Siemens has always been associated with quality products. I worked where the buildings had a lot of HVAC critical to keeping electronics running and Siemens Control systems were used for this. I also worked around a pipeline and many of their controls were Siemens.

Being a long time train lover, World War II trains through my back yard memories, trains hauling passengers is still important to me. Mike knows how to use a camera properly and good voice coverage giving his train videos a lot validity. A job well done and it appears that the Siemens ALC-42 Charger Locomotive is a real winner. The Mike Armstrong Train Videos are the best in my opinion.

I love the level of detail in this series! Great informative program.
I have worked at Siemens Graz during my university diploma thesis, here bogies for all kinds of locomotives, trains and coaches are designed and assembled. In Europe Siemens splits up work between different factories, so the Vectron bodies and final assembly are done in München-Allach (used to be Krauss-Maffei), bogies come from Graz (used to be SGP) and I think the electronics come from another place yet.
The Sacramento factory is fascinating because it does all those steps in house, starting from sheet metal doing all the steps to the assembled locomotive.

In the final assembly area you can see a brightline locomotive in the background. That’s because brightline ordered 5 more trainsets and 11 more SCB-40 locomotives which will be used for their expansion to Orlando. 10 locomotives will be used on the trainsets while the 11th extra locomotive will be used as backup power.

    • @peterfrank29

Can't wait for that here in Orlando. First new Brightline set should be delivered in Sept this year. I also saw a ALC-42 in Phase 7 paint can't wait to see that come out.

My grandfather and nearly all of our family friends worked in the SP Loco shops at the railyard in Sacramento. Almost all lived in Bryte and Broderick very near the shops. As a youngster, I spent a lot of time visiting the SP shops as it was not nearly as restrictive in those days as it is now. I am talking about the early 1950s. I sure miss this bygone era of railroading. Even now I live quite near the Davis Railyards in Roseville. Sure would be nice to tour this Siemens facility in South Sac (Florin.)

It's kind of crazy when you realize that the first engine in Phase VI has only just been delivered to Amtrak and hasn't entered service yet, but we can see Phase VII already being applied to other locomotives on the assembly line! Seems like it will have the shortest "life span" an Amtrak livery has had in 30 years (just meaning that it doesn't seem like it's going to be widely applied like Phase III or Phase V).

I worked for the company as a welder on the Light Rail Team for about 8 months last year. While I heard that the Locomotive weld team was treated pretty well the situation in Light Rail was not pretty. Turn over was extremely high and the work environment was just horrible. It was not uncommon to see welders with 10+ years experience put their tools down and walk out of the building after about two weeks there. Lord knows that I wanted to do it many times as well. During my last month there most of the experienced welders either left for new jobs or were in the process of finding new work. Oh, and they also didn't like paying people. One pal of mine was working for about 23 and hour. Another company offered him a better schedule and 27.50 an hour. Siemens counter offered him with 24.50. He left for the new company two weeks later. I liked building trains. I really did. But I just couldn't stand working for that company.
