Is that smile real or fake?

  • Do you smile when you're frustrated? Most people think they don't - but they actually do, a new study from MIT has found. What's more, it turns out that computers programmed with the latest information from this research do a better job of differentiating smiles of delight and frustration than human observers do.
The research could pave the way for computers that better assess the emotional states of their users and respond accordingly. It could also help train those who have difficulty interpreting expressions, such as people with autism, to more accurately gauge the expressions they see.

You can fake a smile, but you can't fake your feelings.

i will try to never fake a smile again! it is pointless and if I do people see that it is fake. so why do it in the first place?

The difference, in my opinion, is that humans look at the entire action and "get" what's happening from the it as a whole. A computer can look at a single image and decipher exactly what each part of the face is saying.
And then there's what @idontev3n stated; in the US, expression-reading isn't necessary. In many countries, however, something as simple as crossing the street or whether or not produce is fit for eating requires reading of expressions.

0:55 Top row - surprised smile (inward looking 'milky eye'). Bottom row (in comparison) - self-conscious smile (gathering 'sharp pupils')
1:20 OR... He was first disappointed. Then realized the whole thing was probably a trick and perceived it as quite smart.
