He is the trending. Whatever kpop idol groups doing now mostly from what he and BigBang introduced from lightstick, min 2 rappers with diff style and many more. They're indeed the rebels to old kpop style. Thats why the k-media always try to bring down them....
Its not just a cockiness, its also facts. He create trends, and everyone curious and follow his steps in fashion and music since he is a brand himself. You can see his influence in kpop. Not to mention media also hunt for his news.

When he says "I don't steal from empty homes" can also be said as I don't rob empty houses, which means that he releases hits no matter who else is releasing music. An "empty house" is basically a time when there is nobody that's really popular releasing music. A full house is when there's a lot of popular or relevant artists releasing music at the same time. GD is saying that he will have a hit even if it's a full house. Tablo from Epik High (veteran hip hop trio, you'd like them) once joked that artists wanted to avoid releasing music at the same time as GD/Bigbang b/c they knew they couldn't beat them.
Bigbang's success started in 2007, a year after debut, when they released "Lies" and it went to #1 for several weeks. This song got them their first music show win and their first Song of the Year among other awards, neither of which they expected. What was different is that Bigbang wasn't the typical boy group. They were considered short and ugly by SK standards, yet they composed and wrote their own songs and generally had a lot of artistic freedom, which was basically unheard of for idols. They then followed up with a bunch of hits after that...basically, since 2007 they haven't had a single flop, and GD is hugely responsible for that b/c he's the main writer/producer of the songs.
GD/BB have always been trend setters, things that are normal in Kpop now were popularized by them starting from having actual rappers, not just people who were taught to rap b/c they needed someone to fill the spot. From the way they create their music and stages, the way they dress, the things they do career-wise...new kpop stans really don't know just how much impact BB had in all of that. At the same time, with all that popularity they gained, BB have a huge number of haters. They criticize every little thing and everything they do becomes gossip. But even the haters will listen to their music and even the haters will follow GD's fashion choices.

When he says "I'm a bear with many talents, (no) fox rather than a bear." It means he's not just a performer that does whatever the company tells him to, like the a bear in a circus. Foxes are associated with being smart and cunning, so he's saying that he doesn't mindlessly follow orders and knows how to navigate in the entertainment industry.
"I don't steal from empty homes" is a reference to a term Korean use called "empty house" it means there are no big artists that release music at the time, hence anyone releasing music during that period won't be facing any huge competition to chart at #1. GD says he doesn't have to target empty houses to chart, he can release music anytime he wants and he'll still chart well.
The scene with him at the dining table and the lyrics, he said that because of his image. He's not afraid to go against the "pure" idol image like he goes clubbing, smoke, and date, which was a taboo thing for idols. This plus his cocky superstar persona on stage makes him a target of haters and prejudice (you can see the blue tinted dining table scene in the MV where he looks rough and everything is bloody and messy). But when the 'filter' is removed (then the scene isn't tinted anymore and he looks very proper), he is actually a very shy and lovable guy and hopes people can see that and love him instead of hating him.

I remember researching how to become an "official" fan before but it was just limited to KVIPs and JVIPs. Even when I was finally able to get to Korea or Japan to their concerts I still don't have an idea of how I can register or even if I can if I am not Korean/Japanese. I always go to the booth but ended up chickening out because no one is speaking English.

GD is the celebrity of celebrities they say if GD is not your bias he is your idol bias.
The outfits displayed on the mannequins near the end of the song are all outfits he wore in MV's for his first album Heartbreaker. He had a sort of "flower boy" concept during that era. I took it as symbolism of GD shedding and destroying his previous image that was most likely constructed by the stylist or somebody managing his public image. With his second album and success of BigBang, he's more established in the industry to pursue his own style and be his own artist.
He's kind of always been the "flower boy" / pretty boy type (& still is in some ways) because he has good looks but is also a bit androgynous esp with fashion - but back then there was a cliche that flower boys in the industry were more looks than talent; which isnt the case with him. But even in heartbreaker era he used his own fashion & had songs that didnt fit the norm (ie: "she's gone" etc) & afterwards, he started using imagery of destroying his "old image" or sneaking it into newer stuff because of the issues that happened during that time with scandals etc. He always talked about putting a lot of himself into the heartbreaker album then & scandals broke out left & right after (accusing him of plagiarism etc). no matter what he does, some are never happy & find a reason to complain - but he does him regardless. Throughout the years he's showed his sincere self & image, though, but back then the issue was "even when its me & im sincere, i still get hate". How he expressed himself to fans & in interviews became a bit more reserved after that, & he started "breaking out of his past self" musically.

Ahahaha THE KING! "Follow me" he says but the thing is most of the time he just does something he never intends for it become anything yet people just follow him. One funny such an occurance was when G-Dragon grew mullet to hide his new neck tattoo from his parents but the trendsetter king accidently started new trend as many male idols started growing mullets following him. Yep, that is just how it works in kpop.

A year after you can see the same in fashion shows. I also thought it was weird too but I learned to trust in Ji's power - he has the Midas touch.

