In some pure irony, despite Torterra being Untiered by usage in Gen 7, it was quickly realized how insane it is, currently it sits at S Rank on the Viability Rankings alongside Eelektross and Jellicent, with some people saying it's indeed the best Pokémon out of these three.
Now we wait for them to turn the elemental Hyper Beams (Frenzy Plant, Blast Burn, and Hydro Cannon) into Close Combat-likes and make Steel Beam into a more standard recoil move, so Empoleon can also join in on the fun.

Turtwig was my first ever Pokemon and it will always hold a special place in my heart. Sadly only Infernape and Empoleon were competitively viable in prior gens... so these Gen 9 buffs are amazing imo. Being able to fully use my favourite starter trio competitively puts a smile on my face
Same, my first pokemon game ever was Pokemon Pearl for the DS back in 2015, and I picked Turtwig as my starter and ever since, the Turtwig line are my favorite pokemons, so happy Torterra got a massive buff in the modern gens
I love how showdown is using this weird mix of box sprites and custom sprites for the new Pokemon, while old Pokemon still have the very compressed models. It clashes so much.
I remember back in Gen 6 when people didn't think Blastoise should get Shell Smash because "its shell is a part of its skeleton." And now Torterra can break off its tree in the name of competitive viability.

Torterra is my favourite of all time. Even if it's short lived, even if it's just while Gen IX has Toterrastalization, I'm delighted to see him finally getting to strut his stuff. Hopefully Aurorus gets access to Great Neck's signature move Leaf Munch in Gen X so it can finally climb out of the depths of PU.
Random fun fact: If you Entrainment Iron Fist onto Torterra, its Headlong Rush would get boosted. This is because Headlong Rush is classed as a "punching" move, despite the fact that Torterra can learn it while having no hands. This is also the case with Great Tusk. The explanation is that the move's Japanese name is a sumo term, which is also why it is randomly learnt by Hariyama. But it is still funny to think that _Torterra_ and _Great Tusk_ can both learn, and often use, a punching move.
Whilst I don't think Torterra will be an OU staple, I'm so happy my all-time favourite starter got all the buffs he deserves. Easily gonna become a UU menace, which is a well deserved spot for the turtle boy.
I absolutely love how they buffed Shiftry and Torterra, as I am fond of their designs and Grass types in general. Apart from universal buffs like Terastallization or Loaded Dice, these guys only received things that were already in the game and needed to be given access to. Shiftry got Wind Rider, which is quite new, but other than that utility moves like Will-o-Wisp and Taunt, and Torterra basically only received Shell Smash and Headlong Rush, and all those are SO fitting it seems unbelievable that they didn't have them (or similar tools) earlier. I remember running Chlorophyll Shiftry on a sun team back in SM OU era with some success, even though most people found it terrible. Now Shiftry is infinitely better thanks to Wind Rider, and can even quite reliably set up itself. It's about damn time that they finally make some obvious changes to older, terribly designed (in competitive sense) Pokemon. A simple but smart change or addition can elevate even an Untiered Pokemon to UU or OU.
They did this before in Gen 6 (Speed Boost Scolipede) and 7 (Drizzle Pelipper, Drought Torkoal, and Sand Stream Gigalith) they just didn’t give anything a new ability in Gen 8, only new moves They also gave Gallade Sharpness and Sacred Sword since launch S/V
Wow, Torterra made out like a bandit this generation. Better Ground STAB, better Rock Polish, more Grass STAB options, more reliable coverage options than Stone Edge. Always liked Rock Polish Torterra as a finisher. Glad to see it's back with a vengeance.
I've been thinking it must be too slow to be consistent with Shell Smash, I didn't know it reached exactly 1 extra speed point over Dragapult and Landorus that's perfect
If I had a nickel for every time a turtle-based starter gained Shell Smash many gens after the move's introduction, I'd have 2 nickels which isnt a lot, but it's odd that it has happened twice by now.
The problem of Torterra being a Grass/Ground is not only that is has many key weaknesses (as you've said, flying, ice, fire...), the problem is that it has almost no resistances. That is the true problem. In competitive, resistances are more valuable than being weak to a lot of types. There's more to that, of course, movepool, abilities, stat distri., all of that matters in the end, but mons like t-tar or heatran are extremely good defensively despite being weak to a lot of types (and important ones btw, like tran, who is x4 weak to ground and weak to both fighting and water, or t-tar, having a x4 fighting weakness and x2 weaknesses to steel, ground, water, bug and fairy), but they have a lot of good resistances too, and that's what ultimately matters, because thats what enables your mon to switch in. Torterra doesn't resist shit. Almost every type you can think of hits tor for neutral damage. It doesn't matter if it is ghost, grass, dark, fairy, fighting, dragon, psychic, normal, steel... It resists ground and rock, which isn't bad, and is inmune to electric, that's all. edge quake coverage is not common and is restricted to very specific mons/sets, so most of the times you will be switching into more spammable moves that arent either ground nor rock, and electric coverage distribution is also limited. In other words, it wont be switching into anything. To put things into perspective, Empoleon shares with Torterra a similar number of weaknesses, but the key difference is Empoleon resisted 12 types back in generation IV. Ill repeat it: 12 types, 2 of them being a x4 resist and 1 an inmunity. So ye, it doesnt matter if you are weak to common offensive types like electric, fighting or ground when you tank the rest of the type table by yourself.

