I came down from Appalachian State that weekend for the race. I never missed going to Darlington for about 25 years. Growing up equal distance from Charlotte, Rockingham and Darlington I went to a lot of races. Also went to several Wilkesboro races and a drove down to Talladega for a few.
SMIFF TV I really enjoy all of these races too! These are from the time period where I became interested in NASCAR, and arguably when the racing was just awesome! Thanks so much for posting them!
Somewhat lost in this race marking the beginning of Harry Gant's "Mr. September" run was this marking the first race for Kyle Petty since he broke his leg during the Winston 500 in Talladega (incidentally; that was Handsome Harry's first win of 1991)
The 1991 Heinz Southern 500, the 42nd running of the event, was a NASCAR Winston Cup Series race held on September 1, 1991 at Darlington Raceway in Darlington, South Carolina, whose race was contested over 367 laps on the 1.366 mile speedway, served as the 21st race of the 1991 NASCAR Winston Cup Series season. This race was best known for Harry Gant winning his 3rd September Win at the Lady in Black for Andy Petree Racing, as the brightest moment of the 11th Year of NASCAR Racing on Philippine Television was produced by SilverStar Communications, Inc. and aired via tape delay on GMA Radio-Television Arts on September 2, 1991, at 2:30 P.M. right after Goodyear NASCAR Today with Rico Hizon and the late Bobby Guanzon
I take it this is the beginning of Harry Gant's famous 4-race win streak? Fucking awesome. Do you have the other 3? I think you'd be the only person on TH-cam to have all 4 races in one place if you do...
That 5th race is on here too, he led 350 laps in that race, so he dominated it but just didn't close it out, they said he had a brake issue toward the end
@@sevendst19 Least he finished 2nd, any lesser driver would have fallen back through the field and out of the top 10. Shows how good a driver Harry was.
I believe they did it because the highway runs right behind the original grandstands. And they couldn’t expand them. So they flipped the start finish line.
Handsome Harry Gant. When racers didn't quit at 40 years old.

Dominating performance by Harry. Mentally and physically as tough as they come. Great job Harry!!
It is a shame that Harry Gant isn't already in the NASCAR H.O.F.

Mr. September. Loved Gant and that Oldsmobile.
Thank You for this and all the other races you have posted! Love Benny and Ned. They are missed.

It was also his 4th straight win.
Edit: 1st of 4 straight.
Gant was driving for Leo Jackson Motorsports. Andy Petree was his crew chief. Petree bought the team in 1996.
I was in the infield for this one really have some good times there
RIP...Linda Petty
Feels like half the time i pull up one of these old races a Petty is the grand marshal.
2:09:48 Benny covering the softball game with Yakety Sax playing underneath is gold.
Mr. September Harry Gant
Back when Harry was becoming "Mr September"
He starts off via getting the $100,000 bonus from R.J Reynolds by winning 2 of the big 4 races

I'm pretty sure that Gant was the only active grandfather in NASCAR.
Richard Petty was too~ So was James Hylton, and Dave Marcis~
Yeah, them too. Marcis was still driving and Hylton still competed until recently, like a couple of years or so ago.
Earnhardt was too. Jeffrey was 2 by then.
Oh, I’m sure that Morgan Sheppard fit the bill too. Joe Ruttman too.who knows with Rick Mast
Dick trickle was as well and Morgan shepard
93° and 85% humidity....ugh..😮
Did Harry win the busch race the day before I belive he did
Handsome Harry Gant 🤘😎🤘
Kyle Petty returned from his crash where he broke his leg at Talladega in this race.
2:53:43 let's not forgetting the $100,000 bonus from R.J Reynolds the consolation prize in the winston million

You're damn right I do, my friend. Stay tuned! Race #2 of the streak should be online this morning!
He damn near won 5 in a row, in the 5th race he was leading late but Earnhardt passed him and he finished 2nd

Harry gant 1991 Mr September
What was the reasoning for Darlington filp flopping the start finish line and turns in 1996/1997??
I believe they did it because the highway runs right behind the original grandstands. And they couldn’t expand them. So they flipped the start finish line.
They wanted to expand the grandstands but could only do that if they flipped the track
6:50 race start
1:50 lady in black, too tough to tame and names that that drivers could say but the fcc would declare them not tv-pg rating
Hey smiff tv do you have 1991 Tyson Holly Farms 400?
I do not *currently*, but as I tell everybody...."you never know what might come down the road"
SMIFF TV Thanks and I do enjoy the races you put on here man! Keep up the great work!
