I have a two Delica 3s which were heavily used EDC knives and I always had problems with those pocket clip screws coming loose. In the end, because I ALWAYS carry tip-up, I super glued them, but the design always seemed flawed to me. I'm really glad the new Delicas use the three screw design now. Anyhow, another great video.
I can't believe it! I just bought a Spiderco Delica 4 on the LL Bean website last night, ($79.00) and then I found this review on youtube. Cool. Looks like I picked the right knife. Thanks for the video.
I have this knife, I literally have it in my jacket every single day. It works great and it's left handed friendly if you move the carry clip over to the other side. A big feature for a lefty.
The reason they changed the tip from Delica 3 to Delica 4, is that people had problems with the pointy blade shape. It had less angle to it, making it vulnerable under stress. So Spyderco changed the tip's geometry by adding a slight downcurve, increasing the tip's angle. Resulting in more strength in the tip. You might not have that problem, if you know how to properly use and take care of your knives. They did it for marketing, just like you said with the nested steel liners.
I don't know why you are getting thumbs down, but I have the endura and love it, Main reason ppl go Delica is bc it is smaller and Legal. Due to many states strict knife laws endura is too big and illegal. Also this knife is purely a small EDC knife for small tasks. Endura handles heavier tasks as well as small.
I prefer the Delica 4 over the Delica 3. The steel liners, thickness and the somewhat shallower point makes it usable for tougher jobs and it has made the use of harder steels possible (zdp-189) Also the clip can be used up or down left or right on the Delica 4.
Good food for thought. Due to my nature of daily assignments, I prefer 4 as I can carry it tip down, for fast application. The weight also reminds me that it's there. And I feel that is's stronger. Anyhow, I also own a few 3's and use them occasionally off duty. Tks for good review.
I don't understand how you can question the steel liners. The one complaint I had about the Delica 3 and any Spyderco knives without steel liners is that they felt weak. The liners in the Delica 4 make it feel "stronger" to me. An EDC knife to me should make you feel confident to use it when ever needed. It it feels weak to me, I wouldn't trust it. At .6 ounces it is worth it and a big improvement over the Delica 3.
halomaniac, now I could be wrong but I think the pupose of steel liners is to increase ridgidity and stop flexing in the handle, in the event that side to side torque is applied to the knife, not to strenghten the lock. On a random side note, nice taste in games.
More important than unawareness of the weight while wearing to me is the feeling when handling the blade. A knife that is essentially only a blade has a much better feel for delicate handling. Talking about feel :In extremo, I might keep a blade that is gimmicky- as long it is fun messing around with. Thanks
The problem with the Delica 3 is that the single point clip attachment would act as a pivot, the clip would rotate in time and tear the clip plastic recess in the handle. Happened to two of mine(yeah, I love the Delica too). The fourth gen Delica 3 bolts clip support, permitted by the liner, is far, far superior.
FWIW, my 1st Gen Delica's pivot is kinda tight. To be fair, I got it used, and it was kinda gritty at first, but oiling the pivot and repeated opening and closing has smoothed that out, but it's still rather tight. I can't flick it open the way I can do with my Mini Grip.
The delica 1 had a molded in plastic pocket clip, not sure about the 2 but I think thats when they swtched to all stainless. I would love to have another Endura 1. I prefered the plastic clip because it was faster out of the pocket.
Another great video NUTNfancy! thanks again, just one more purchase i made mainly due to your excellent reviews.... Its nice to have a place to go to where you get reviews on things your thinking of purchasing...
The Delica 2/3 clip is the only bad part o the knife. It pops off periodically no matter how many times I've tightened it. The triple bolted clip on the 4 (same design as the Endura it looks like) looks like a big improvement.
Just got a Delica 1 (my first spyderco) in what appears to be unused condition and it looks like Spyderco went back to the Delica 1 handle shape with the Delica 4. The handle on that Delica 3 looks like it's a bit shorter than the Delica 4. There is no Boye detent on my Delica which allows the line along the back to flow more smoothly, to my eye anyway. Some of spyderco's knives strike me as a bit iPod-ish, now that I think about it--constantly changing the design one way or another.
i would definitely sharpen the blade. vg10 is very good quality steel and is used in a lot of different environments. kitchen utility, carry blades, custom designs, laminated blades, etc.. give it a go!
I like the Delica for EDC. However, I will say that I did have difficulty with the lock releasing with aggressive use in a gen 1 Endura model ('94? 96?). This happened several times and I wrote to Spyderco about the issue (They said there was no issue, I tossed the knife in the trash). I am very happy that Spyderco eventually listened to customer feedback and made the cutout in the lock lever. Makes a big difference; the detent is not marketing hype, but a real improvement.
