This song has an atmosphere of nostalgia. His version is very faithful to the original version. The music is good and the Sunday letter is simple and yet fascinating, is really beautiful.
Exactly - the range of SY is pretty amazing as they tend/seem to control or master every possible angle of noise-rock more or less and THAT'S something out of the ordinary - to me at least :) "Malibu Gas Station" oh boy, so nice chords. And I agree by the way. Well put :)
Thank you my friend. Appreciated! I too had the same experince when I started this project - I could somehow see/hear another layer in their music. So it kind of helped me too. I have only posted some of my sound-performances on homemade instruments but I do make regular music too and yes, using unorthodox tunings - mostly some I've made up myself. Recently I've started some band thing with a friend. I might put the results up here :) Thanks again!
Hi rsgrisvous10, Thanks a lot. Haven't tried with slide but I suppose that I one day do most of these cover again on electric :) You know, just to feel the difference.
Exactly. They kinda have the same build-up and release structure. Obviously something that appeal to the both of us :) Tape echo? Really? How does it work. Never thought of that. Not sure I'll do covers with electric again now you mention it. I think I really enjoy the sound of acoustic because it opens up the songs in a new ways. If I do SY on electric I can always cover it all up with noise-walls. There's much beauty in their songs and to release it an acoustic stand the test imo :)
@artdecade1984 - thanks again. The song is of course an easy and solid SY-hit. And also a very nice record opener. Typical Thurston main riff and then just rock on! :)
After watching you cover Purr and Sugar Kane, I came here to hear my next fav Sonic Youth song and wasn't disappointed! You're awesome and it's a really tough job you're doing, because SU isn't an easy band to cover… !!!
Thank you my friend - appreciate the words! :) I guess that one song just took over the other and suddenly it was like a addiction to solve the riddle :) Thanks!
Congratz your covers are aewsome, they motivated me to learn sonic youth songs, and i have a doubt, if you can help me.. i started to play sonic youth with a acoustic guitar tree days ago, i can play only 3 songs (tom violence, starpower and death valley 69), i have no problems with their tunings, but sunday the C is not ok, i want to know if you use the same strings of the standart tunings in the right place or change it? sorry about my english
Hey Joao and thanks a lot. Much appreciated! I'm only glad if you get somehow inspired by my covers - that's amazing. Especially now that you've taken these songs up. And the ones you've already learned are really cool! Love those songs. About Sunday, what seems to be the problem? The C has to be pretty low. You can tune it down and find the right key playing along to the song at the same time. The standard riffs are in 5th and 8th fret mostly.
Aha, nice info. Thanks a lot. I do know the Line 6 pedal but don't have it. So it's kind of a reverb but more sophisticated/better in other words? Also the chord-structure on Sunday is beautiful. It's funny, because I happen to enjoy the straightforwarded songs - like Sunday, Becuz etc. - just as much as the noisy or semi-noisy ones - Theresa's Sound-World, Brother James etc. - because they've all got plenty of beauty. To me it's a mood thing I guess. You probably know it yourself :)
@wiltordcho - Thanks a lot (I think) - I couldn't figure out what you're saying to be honest and google translate doesn't help me much. Someone here knows how to translate? :) But thanks anyway!
Thanks again - appreciated indeed :) Nailed and nailed hehe, well I did had a point and tried to follow up on the original but it kinda sounds a bit more sloppy on acoustic but also ok in my opinion. It's a favourite here as well :) Reminds me of Becuz in some strange way. Is it just me? Thanks!
Part one - Back when I was doing evol.org the band used to always be really helpful and nice, got me backstage passes whenever they were in Oregon, etc. During the thousand leaves tour I went and spent the entire day because I wanted to see the guitar techs set up the stage, photograph the gear, and interview the guitar techs (all of which I did). When the band rolled in at about 400PM for the sound check I was still on the stage and they started just tuning and banging away - total chaos
i dont know how to say it exactly in english, but the C is not strained enough and he hits the "guitar arm", and thanks for the answer, i think i will buy another strings to try it
Part two - and then gradually the twanging morphed into the intro to this song, they all sort of came together and played the entire song. And then the soundcheck was over. It was sort of amazing - for me anyway. Usually an SY song goes from order to disorder and chaos but that was the opposite.
Wauw, something out of the ordinary I must say. Envy :) But really nice that you could be a part of the 'crew' so to say and do photos and let you walk around doing your thing - that's really cool. Did you use all of this info with photos and everything in any way like on the evol.org page or was it only to get more insight on the SY method? Sounds like you witnessed the becoming of 'Sunday'? Was it? The first time they layed hands on that? If so, it's really amazing :) Can I see the photos? :)
nvanliforp sorry im fact , i don´t have no one , just the proyect in my mind to do a group in the Sonic youth-Nirvana-Alice in chains-Godsmack line!! i just coment my idea to my cousin and he told " Yes" , that the reason i say one of them jejeje , if we recording something i will show you!
Yeh - send me yr email and I'll send them to you. I actually took photos of the dial settings on the pedals. The picture quality from 1998 isn't up to today's standards. my email is ex_magician at yahoo. All that gear in the photos was later stolen. They had already recorded the song by that time. BTW the thousand leaves album had my URL on the cover, so did the SYR releases - that was pretty nice of them.
So excellent with the settings - every SY-nerd must be interested in that and I'm no exception. Do please mail me on: info add brianravnholtjepsen + com That is also my webpage if you feel like checking it out. I'm an artist so that's my works if you get curious some day :) The photoquality from 1998 is fine I think. I do a lot of Polaroids so I like the analogue style. Your photos weren't used in the stolen-gear case? Gonna check out the signature in a minute - very generous of them :) envy!
I watch this once a week
Very nice - thank you! Means a lot! :)
