    One of my favorite things about Bokuto is that he is flawed. Some people are annoyed by Bokuto's emo mode, but I find it humanizing. He is such a positive person most of the time. I don't know if it is spoiler but Akaashi is the vice-captain that is all I'll say lol. I wish this was a double episode, but I always want to binge this with you. Always my favorite day when you post!

    5:54 player's name that made the received is Yamato Sarukui (last name, first name). Saru means "monkey" in Japanese, but I, personally, think that Bokuto was just shortened it the full name Sarukui to Saru.

      Yep, it's the same as people calling Tanaka "Ryu", short for Ryuunosuke. They're not calling him Dragon (Ryu=Dragon in Japanese).
      Same for Taketora Yamamoto from Nekoma, people shorten it to Tora (which means Tiger in Japanese), still they're not litterally calling him a tiger

    Yachi been invested in the new quick more than anyone else on the team. The "fist bump" from Hinata and Kageyama to Yachi is one of my fave moments

    • @spartan1347981
      @spartan1347981 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      Right? We know Hinata is fairly emotionally intelligent, and he knew of Yachi's apprehensions, especially after Yachi expressed She wanted to see the new quick. But Kageyama joining in shows he wanted to reassure her everything was ok between him and Hinata and her spending hours helping him practice the new quick wasn't in vain. It's such a lovely moment.

  • @spartan1347981
    @spartan1347981 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +24

    I love how it's not just Hinata but Kageyama also recognises Yachi's apprehension over Tobio and Hinata's "falling out" and did the fist bump to her with Hinata to show everything is ok now. Like, he's pragmatic as he wasn't gonna do the new quick, but once he did he reaffirmed to Yachi that everything was good, because even he has that emotional intelligence for someone who worked with and helped him so closely when practicing the new quick.
    Like genuinely, karasuno is in safe hands with the two key players being so close to the next to be manager.
    I like it especially since it shows how emotionally intelligent Kageyama can be, especially with someone in his own year that doesn't A. Antagonize him or B. Annoy and challenge him at every turn.

    18:27 yeah it stops, but remember than in real time when they're not doing a slow-mo, its only for a split second (since Hinata just hits it immediately as soons as it stops) that's a big difference for Hinata since he can see the block in that split second, but to outsiders it almost looks the same.
    In later episodes when they eventually get this new quick mastered and is basically "old news", they stop doing the slow mo spin thing , it just looks the same as the old quick.
    I'm saying this as a heads-up because some people think that because the cool spin animation just stops appearing, they think that aren't doing the new quick but that's not true, they replace it completely and basically never use the old quick again since it's obsolete. It will look like the old quick visually, like, very fast, but you can assume they're using the new one.

    I used to hate training arcs in other shows, they tend to be boring and not compelling. I feel like what makes it work here in Haikyuu is the payoff. This episode (and the next) really make it worth it to watch everyone struggle and stumble for a while.

    • @jakeDgirl
      @jakeDgirl 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      I think it's also a matter of perception. A lot of training arcs happen in the most common of shounen, fantastical stories. At first, it's fun to see how they train, but in the end, it's hard to relate to what they're training for. I subconsciously feel "I don't understand how this quirky training will translate to actual fights/battles. After a few scenes or episodes, the character has leveled up and I don't exactly know how. They're dragging the training arc to give an impression of difficulty, when I KNOW they're gonna pull it off anyway for plot reasons".
      I think Haikyuu being such a realistic show, with realistic skills, and realistic evolution make me feel like "I can do that, I can practice that hard. The skill they're trying to achieve is achievable for ME as a normal human being." And so the uncomfortable feeling of failure, and then the pay off, translate to our own reality. That future MOMENT is worth it because of that hardship in training. The skills aren't perceived as "inevitable" for plot reasons, but are perceived as "hard-earned".

    So the "Nice Monkey" is a mistranslation - the guy's name is Sarukui, Saru for short - this can be directly translated as monkey but here it is literally just used as a name.
    Bokuto is actually the captain. Aakashi is the Vice-Captain.
    Finally I can make the nameing window about Akaashi:
    Keiji Akaashi - While Keiji is a common name, the way it is written in this name is unique and usual. It consists of symbols for "to govern/rule and captial/city" - In this case it refers to how Akaashi basically controls Bokuto as we have seen this episode. Akaashi means: rufous-legged owl and that is also the kind of owl he looks like.

