great stuff! But when you bulb the writer at the end to finish rationalism, you could have waited until next turn. A bulb doesnt force you take it that turn you can still end turn then it'll force you the turn after.
@PCJLaw I know these videos are a few years old now but I've been catching up on them for the past year or so and I love the Civ 5 content. I've been going through the Steam achievements list trying to get an unmodded Deity win on every civ, and Austria is one of the last I need. but I have some questions. if I want to do something other than a cookie-cutter 4-city science win, and make use of Diplomatic Marriage, would it make sense to either 1) start with just 1 or 2 large cities, pick tradition, prioritize GPT, and marry the best city states I can find to expand to 4? or 2) plan to go Liberty and make a very wide empire, marrying as many city states as possible and using their populations to drive science? I recently tried a Deity Diplomatic victory on Austria, but because of marriage math, at the World Leader vote I came up 2 delegates short and my victory window closed. so I don't think I want to try that again.
Yep, that's the power of arsenal of democraty. Gunboat diplomacy is also pretty fun to play, but it is nearly impossible to use in deity because tributing is so difficult at that difficulty.
Remember, it's not the Autocracy "Gunboat diplomacy" one! It's the Freedom one where you get 20 influence for a unit gift to a city state! (+15% military production) Incredibly broken when I can spam knights 1 turn in every city in the atomic era...
I was saying that you can have a very fun game making an autocratic diplomatic victory with Gunboat Diplomacy, which is very fun to play but nearly unusable in deity due to how difficult it is to bully city-state at that difficulty. Obviously it isn't that good in comparaison with Liberty who has Arsenal of Democraty (easy influence by gifting knights or lancers), and Treaty Organization.
Yes Oxford is worth more than a great scientist late game, however Oxford also gives you science once built and that science adds up. I think using Oxford for Plastics is a decent choice, Radio probably more ideal. Waiting too long with it loses a lot of science. Better just delay finishing rationalism for a late game free tech rather than delaying Oxford too much Imho.
Could you (re-?) discuss | demonstrate farming military experience on your "stolen-worker" city-state? I would think a massively promoted chariot->tank or trebuchet->artillery behind a slightly wounded lightening rod warrior->mechanized-infantry could be a devastating.
Good question! I rarely do it, although I should do it more. It matters much less on Quick Speed than on Standard/Epic because you don't get as many combat moves per era Basically, military units gain XP each time they give or receive a combat move. Versus barbarians, you can no longer gain XP if you've reached 30 XP already (level 2). There are no restrictions on combat vs city states. So... instead of immediately peacing a city state after you steal the worker, you would leave the war going and send all your spare units to fight the city state (retreating them when they're low health, and coming back when fully healed) This way, you can level up while at peace with all the other AI, and get access with super highly promoted units, which as you said, are absolutely brutal Hope this helps?
The tier 3 tenet in freedom for influence is way better at slower speeds cuz 4 influence per turn is worth way more in standard than quick speed. In speeds like epic it's strong too. But against deity ai gold, arsenal is better. With like 6 trade routes, you are generating 24 influence per turn. Pretty decent to supplement the gifting spree but not worth it objectively for Diplo win.
I haven’t played civ 5 in years and all of a sudden your videos start popping up for me. Got me playing again. Thank you for your content
This guy knows the game so well. I hope he returns some day.

Incredibly entertaining and interesting Civ V content. I love the explanations.

Maybe do domination using stealth/xcoms?
choosing host =/= choosing world leader, so you would've had to wait the 16 turns at the end either way