Fashion is one of the extensions of his significant influence in Korea. I won't mention his past achievements; just the ones he has post-discharge from military. Usually when idols go to the military, they are forgotten by the general public. But GD's case is different. Even during his military stint, his standard military issued slippers became hot topic, and someone posted a photo of this and was bought by fans .
His discharge trended in twitter (1M+ tweets with this song as a hashtag) and Naver (Korean search portal). It was celebrated with a Nike collaboration (first for a Korean). This was sold out in different countries even before the video ad was fully aired by Nike or before they were even physically promoted by GD himself. These sneakers' highest resell price of the limited ed version was at 8K USD or 50x its original price. They were also worn even by international athletes (Neymar, Mbappe). Nike invited him to their HQ in Portland because of the hot response to his personally designed sneakers. They are apparently working on another collab.
His return was also marked by fashion house Chanel as he sat front row again this year for Fashion Week. GD is a Chanel brand ambassador and prior to his enlistment, Chanel even sponsored a concert ad for him.
He is also currently the face of Nongfu Tea - a Chinese brand. This is significant because China has a ban against Korean stars promoting in China. He is the first Korean to be the face of a Chinese brand since the ban. His ads cover an entire train station and several buildings and it signals the possibility that the ban may be lifting or he might just be the exception. Either way, it shows how much influence he wields in China because he sells without need of being actually there.
WDongA (a Korean news portal), reported today that after he bought his penthouse unit in Nine One, Hannam District and posted about it in ig, it changed the topography of where the "luxurious" buildings are (traditionally Gangnam). Other reports state that the attention his purchase brought to the area doubled the value of the commercial spaces around it and increased inquiries of celebrities of the area. The penthouse was finished in 2019 and he just moved this month.
He is in a different level than all idols in Korea. No one comes close.
The sweetest thing about all these is that VIPs rarely do any heavy lifting for this recognition. He is recognized and he trends just because he's himself. He isn't even active as a musician YET.
True, he hasn't even made a comeback as a musician yet. I know you mentioned post discharge achievements but wanted to note how, when he entered the military, the unit he was in was so overwhelmed with the number of letters coming in for GD that they ran out of ink and papers. GD's label YGE had to ask fans to stop sending letters to him. It was just so funny how this one made it to international news.

He was accused of plagiarism in his first album. His Heartbreaker sounds like Right Round by Flo.Rida. He was criticized so much because of that. Later on, he and Flo.Rida got it cleared. That's my thought on his second verse.
The situation back then was worse than how we talk about it now. Antis and haters accused him of plagiarism, sent him death threats telling him to kill himself but the most disgusting thing was they sent his mother letters too telling her to kill her child. Disgusting shits. And they put "Ctrl+C Ctrl+V by G-Dragon" painted by red on bigass white posters everywhere! KVIPs used to peel those off the walls in tears. Almost like trending hate hashtag now. And it wasn't even plagiarism, just pure jealousy and hate.

You're right, this from haters' perspective. They try to point out mistakes in whatever he does, they hate him but can't stop talking about him.

G-Dragon is his on stage persona which is full of confidence, cocky and savage but in real life he's Kwon Ji Yong, a very shy, humble and sweet person (you won't believe he's the same GD when you'll see him in variety shows). People love his G-Dragon side more than his real self.
You'll see the scene where G-Dragon is dressed in black. With a rude expression he pokes the fork into piece of uncooked meat (heart) in the plate. Then it shows as if the camera took glasses off and you see the real him, a well dressed and behaved Jiyong trying into cut the cooked piece of meat and ends up picking the fruit with the fork.
He means to say that I am not a bad person please take good care of me, I'm not actually the G-Dragon you see on stage, I am a human who gets hurt too so please love me as I am.

Keep doing what you're doing! I've been a casual Big Bang fan since 2008 but never bothered looking into the lyrics. So great to follow along your discovery journey and learn the epic-ness of their lyrics in addition to the amazing music and hype performances. Seems like you've made a bit of headway into 2NE1 also - would highly recommend more live performances from them as well! The current Kpop groups have fun songs and are incredibly talented at dancing... but BB and 2NE1 are true artists

But I am 64 and a huge fan of of GD and BB. I came across Kpop after a car crash, fortunately BB was the first band I came across. I now listen to them exclusively. All other music has paled into insignificance- at the moment GD’s Mitchigo is my favourite track.

I'm not a hard core rap fan, but I know this song because I'm an AKMU fan. They did a cover of this song on Kpopstar season 2. Very different, but it helped them move on in the competition, which they won, and signed with YG. It also led to G Dragon doing a performance of "Missing You" with Lee Suhyun of Akdong Musician (AKMU) during his concert tour. A different side of G Dragon that might not be to your liking.

They have two official BB social account that doesn't have weekly updates, and they aren't active on social media either, so we became as lazy as BB. 😂

Absolutely right,he hates sk rules in terms of entertainment,a lot of his song are not allowed to play live in korea,his last album released in a usb pack, almost didn't get the title as an album to be counted in a chart.gdragon is different, bigbang is different, yg artists are different from the rest, that is why they've been named as the blackship of korean entertainment.but they are the most popular from the rest,bts used to say "bigbang is their role model" that is why you can see as they perform there is a similarity on how they approach their fans,but of course bigbang has a lot of swag over them a "masterpiece" not copied but developed through years.