  • @iris6818

    Bokuto is one of my favourite non-karasuno players in Haikyuu. He is just so energetic and simple but his passion for volleyball is so much greater than it seems. His Furudate elaborated it in later chapters of manga which are yet to be animated.
    Also, a fun fact he actually has two older sisters so you can say he is kinda grew up like a pampered kid and thats why he likes getting all the attention which hypes him up to do his best but he does get emotional during the games now and then. However, Akaashi always does a great job of getting him back on track. Also, Akaashi mentioned it in previous episodes that there's no end to Bokuto's spiking practice which clearly shows how hard he actually works and everyone in Fukurodani except of Akaashi can't keep up with him. Akaashi is the only person who helps him with his endless spiking practice and that makes them a very good duo.
    Honestly, Bokuto and Akaashi's dynamic is so so good. They are also Captain and Vice Captain of the team but Bokuto doesn't wear No. 1 jersey but prefers to wear No. 4 because No.4 is originally given to the Ace of the team and he likes that title better.
    Overall, he is just a cheerful guy who loves volleyball but needs a lot of support at the same time which Akaashi naturally gives him.

    I love Takeda's description of Bokuto during this match. There are some players who just make a sport seem really joyful--they're having a great time, and you get pulled into that too. The idea that volleyball is *fun* is really important to this series, and Bokuto when he's in form is such a good embodiment of that. (Emo-mode Bokuto is ... not, but I'm not going to complain too much about a teenage boy being moody.)

    the concept of kageyama new set is easier to imagine in pool/biliard. depending on how you hit the white ball with a cue you can make it stop, you can even make the white ball spin back after impact or even continue to go/follow the ball it hits after impact. its all about spin you put to ball and force. force you put into toss decides the distance and then spin on the ball decides how ball behaves. It makes more sense in pool than in volleyball but concept is basically same. Idea is that you put so much backward spin to your toss that even though ball is going in one direction the spin is pulling ball to opposite direction forcing the ball to come to a halt. theoretically if you are capable of putting enough spin you can make ball go one direction and switch to other but i dont think that is physically possible on such a short terrain/court. As for what kageyama does he calculates distance of where hinata gonna be which determines the force of toss and then he figures out how much spin he needs to put on the ball to make the "toss vs spin" come to a halt right in front of hinata. It is basically impossible task but he is pullling it off thanks to his genius skills.
    I also heard people comparing the moment of "ball stop" as hinata describes it to yo-yo or bungee jumping where ball stop is the point between up and down

    • @mrpajamas4031
      @mrpajamas4031 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Ya, good theoretical explanation. But this would never be used in a real life vb game with all that spin because you would just get called for a double. also putting that much spin on a volleyball in a setting motion irl is near physically impossible

    • @frankcayseron8637
      @frankcayseron8637 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@mrpajamas4031 especially on such a small court its definitely impossible, maybe in beach volleyball but even then as you said "near physically impossible" especially with kageyama's accuracy . still as far as explanation for sake of grasping the concept and idea behind it i dont think i can do better than that :D

  • @daichi7887
    @daichi7887 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

    18:40 Not impossible to do in real life but you've gotta be some kind of athletic genius to do it even inconsistently-- this applies to both the setter who would make the toss and the spiker to notice the difference~
    This is why coach Takeda said that he doesn't see the difference at first glance, because it's all going so fast it appears to be the same.
    That "stop" in the air is a very miniscule amount of time so yeah, you'd definitely not find clips of it BUT it is something I'd say you'd experience when you're in the zone about to spike the ball in a way that feels like the ball is just waiting just a bit longer in front of you giving you enough milliseconds to think of the attack.

  • @darqlyte1104
    @darqlyte1104 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    That kind of drop set is doable. I remember being told to use that kind of set for certain spiker who cannot adjust their timing between spike & running toss. Drop set easier for them to spike & give options where to hit.

    Also one thing I love about haikyuu is that it portraits all kinds of volleyball players. I have a "Bokuto" in my team. She's really good and one of our top scorers but if she misses a couple spikes/serves in a row she gets in her head and can't play as well anymore. People may say Bokuto is annoying or he "wouldn't work" as a player but actually he's pretty realistic. Haikyuu doesn't only show us 1 or 2 kinds of characters/players but they explore all sorts of different dynamics and situations one could encounter while playing the game.

    Okay, so the deal with the set- which is physically possible, though really really hard- is that you need to set it with enough backspin to kill the ball's forward momentum at the right spot. Right as it stops and gravity takes hold, there's a brief moment that the ball is almost hovering in the air, which is what allows Hinata to see the court and decide where to hit. But this is really hard to pull off, because you're aiming for the peak of that ball- the place where the backspin kills the momentum- to match up perfectly with the spiker's arm.

