Excellent points. But the flip side is knowing when to quit, knowing you've gotten as good as you're gonna get, knowing your own limitations, knowing about diminishing returns, knowing how much you're willing to sacrifice to improve another 5%.

Thank you! As a 62 year old guy that has never grown up and truly been responsible to myself this hits home. So many wasted days, weeks, and years when I could have been applying myself in meaningful ways. The good news is that I still have Today. It is all I will ever have. God bless you and all you love.

Right there with you, Brian. Wasting one's time, energy, and talent is a horrific betrayal to oneself; and I am more than guilty. I wish I would have learned these lessons early in life, but alas, I didn't. While I can't speak for women, I can say that for men, flailing around meaninglessly for years, decades even, is at epidemic proportions.

Vision and focus.....consider your reason and pick your toolbox wisely. Want to stand out? Stand strong and make the bricks from mud.....mine the ore and forge your own signature sword....keeping up with the Jones's is not only pointless but dangerous....I know many musicians that were so good at the everyday everybody everywhere.....they never became them.

I'm 62 as well Brian, and I feel as if I've just been lectured by my dad from when I was 14. My problem is that I have no willpower. None at all. I was born without it. My philosophy has always been "if at first you don't succeed, f**k it"! It's worked well for me though - I've been married and divorced three times and I now live in a grotty little flat over a cake shop dreaming of what could have been. But without willpower, it couldn't 'have been' so I'm blameless! ;)

This is so true, I’m a drummer who dabbles with bass and couldn’t agree more with this. I’ve hit walls in my playing and found it hard to knock them down. Found it easy to sit in my comfort zone though lack of self parenting and really difficult to push myself to practice what I needed to rather than just play and maintain my level. Wise words Scott, love the channel, keep up the great work my man.

Thanks for the true inspiration. I am 62 as well and spent 40 years as a not very good bass player. Always a noodler, never making progress,
lost in the fantasy of being a real musician. What you speak of is so true. Stagnation has too much gravity at times it seems. When Covid hit I decided to really learn, practice and apply myself to learning and playing the bass. I have learned the value of focused, sustained effort resulting in accomplishment in other areas of life. So I practice for an hour every day, my only backsliding is playing the same thing over and again at times. I know better though so working on technique, theory, endurance and musicality. My sessions could use more structure, but I have made what I consider to be great progress. My view on life has become more realistic as I have gotten older, but the motivation is actually stronger. Thanks for speaking truth to bass players

Scott, you are my rock star teacher and inspiration to keep getting better. I am so proud to be a founding LIFE TIME member from your early days here on TH-cam. I don't comment much within the SBL forum but the lineup of great sharing players and teachers is out of this world. Oh, I just turned 64 (I think there's a song similar to my age..but moving on) and have been playing since 14, still grinding and learning how to still get better with my true passion which is playing bass. You spoke truth and dropped the mike on self discipline and clear direction in always working on your craft.

True for everything in Life Scott. I spend time each day learning about music (how it works and why it works), working on my skill set with the instrument, and playing it and having fun at the end of the hard stuff. This is so true! Nothing will come all by itself. I play the bass every single day for at least 10 minutes, not noodling away but really focussing on patterns that I find hard to play. I isolate them, analyze them and play them over and over and over again. This strategy has worked miracles for me. Currently, I am learning Teen Town by Jaco Pastorius. Initially, everything went wrong and I felt like a complete loser on the instrument. But I persevered and now I almost have the tune under my fingers. It's all about self discipline and dedication.

Well said Scott. As an older guy I (64) I still feel young. But sometimes when I want to push (gently and polite) my musical friends to a higher level I feel misunderstood. I consider myself as a modest musician with a good packech of experience (started on guitar at the age of 13, teaching myself chords, and went to the bass at 17). Never the less all these beautiful musical years I try to get beter by puching myself to do the work. Transcribing the chords of the songs for the keys, guitars and the bass lines, isolate sertain parts. A lot of work that is not seen by the listeners and even colleague musicians. All by all I love doing this. Thank for your passionate testimony. Keep up the good vibes. Cheers Jan

Hey dude just want to let you know your message is well received and I absolutely agree with you. I only just started realizing the potential I had, of course life is complicated and sometimes you need to clean out the gutters of your mind before you can even begin to think about pursuing an art form like this. Advice to anyone out there who feels triggered: you need to do some deep cleaning of your mind. You need to pay attention to why you do what you do. Why are you getting distracted, why are you abusing drugs…cover your bases: getting enough sleep, diet, exercise and then start meditating. Process all your shit. When your mind is clear enough, you can actually decide if this is what you wanna focus on, instead of half assing every bit of something you do, you can channel your energy into becoming a master of something.

Preaching to the choir here.... I'm in my early mid 60's and over the last couple of years I've only gotten better thanks to channels like this. I am a progressive rock, blues and country player that has chosen to step out of my comfort zone and really sit down and push myself at getting a better grasp on understanding scales and shapes etc and now I can really hear it in my playing when I record. Something worth a mention: Some people no matter what the instrument is they play are naturally wired to be able to learn and play really technical stuff with little effort because they are just wired that way while others are only able to ace simpler styles of music but regardless you're correct that in the end you have to seriously apply yourself no matter how you are musically wired especially if you're someone who wants to stay busy gigging. I started off on guitar and that really helped me on bass and in my opinion the better bass players start off as piano player and/or rhythm guitar player.

Dealing with this now. When I studied classical piano in college I was on a routine, if I didn’t practice and consistently get better, I got bad grades. I had to dial it in. Now 4 years later I’ve started learning Bass and have a good foundation but I know I can do so much more. It’s time to get back to the days of wanting to just be better. Going to pick up my bass everyday now. Rock on 🤟🏾

I've been playing bass for 16 years now. And for me it's a weekend hobby. I play classic rock and Metal songs. And after all these years I only consider myself as an ok bass player. But I know it's my fault for not pushing myself farther and advancing myself to become a better bass player. But I'm totally ok with that because I'm happy with my playing abilities and having fun on the weekends. My goals for playing bass was never to join a band and play. It was always meant to learn the songs that I really like and play as a hobby on the weekends. So I've never really felt the need to push myself harder and to learn more and become a great bass player. But I understand what you're saying Scott. You are a really great teacher and you really give great advice to people.🙂🤘

Great word, Scott! I've always had desire and inspiration, but have lacked discipline. Making excuses is far easier than making progress. Time for a change!

So true, but I'd never thought about it in that way before. A real lesson for life, thank you.

I was really worried that this would be an ad for a course or something, but it's honestly just some damn good advice! I think we all needed this wakeup call. I really appreciate it.

Thanks Scott. Well said and appreciated. At 62, I can look back and see the start, stop, and start again fueled by self doubt. Once I realized yes I can, if I am willing to stay focused and put in the work, things changed. My work habits changed. And it is paying off. My playing is noticeably improved from what it was 5 years ago.

I'm a guitarist primarily, but about a year ago I really started pushing myself to learn how to play bass like a bass and not a guitar. I had to unlearn so many habits that I'd developed over decades, but once I started to develop good bass habits my music buddies really noticed and we started a cover band. We're all playing instruments that aren't our primary instruments, and it's been so fun watching each other "start over" but quickly become skilled enough to play songs together. If I hadn't dedicated myself to practicing for hours a day there's no way I'd feel comfortable being the bassist in a band, even if it's just for fun. Now I'm catching up to the REAL bass player in the group, and I think he's a little jealous.

One of the things I love about SBL is that (despite the clickbait titles on YT videoes) it is always clear that you have to put in the work to get results.
