair mistakes. it only makes you a better welder.
I wish that your videos were around 40 years ago when i went to tech school for welding i can remember watching hobart school of welding technology vids that would roll your eyes back in your head. you guys are great and are the real deal anyone that wants to learn the trade i would highly recommend looking this guy up.

Im still a (hobby) welder,as I dont do it for a living,but I have taken on some pretty crazy repair that (couldnt be done) nothing that would endanger anyone! Cast brackets for a boat dock were the crem de la crem,but I am self taught ,with your help and the tools you offer(I order regularly) and become pretty efficient in all realms of welding,tig brazing,so for that thank you Sir!
Welding toolboxes around door seals is a very interesting experience. I use a technique where I am welding vertical up on aluminum. Some customers don’t like the dull colour of the weld so I use strips of aluminum guillotined as filler wire
Oh so that's what crummy looks like. Also I very much needed to know that information for inside joints. I make UPS bracket for the company I work at with very small slots with an old transformer with no adjustment settings other than amps and limited balance. Definitely gonna try these tips

In situations like that most of the time I will weld into the corner, away from the edge of the plate. This way the pinch happens in the corner where there is more material and rigidity, and distortion is reduced. So at 12:07 (and likewise at 17:30) I would most of the time start where Roy ended, and weld into the corner feeding, wire from the back and doing a step pause progression with some slight backwards step if needed, to make sure you don't leave any unmelted wire on the bead, as is an issue sometimes with feeding from the back of the puddle.

Switch to a flex head and weld from the outside corner to the inside, all the stress and heat moves on to the stiffer plate slightly less pulling, warping. go in as far as you can, than you than come off the back inside corner into your weld. patterns of pulling of moving things. Another would be torqueing a head cylinder in relationship to welding of stringer and beads.

My question is on the case where you simply wanted to weld up the slots from the back side. If this bracket were steel, you could use little-to-no rod and make a mostly heterogeneous weld. However, a material like 6061 would hot crack unless you could add enough filler to relieve this property. Is there a clever alternative to changing the part fit-up to accept more filler?
That’s the problem I have with aluminum, I feel like if my arc length is close enough to get a puddle to neatly form then it’s too close and I’m going to dab just a tad bit too much and dip. if I extend my arc length I don’t dip but I can’t get a clean puddle to form in the root of my t joint.
Yeah, getting the root to tie in on inside corners is something I see a lot of people having problems with particularly on aluminum. Somethings that can help is a sawtooth motion on the torch as you add filler. Basically start with a tight arc length, then as you go do add filler, lift the torch at the same rate as the puddle grows thus keeping the arc length to puddle distance the same, then as you pull the rod back out, advance the torch forward and down (about a 45° angle) and repeat. Another thing is if the joint is laid out so that one panel is horizontal and the other is vertical, favor the horizontal panel a bit with the arc because heat will naturally rise into the vertical panel.
Im using a Lincoln Squarewave 200 tig on some 6061 aluminum tubing. What type of tungsten would work best for this combo? Should I use a gas lens as well?
where was this video 5 years ago when i was building a cylinder rack for my ski patrol, i looked everywhere for info on how to do a joint like these, ended up cutting a piece of filler rod, sticking it in there to lock up the point, then i had enough room to run the wire past the cup

I have a question about filler rod for tig .. I just did an electrical job on my house. I have quite a few wire cut offs . The wire is e487940 . It's aluminum but supposed to be a mix of some kind. Think it could be used as a practice filler ? Or maybe a good filler ? Thanks
Personally, I wouldn’t use my precision 1-2-3 blocks as welding backers, because they could warp or change dimensions microscopically. It’s right up there with borrowing a machinist’s micrometer to use as an adjustable wrench.

At the 4:15 mark he mentions if you accidently dip to change your tungsten out before continuing. Do actually need to change it out or can you just regrind?
Usually you can grind off any aluminum and resharpen making sure to remove all aluminum or other contaminants. Sometimes there could be a big blob in which case it might be easier to cut the end off and reshape the tip.
I’ve been wanting an excuse to but a TIG welder for a while now but most of my work is on thick heavy metal on seventy year old equipment. What excuse would you give your wife if your farm ‘needed’ a TIG? We are putting up some C Channel beams in our living room that will be aluminum with stainless bracing…think I can honestly say I (want)need TIG
I cooked my eggs on the skillet with foil because I didn't have bacon grease , I spilled a little out of the foil so I Burchard the eggs on pan, didn't burn the eggs in foil, I did add the cheese a little too soon but it was so Freggin delicious, fluffy almost mashed potato (mashed potato eggs, I usually use Kanye pepper black pepper fine grade I also use the ground, add a little water, today I used rainbow pepper, it's what I had. My question is we which gas do I cook eggs on. If this is my brain on drugs what other metals can I cook with eggs? If I had a foil sheet for every metal what sheet would taste best * varies per person, I know I m aware. " Its a goose" I was so good. I also wanted to do egg balls in over or do orgami eggs The metals and variables are endless yes but I dont want blow up putting a car jumper cables together not knowing the positives in negatives
Why can’t or don’t you simply use a roller guided cup to tig? It would be consistent, reduced chance of dipping and be more level than handheld. Also why dip the rod and make a lumpy bead cords of welds , unlike mig which are a series of short circuits make a flat continuous bead like a grout line or melted plastic weld? Beads aren’t stronger than one long bead. I can see with short duty cycles of old small equipment it was necessary but water cooling fixed that. It’s like brazing with gas torch just move along.
I respect seeing accidentally glitches, everyone wants to only show their best bits and not the day to day welding hiccups.

Yes, straight Argon is the norm, unless it is quite heavy wall and then you can add a small amount of Helium.

Regrind is sometimes fine. Sometimes it’s bad enough to cut the tip off and re prep

It welds easier on the inside secondly bc it's warmed up