@kingmanted If you still want a delica but arent sure if its friendly enough, get one of the coloured ones. As of right now, you can get full flat ground (will slice better) delicas in a variety of friendly looking colours. As for would I carry a delica, yes. But if i thought more than a few people would see me using it i would carry a dragonfly. Although, its pretty unfriendly around here for knives.
They will do the job, however I tend to go aginst the grain I use no "skinning implements" I use a small 4'' fillet knife and a steady hand, with a fillet knife and a steady hand you will never go back to conventional skinning implements! trust me on this!
I must say that since I've gotten a Delica I have hardly used my Flash 1. Pairing it with a Manix 2 (translucent blue) and Leatherman Sidekick is unbeatable in my opinion
so mainly what I got out of this videos is that the spyderco salt one is the ideal knives for nutnfancy except its not VG-10....it has no steel liners, same dimensions as delicas and has jimpping. It'll be even better if it had ffg in h-1 as well....I'd like it
the square clip indent in the deli 3 was a design weakness. owned one and didnt notice the clip got some play in it, the leverage on the loose clip in my pocket split the FRN on the edge of where the clip indents. ...very small issue and wouldnt happen with the new clips. delica is a great edc. i have a custom 4 vg10 ffg w/ superblue handle . loveit.
I feel customers asked for the steel liners because they probably thought it would make it stronger. Or they might not be confident in their knife not having them.
Just wondering, do you have any opinion on the Delica 4's modified tip? It's supposed to increase the tip strength, but I kind of think it would take away from penetration power. I like a good tip, and would value any insight.
It is really funny that Nutn says this is a specific review. In modern terms, this is a really short review.. His videos now are half an hour to 45 minutes long.
I'd wonder by now if there has been a replacement to your reference EDC Delica. I do have a 4 and I do consider it the reference EDC blade. I have other EDC folders, (Mostly Spydercos) but none give me the confidence in functionality of a hard use medium work knife like the Delica 4. I do prefer the liner. My only mistake was getting the partial serration which is of limited utility for me. Regardless, I still carried the thing for more than a year before playing the field again. Spyderco knows this is the reference EDC too, because they've spent a lot of time developing most of their line in the $100 + range knowing they've all but perfected their meat and potatoes Delica/Endura series.
Yep it's still a reference blade for me. But I do have many other favorite EDC knives that are just as good, some better. For instance the Benchmade 2550 auto is wonderful. The SOG Axis Mini. The small Cold Steel Voyagers (older version preferred by me). Indeed though the Delica/Enduras are reference. Maybe that'd be a good video for ya'll. Fun fact: I was criticized in '08 for telling Spyderco to make FFG versions of these knives, in different colors. Well they did it and they have become some of their best selling blades. Buyah. -nutn
Just picked one up and ive been carrying a full size grip for almost a yr its a d2 tool steel and the delica4 is vg10 but anyways ive put up the grip cause i like it so much so itl b in the safe for now till i get tired of the delica if i do lol
just got this knife and I have to say I hated it at first but after an hour I just loved it, at first I was like this is stupid I feel like its goin to float away if I dont hang on to it or it gunna break or something but after usin it for ONLY and hour I realize how very very wrong I was
I have the whole generation line of delicas including the first with one piece extruded clip in all stainless. Steel liners add unnoticeable but necessary heft for rigid strength and removable screws. I trail run and camp at night and continue on for another day or two, so light weight is a fetish with me and I will sacrifice a little more "feather weight" for gear that I might have to rely on like my fixed blade (mora) and folder back up (delica) and fenix e11 because they are after all, my "STEEL" tools.
Hey nutn just thought id point out how your likeablity scale has become easier keep in mind you gave the delica 4 the same score as the vg-10 camilius i liked the more strict likeablity scale gives a broader view on the blade with the easier scale numbers like 1-6 are never used so its just 4 choices essentialy. keep it up champ :)
Im curious to know what you guys here viewing this video think about this,If you were 15 (like me) and you wanted a good knife to carry around, would you carry a delica?I really want one but I'm not sure its friendly looking enough that I wouldn't look like a "troublemaker" lol. Thanks in advance!
@knoweroftanks If you want pretty, then buy a custom made knife, if you want a knife that is going to put Fuction befor Form and get the job done, then you buy a spyderco.
@punksnotdead543 with the amount of subscribers and question nutnfancy gets, this would have to be his full time job in order to be able to get back to everyone.
Oh and yeah the delica 4 is a superior upgrade with better scales and grip, JIMPING, removable screws, and lightweight skeletonized liners and oh yeah and a few more back breaking, foot swelling, agonizingly heavy , sweat inducing ....ounces. Oh and yeah it comes with your choice of the much over hyped FFG blade.

