A lot of sayings get cut like that.
"Blood is thicker than water", meaning family is the most important thing, was shortened from "the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb" meaning that bonds you choose are stronger than those you inherit.
"Curiosity killed the cat" meaning you should be careful with your curiosity, was shortened from "curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back" meaning that finding the answers you seek may be hard but it's worth it in the end.

I'd rather be happy and not cry so if that means I'm on the bike, then I'd rather be on the bike. Nevertheless, it is a ridiculous detached statement from someone who was clearly a psychopath (killing someone), therefore she was not the kind of person to look to for life advice. Another thing to note that if you focus on a material thing to comfort you in the bad times then you will never feel fulfilled, as the perception of lack will always make you want more to reach the same high. Someone who still needs to cry and does so in a rolls royce won't be comforted, they will cry more because of the perception that the rolls royce is not enough. The more you know!

Patrizia's comment makes a lot of sense once you know what it's like to be dirt-poor lol. And it's not meant to be taken extremely literally. Basically, she doesn't mean that it's better to be sad in a fancy car than be happy on a bike, she means that it's preferable to weather human suffering as a rich person than being happy but poor. Or at least that's my take on it while giving her the benefit of the doubt.

Hm, you missed another downturn and rise. The last few years of Frida Giannini's direction were a mess as collection after collection was panned and sales were in the gutter. Gucci was not cool anymore and she was unable to maintain the interest of the industry, so she was fired. When Alessandro Michele came in he turned the house around from both design and profitability perspectives with a collection that he was forced to design in just a couple weeks. Almost overnight everybody was talking about Alessandro's Gucci and how his first collection of frills, color, and "faux-vintage" was a turning point for fashion that, at the time, was pretty centered on minimalism(see: Phoebe Philo's Celine, Delpozo) and a dark & serious aesthetic(see Alexander Wang, Gareth Pugh). Every vertical in the business saw tremendous growth- RTW, handbags, accessories, shoes, and most notably the men's line that, for decades, really only did well in suiting.
From a design perspective, his appointment was the nucleation point for the maximalism trend that we are still seeing the tail end of. It even seeped into adjacent industries like interior and industrial design. He rode that wave and started being heavy handed(and ironic) with the use of logos- that ushered in the Logomania trend we saw at the end of the 2010s. "Guccification" became another adjectivization of the brand that was tossed around in fashion circles as other designers started leaning into logomania and maximalism. It even ended up being used as a sort of in-joke in 2018 and was emblazoned on bags and RTW .
ps: Alessando's surname is pronounced (approximately) MEH-KE-LEH
pps: I've mentioned before, if you ever need someone with a fashion history and trend analysis background, let me know: _duplessis on IG.

Nice job with this video. I think you do an outstanding job with these videos. My opinion is you should do a follow up video to project how the black culture in hip-hop helped to catapult Gucci to what it is today. There is a gentleman by the name of DAPPER DAN who created the urban style of Gucci that we know today. Dapper Dan used to get the same exact materials that Gucci used to design his own style of the brand using their logo for rappers and r&b singers in the late 80s and early 90s. Once the culture started to see these designs worn by these celebrities it began to draw in the hip-hop community to buy the brand because of influence. Although Dapper Dan was sued for infringement by Gucci and other luxury brands, they copied his designs. Gucci realized his talent so much to the point that now Gucci has hired Dapper Dan to design his own collection of Gucci. He is also still one of the top creative designers for Gucci until this day. His influence on the brand is not talked about enough.

@@Thelawofficesofjameslarrasmith No, Shaun is correct. Rich folks are buying the higher tier product that tends to be quieter. Things like like leather shoes, handbags without crazy logos, suiting and the RTW. I think what you’re getting at is that “non-rich” people won’t have the discretionary to buy Gucci. Two things though:
      1. Those people are not buying the expensive stuff, they’re buying the flashy, cheaper items like t-shirts, small leather goods, logo heavy items, and sneakers. This portion of Gucci’s business is quite small in comparison so they will be fine during a recession even if they lost most of these purchases.
2: Since Alessandro Michele’s Gucci is so aspirational from a design perspective, people might double down and buy more. This would be in line with “the higher the heels, the lower the economy” corollary. The phenomenon is also seen with expensive makeup during economic downturns- people want escapism and to feel normal, like their wallet is not suffering.

I was a Gucci customer from 2004 to about 2008. That was the tail end of the Tom Ford era, and the shift in design, store identity/aesthetic, exclusivity, and (especially customer service) is so stark…
I recently stopped there to get a small accessory. The place was busting at the seams with people; the associates were downright rude (even though I had made an appointment); and they even had a visible cash register with a long line of people waiting (unheard of in the Ford era).
While it doesn’t affect me personally, it’s clear that they’ve embraced a less subtle approach to their “exclusivity” and perceived luxury shopping experience.
That’s not even mentioning the ghastly designs/products that feel like they were designed by children (and of course they scream “hey look at me”).
So while they’re doing great financially since Ford’s departure, the brand has embraced a lot of the negatives that Domenico De Sole worked hard to trim/eliminate.

Not having to worry about those things does wonders for a person’s health. » I don’t advocate riches.
