Ralph came down to Phasels Wood scout camp in Hertfordshire UK in about 1955 He used to look for "new talent" amongst the scouts for his Gang Show. Gave us a short talk and I'll never forget it. He was a great guy. No doubt about it.
If you're in NZ, or basically anywhere in the world where there are Boy Scouts/ Girl Guides/ Scouts, you'll find a gangshow. Just google scout and guide gangshow
The Great Ralph Reader (Mr Gang Show) met him once at Peterborough Gang Show has he came backstage to meet "The Gang" has a young cast member he passed me in the corridor and greeted me with " Hi Son How are you?" i said "Fine thanks Mr Reader" his reply was "It's Ralph son not Mr Reader " with a smile and held out his left hand for me to shake a Great Man who i'm proud to say "I met the Great Ralph Reader"
I met him at the Coventry Gang Show when my father was getting ideas for the Peterborough Gang Show. His was the most famous autograph I managed ever to get, but I cherished it.
We are fortunate to have a complete copy of the film, which is about an hour long. And we were fortunate to host Ralph as he passed through Auckland on his (only) visit to New Zealand, brought there by the Manawatu Gang Show at the time. Gang Show is alive and well in both New Zealand and Australia - see the links on our website gangshow.co.nz Ross Browne, Director, Auckland Central Gang Show.
I have just put together a gang show filmed around 1990...watch my playlist starting.... th-cam.com/video/7_S393ju5sc/w-d-xo.html This was a celebrity charity show called "The Gangs All Here". A memorial show for Ralph Reader. Lots of "old boys" in it who knew Ralph Reader...Jim Davidson, Russ Conway, Reg Cooper, Cardew Robinson, Chubby Oates, Don Smoothey, Joe Black and Drew Miller. if you just want to watch the scouts then part 10 of 13 is where to start. Hope you enjoy it!
Hello Scout HQ at Gilwell Park used to have copies on DVD of the UK release of the film which wasn’t in brilliant condition but was there. It was held by the Archives Dept. The US version of the film which this clip is from is better quality but the person I bought it from years ago on VHS (American NTSC) would not sell it outside USA. I got an American friend to buy it and post it to me. There was a man who is no longer with us too who was involved with Oxford GS I think who had loads of stuff including RR This Is Your Life. But I don’t know where all his collection went. I don’t think I have the whole thing on DVD and certainly can’t lay my hands on it. Sorry I am not more help.
I was a scout in the 1950s and still can't help singing along to this wherever I hear it. A true feel good song that always lifts my spirits.
I always love this part when I do gangshow 🥰
I was in a 1969 production at the Birmingham Hippodrome. Good times, good fun, an experience a young boy never forgets.
