In the Loguetown arc where Dragon presented, there was "coincidental" rain and thunder that saved Luffy, which could be Dragon using his DF power. So it's a foreshadow that dragon is heaven

Dragon obviously always cared about his own son, it's just that he couldn't spend time with him as his job trying to bring down the world government that's massively corrupt and allows literal slavery around the world is more important than being a father to one person. He doesn't 'just' have plot armor, it's literally a part of his character. For me, that's still a positive and beautiful thing for One Piece, being able to make his sort of plot armor make sense in different kinds of way whether it is people in the story recognizing it too (Smoker, Mihawk) or by different powers (devil fruit, VoAT, conquerors haki, will of d). I can understand if people disagree but some pseudo fans wanna pretend that it wasn't showcased since pre grandline time when this part exists in the series.
Plot armor is fine in animes but just having the protagonist win because of it seems really stupid. there should be a reason to somehow win, like katakuri when he increases his strength in observation, or when kaido mop the floor with him and he comes back better.

Plus, smoker is not strong. The reason Dragon stays in the shadows is probably to avoid a decisive confrontation when the Revolutionary Army is still not yet ready to go all out against the WG. If Dragon moves, someone on the level of an Admiral (probably all of them) will mobilize, just like they did for Whitebeard. That's the scary thing about Dragon. He's a looming grey eminence, patiently waiting for the exact moment to strike, and when he does, it'll be a raging storm like one never seen in the history of the world.