    This new quick is supposed to be just as fast as the previous one, that's why they're having a hard time differentiating it from the old one.
    I can't find any similar videos in real life, but there is another Haikyuu reactor (Coach Donnie from Elevate yourself channel) that mentioned a USA olympic setter named Lloyd Ball about how his toss appears to sit in mid-air allowing his spikers to make decisions to hit around the block. (It's in his Haikyuu reaction video season 2 episode 6 around 18:52 if you are interested). I tried searching for Lloyd Ball's videos, but i can't really see something similar to what Kageyama did. Either the animation is just stylized, or my eyes are not good enough to distinguish between regular toss and the toss that stop, like Takeda sensei, lol! At the very least, the toss that stop has a basis in real life.
    Bokuto is temperamental, but for his teammates to be ok with his attitude probably means he has more positive qualities than the negative ones. YES! He is like Hinata, lol! They have the same energy. Except Hinata doesn't have any mood swings. Props to Akaashi for managing his hitters well. I think he's a lot like Oikawa on how well he knows his teammates, and he's only a second year.

    On the subject of Patreon:
    I 100% respect and admire your choice to want everyone experience your full reaction! It’s great! I just fear that eventually, as you grow, copyright will make that near impossible unless you severely continue to change/mute the footage (which you have already started!) a patreon also has the advantage of being a second venue for ppl to watch the reactions when a few of them get taken down temporarily. What a lot of reactors do who don’t want to exclude people is kinda what you have already been doing with the TH-cam memberships, just releasing the video a few days ahead. Here patreon also has the advantage of being able to use proper audio for the footage.
    I understand that you wouldn’t want to have the extra hassle of maintaining another platform! So please don’t see this as nagging. In the end this is, of course, your choice (duh).
    But I for one would not mind paying just for decent audio quality in the reaction footage, as opposed to the TH-cam memberships! And I don’t think you would exclude anyone from your full reactions.

    Bokuto is the Captain, but Akaashi is the center pillar. Bokuto is the darling of the team and they can afford to let him be a bit ...eccentric because everyone is on a high level. They're a good team. They are, after all, still teen school kids 😂 drama is life

    That new set of Kageyama's is exaggerated for what would be plausible in real life tbh. You can spin a ball in a way to change it's forward momentum, but to make it stop mid air from such a quick set isn't really plausible in real life. It's the spin that causes the air around the ball to shift and basically is like creating friction with the air so it slows down the ball and changes trajectories. At least that's how I understand it.

    The new quick toss is like a very extreme parabola set, except to achieve it you have to put extreme spin on the ball.
    In terms of pulling it off its not easy to do but not outside the realms lf possiblity (the accuracy required to keep it accurate enough for a minus tempo speed set is probably next to impossible tho).
    However the way you'd have to put spin on the ball would probably mean in any proper match it'd get called as a double touch and it wouldn't be a legal toss (though im sure with your experience you've probably figured that out, or had an inclination that would be the case). Its an instance of setting aside real life to live in plausible deniability/rule of cool that makes you accpet this fictional thing as being presented as practical in matches in the show.
    Kuroko no basket is much worse offender of this having to suspend disbelief for the effect of the story and rule of cool vs how practical or even possible it would be to do the things they do irl. (Though this doesn't mean you shouldn't check out Kuroko no basket/kurokos basketball since its a very fun show)

    Backspin Basketball Flies Off Dam www. youtube. com/watch?v=2OSrvzNW9FE
    Near minute 0:52 you can see how they throw a baseball using a backspin and it stops it's momentum in mid air
    Now, i think it's still really difficult to do consistently with a volleyball, but it is theoretically possible

    The way Kageyama's set/toss works here is that it has so much back spin that it stops at the point where kageyama places it, however I think this a just "shounen" thing and Correct me if I'm wrong but I know that in volleyball having that much spin when setting is a violation or something.

    • @SpringStarFangirl
      @SpringStarFangirl 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It is actually possible! The issue isn't the spin, but rather if Kageyama didn't touch the ball at the same time with both hands. If he can put the backspin on it with both hands coming into contact with the ball at the same time, that's not illegal at all.

      @@snorlysqueak4391 no, the same rule applies- they're just much stricter in applying it. It's why you see a lot of underhand setting in beach volleyball- you need to be extremely confident in your overhand setting to be willing to use it in beach volleyball.

    The quick is a bit overexaggerated for hype... its not really possible as shown... with how fast he fires it out there's no way to kill all the horizontal momentum. The spin can convert a decent amount of it to lift and let gravity counter that, but it's too fast to kill entirely.
    The only way is to put SO much spin that it kind of swoops upward, like when a paper airplane has too much lift. Then it would stop in midair for a second and drop straight down.
    It's still really awesome to watch even if not actually possible.

    That's a little bit of bending phisics. I mean in teory it could work, bur in reality di amount of spin required would lead the ref to call it a double. Also is pretty much impossible to give exactly the roght amount of power to reach that point exactly in front of your teammate. It's an anime so we can accept it, but in a real game is not possible. That amount of spin and that accuracy are not achievable.
