19:33 Don't look at the concubines from a 21th century view point. Back ten it was a prestigious position, the top ones were technically the queens of the empire with tremendous political power and influence. Many of them willingly choose it as a career path and they came from high ranking noble families, it was a honor for their family and not something they were sad about. By the way it's similar for the courtesans. Back then it wasn't a looked down job, it was a legitimate way to make a living or break out of poverty, maybe even get a rich noble husband.
Yeah the historical context is critical. It’s impossible to disregard the influence of the modern perspective, but a major (THE major?) undercurrent of the show is how women use the tools available to them in order to navigate, survive, and thrive in a culture where they’re second class citizens.
What the head woman did was she broke the pot and blamed it on maomao so maomao has to pay for it. But she took the money out of the portion that goes to her "family" (aka kidnappers that sold her to the palace) and instead gave her money for "food and rations". This type of money is given directly to the worker instead of sending to the "family". So she effectively took the money the kidnappers were taking and gave it back to maomao to help her. She's a nice lady.
Hope you enjoy the reaction! I’m really loving Maomao so far, she’s a great protagonist. Also loving Gyokuyou 😍 OH also I’m going to try and get two episodes out a week!! If I feel too rushed I’ll go to one but for now there will be two reactions a week, like I did with Frieren!
@@zimbo65a you know people like you are why I’m hesitating to continue making reactions to this anime. I thought they may have been poisoned by the fumes in the fire or something. Like let me live damn.
So, to be clear, a (male) military officer has send to Jinshi, a very beautiful eunuch, bun laced with aphrodisiac. Is it safe to say the military officer might be after Jinshi little butt? And right after that, Jinshi ask to make some aphrodisiac... I wonder if there is a link... or if we could hear, in passing, about it in, like, a few episode...
Oops, catching up and watching this now because TH-cam notification failed me. Btw, one of my favorite details depicts just how observant Gyokuyou is. In most situations, you can see her paying attention to things happening around her. In this case, when Jinshi's flirting fails on Maomao and, frustrated, he tests his smile on the Ladies-in-Waiting (giggles) and then back on Maomao (shudders), you can see Gyokuyou also watching everyone's reaction, including Jinshi's irritation. Excited to watch your ep 3 reaction next; it' still my fav episode!
its not so much a purity thing, they can't have some other guy have a baby to become the heir of the empire. its to make sure there isnt a question of whos child is being born, and whos bloodline.
Heyy, loving your reactions so far. Just a quick note, it's not that the other lady (Lihua) didn't listen to Maomao's warning about the face powder. She just didn't receive the warning. It was one of her ladies in waiting who threw the message away without bothering to read it.
Maomao's VA is Aoi Yuki who's worked in many animes two that I think will be used here are Tanya from the Saga of Tanya the Evil and Clementine from Overlord we hear those characters come out in some of Maomao's encounters later. The kidnappers posed as Maomao's family so they could "legally" sell her contract to the rear palace. Also Mao in Chinese means cat (appropriate for her curiosity) and Xiao means little. Even today campers get sick from using oleander sticks as skewers for roasting hot dogs over a campfire or people throwing poison ivy on a fire to get rid of it inhaling the smoke and getting respiratory reactions.
There are at least levels in Rear Palace Level 1 is the Consort (High Medium and Low), Level 2 are Ladies in Waiting usually noble or high status women from Consorts family, and the maids e.g., laundry.