Still loving my delica 4 with Emerson wave. Finally glad you gave them love some years later in another review. Damn I can't believe this is from 08'...I'm getting old... ;,(
@dustinshawnjarvis The extra 20 lbs of fat is the part that makes no sense. Keep in mind that when he talks about weight, he's talking about weight as part of a system. Those ounces add up and can make the difference between making it up the mountain or not. Check out some of his adventure videos. If you've ever talked to guys that climb the big mountains, they will tell you all kinds of tricks to cut down weight...like taking the cardboard ring out of their toiletpaper. It adds up. -- Veri
@dustinshawnjarvis The fact that you assume everyone has 20 pounds of extra fat on them doesn't make sense. I for one don't, and I'm sure a significant number of viewers don't. If you do, then why are you criticizing others for it? If you don't, then your comment doesn't even apply to you and thus makes no sense.
nutn, i am a 16 year old australian and think what your doing with the tfp is great. when i first started watching your vid s i thought you were crazy because in australia no one has a gun and carrying a knife is crazy. on further thinking about your ideas like the sheepdog concept i really think your right. i am very wary of being brainwashed but realised that i was being brainwashed by the government. one thing though i that what do you say about iresponsible people having guns? daeasel1996

I just bought the 189 steel Delica 4. Should be in tomorrow.
can't go wrong with plain edge in an every use knife. I like this bad boy.
I have this knife, I literally have it in my jacket every single day. It works great and it's left handed friendly if you move the carry clip over to the other side. A big feature for a lefty.
You should get one of the new limited 2010 delicas with the full flat ground (and colored grips of you like), just heavenly.
now i want a Delica 3
The reason they changed the tip from Delica 3 to Delica 4, is that people had problems with the pointy blade shape. It had less angle to it, making it vulnerable under stress. DO A REVIEW ON JUST THE CENTOFANTE!

carried and used delicas since 93.started with gin2?aus-6 aus-8 ats-55 vg-10.great design great knife.
Another great video NUTNfancy! thanks again, just one more purchase i made mainly due to your excellent reviews.... Its nice to have a place to go to where you get reviews on things your thinking of purchasing...
i have both an love em. I like the size and weight of the delica is but the axis lock is awesome.
if you have the waved version not only does it have the hook but it also works as a great bottle opener
just bought the delica 4 and so far i am very happy with it!
It looks ready.
he should check out the full flat grind delica since it would slice better than the saber grind
The Delica 2/3 clip is the only bad part o the knife. It pops off periodically no matter how many times I've tightened it. The triple bolted clip on the 4 (same design as the Endura it looks like) looks like a big improvement.

if u could can u make a video with all of ur knives and all of ur guns that would be awsome thanx
YourCornerStore has a new delica with the same grind and point but i think it still has steel liners, still better though!!

79!!
jesus, i just bought mine off walmarts site for 52 bucks..
my knife collection is now a centofante 3 and soon the delica 4!
the square clip indent in the deli 3 was a design weakness. owned one and didnt notice the clip got some play in it, the leverage on the loose clip in my pocket split the FRN on the edge of where the clip indents. ...very small issue and wouldnt happen with the new clips. delica is a great edc. i have a custom 4 vg10 ffg w/ superblue handle . loveit.
Why do the websights that you can order knives from always list the early models of the Endura and Delica as the 4th gen version.
I just picked up a Delica 4. AWESOME!!!!
Why do the websights that you can order knives from always list the early models of the Endura and Delica as the 4th gen version?
i have a spyderco knife and need to find out what its worth the serial # is 757 and it has t 3 initials on the blade which is aus 8
12:48 "just a little bit lighter" haha!!, your tha man. I am just as obsessed with weight as you are
Thanks. Keep the good work.
I don't like the pocket clip on the D3. I have it on a Endure and it moves too easily, hard to tighten down.
There is a larger one called the "Endura". Same design..
@punksnotdead543 That's because I'm busy making the next video for you guys chief!
I feel customers asked for the steel liners because they probably thought it would make it stronger. Or they might not be confident in their knife not having them.
is it true that spyderco is discontinuing the delica?
i wanna get one with the emmerson wave hook on it before they stop making them
How did that grip tape hold up?
I'd be afraid of it coming off or that it would wear holes in my pocket.
Just wondering, do you have any opinion on the Delica 4's modified tip? It's supposed to increase the tip strength, but I kind of think it would take away from penetration power. I like a good tip, and would value any insight.
getting a delica 4. any opinions on serrated/combo/plain edge? arguments either way?
I may be missing a some small detail but this seems exaclty the same as the endura, whats the diffrence?
