The USS Shangri-La (CVA-38) exhibit is located on the 2nd deck Starboard side at Frame 155 to 160. It is just aft of number 3 elevator aboard the USS Hornet (CVS-12) berthed at the former Naval Air Station Alameda (NAS Alameda).

Shangri-La, my first ship out of A school (1/1958 to 2/1960) then transferred to the Hornet (2/1960 to 8/1960 as the Shang was going to East Coast & I didn't extend my enlistment. coincidentally years later I served on the Newman K. Perry DD 883 out of Newport, RI that had just collided with the Shangri-La in the Atlantic. I retired BTC in 1976. This video brought back memories, mostly good, some not so.

Just so all you Shangri-La sailors know it, we (I work on the USS Hornet Museum) have reorganized and relocated many of our exhibits, including the Shangri-La's. We now have every Essex-class ship (all 24 of them) represented on board. The series of exhibits is called "Sister Ship Row" and is on the second deck, port-side, starting from the area of Sick Bay aft. The members of the Collections & Exhibits staff worked with representatives of the Shangri-La reunion association (as we did with all of the sister ship associations) gaining their permission for the changes and formally documenting the contents of the exhibits.

I served on the Shangri-La from 1968 to 1971 and i was in A-1 Division. I was on watch in the steering room at the bottom of the ship when the lost he screw off the coast of Viet Nam. Let me tell you it was a scary moment when the 2500 lb hydraulic line broke and the steering room started filling with oil ! We were in battle stations at the time and locked in. Loved our time in Japan for repairs after tho. I have many, many good memories of all the cruises and my time aboard,

My dad helped build the Shang and was on the maiden voyage. He was on the ship till he got out of the Navy, his name was Edwin Lafayette Keen and he worked down in the engine room. Great video would love to go to this museum one day!

I served on the Shangri-La -last cruise 1970-Nam-I was in M division Evaps Foward and Aft-I would really love to hear from some old ship mates that made that cruise-I was on watch in the Aft Evaps when we lost the screw--I never seen the #3 shaft spin so fast as I did that day--and talk about all the Brass coming down the stairs--I couldn't salute fast enough--lol--

You should have been in the aft engine room when it happened-I was on watch and belief you me there were a lot of officers coming down the stairs -that shaft was spinning so fast it was starting to get hot--the bearing were really getting hot-oh the good ol days-:)