Use alcohol to clean the steel before applying the grip tape.
The thing that bothers me on that knife is that tiny blade
It is really funny that Nutn says this is a specific review. In modern terms, this is a really short review.. His videos now are half an hour to 45 minutes long.
oh yah i forgot about the g10 versions
not true, look at the tenacious. it has ffg (full flat grind) and it doesn't affect the spyderhole
whats edc stand for?
3 days, man. Almost broke a nervous sweat ;)
Great review as usual, and awesome knife!
I'd wonder by now if there has been a replacement to your reference EDC Delica. I do have a 4 and I do consider it the reference EDC blade. nutnfancy No shortage of folks who'll snap up anything Spyderco makes...
take apart the delica 4 and take out the steel liners
yaaa why did they blunt the tip sorta kinda lol
did tactical doodle like pokemon?
Just picked one up and ive been carrying a full size grip for almost a yr its a d2 tool steel and the delica4 is vg10 but anyways ive put up the grip cause i like it so much so itl b in the safe for now till i get tired of the delica if i do lol
do you own an endura?
every day carry
Thanks to nutn for being an avid knife historian. I have never bought a knife without asking what would nutn think?
just got this knife and I have to say I hated it at first but after an hour I just loved it, at first I was like this is stupid I feel like its goin to float away if I dont hang on to it or it gunna break or something but after usin it for ONLY and hour I realize how very very wrong I was
E.D.C. = Every Day Carry.
holoe grind yes!
I have the whole generation line of delicas including the first with one piece extruded clip in all stainless. you can order it from walmart's site for 52 bucks, same knife.
: keep up the good work
Hey nutn just thought id point out how your likeablity scale has become easier keep in mind you gave the delica 4 the same score as the vg-10 camilius i liked the more strict likeablity scale gives a broader view on the blade with the easier scale numbers like 1-6 are never used so its just 4 choices essentialy. keep it up champ :)
Nice review! Thanks.
I should receive my Delica 4 in a few days
@dustinshawnjarvis ounces equal pounds, pounds equal pain.
lol why didn't you get the orange handles nutn?
Im curious to know what you guys here viewing this video think about this,If you were 15 (like me) and you wanted a good knife to carry around, would you carry a delica?I really want one but I'm not sure its friendly looking enough that I wouldn't look like a "troublemaker" lol. Thanks in advance!
@knoweroftanks If you want pretty, then buy a custom made knife, if you want a knife that is going to put Fuction befor Form and get the job done, then you buy a spyderco.
Of course the steel lining will add strength... With EDC you risk sitting on it, overtime the only polymer handle will ware down
cutlerylover is a knife-geek...nutnfancy is a knife-nerd
@punksnotdead543 with the amount of subscribers and question nutnfancy gets, this would have to be his full time job in order to be able to get back to everyone.
Oh and yeah the delica 4 is a superior upgrade with better scales and grip, JIMPING, removable screws, and lightweight skeletonized liners and oh yeah and a few more back breaking, foot swelling, agonizingly heavy , sweat inducing ....ounces. Oh and yeah it comes with your choice of the much over hyped FFG blade.
Hey, Nutn, would you go for the Endura FFG or Delica4 FFG?
I am also a diver, what kind of work do you do?
I am interested in work with diving.
@PaulFredericks66
Lots of people are also put off by the blade shapes. I've seen that come up on the forums. I was one of them for the longest time, but when the opportunity presented itself to get a Delica for $9, I jumped on it, even though I still thought it was a funny-looking knife. Still do, but I've found it's easier for me to open with my weak hand than my BM 556's thumb studs. That's reserved for my other hand. So the ugly little Delica's grown on me. LOL
Still loving my delica 4 with Emerson wave. Finally glad you gave them love some years later in another review. Damn I can't believe this is from 08'...I'm getting old... ;,(
just ordered this one, my edc has been the mini griptilian, amazing. definitely forgot it was on me a few times, perfect
Nice review, Delica4 and Dragonfly are on my list.
My favorite Spyderco is my Tenacious :D

i am a 16 year old australian and think what your doing with the tfp is great. when i first started watching your vid s i thought you were crazy because in australia no one has a gun and carrying a knife is crazy. on further thinking about your ideas like the sheepdog concept i really think your right. i am very wary of being brainwashed but realised that i was being brainwashed by the government. one thing though i that what do you say about iresponsible people having guns?
daeasel1996
@knifeman2000 LOL its not gonna work that way.just use your common sense.
I have a Delica 4 since 2012. Love it. Highly recommend it for EDC.
Hehe Nutn you sound like such a geek in this video:)
Is this the Glock -19 of folding knives?