One of my first thoughts was that 75 sp.att at +2 might be able to run a mixed set, but sadly it doesn't look like it gets access to any interesting coverage to take advantage of that. Looks like pure physical will be the only way to go.
I've always been a huge fan of torterra. Love the design, love the typing, love the energy, and it's my first starter I completed a pokemon game with. That being said I've always been aware of it's competitive shortcomings compared to their gen 4 breathren. Seeing my old pal living his best life sweeping stuff with shell smash and headlong rush is absolutely fantastic. Bonus points for the fact that wood hammer can actually bring you close to your overgrow, which gives you extra power which is very nice. So proud of my boy, even if they doesn't land in OU I'm glad they're living their best life
Starting Pokemon from gen 4, Turtwig was the first ever mon I got in the games and the first I managed to raise to level 100. So hyped my boy is getting the treatment he deserved.

As someone who always picked the Grass starter and has Torterra probably as the number 1 favourite starter of them all, I have been hoping for it to get Shell Smash for the last decade
The one thing that’s kind of unfortunate is that if you wanted to use something like white herb, you would have to play around not using headlong rush before shell smashing to avoid the -1 defenses. This would actually be pretty relevant for surviving priority ice shard from something like weavile after the smash
I always thought Torterra had underrated potential given it did have double dance (sd and rock polish) and a good movepool. But now that it gets shell smash it gets one additional move slot for more coverage. Finally Torterra's potential is fully realized!!
i can see other priority moves beeing a way to handle it to specialy if it have used a headlong rush or two afther shellsmash considering it would bring you down to -2 or -3 defence, and if chipped from spikes, rocks or status effects from somethng like toxic spikes that would do a big amount of damage to torterra, but torterra probably going to break a hole or two in the enemys team or atleast do a big amount of damage first
I'm not sure if you've done this yet or not, but I think you should do a video about how good Abomasnow is in gen 9, Tera Water Abomasnow is actually pretty good, it can actually counter a lot of threats in gen 9, such as Iron Bundle, it can even tank a Facade from Ursaluna! And it can even counter the multi-strike Urshifu! Like I was able to get to Master Rank in Ranked battles this current season with an all Ice team and Abomasnow basically carried my whole team for the most part, I know Alolan Ninetales is probably a better Aurora Veil setter than Abomasnow, but Abomasnow is seriously surprisingly good in gen 9!
Id literally gone years assuming Torterra had shell smash, but had too terrible of a defensive typing and speed for it to matter. Never even crossed my mind that the turtle pokemon might not have the turtle move.
all sinnoh starters are really good now, empoleon with competitive and roost and torterra with shell smash. Infernape is always good. Guys remember to have ice beam
Turtwig was my OG starter way back in Diamond, and I’ve always had a soft spot for that evolution line. The Gen 4 starters are some of the best ever in my opinion, they’re definitely my pick for the best. You literally cannot go wrong as they’re all very cool and have interesting stat spreads/typings. Now that they’ve all gotten buffs, this is even more so the case.
small note, offensive Torterra can check King gambit if the situation needs it, being faster and able to live even +2 S.P. Torterra has to be Adamant + life orb to get a garanted K.O.with headlong rush.

i can see other priority moves beeing a way to handle it to specialy if it have used a headlong rush or two afther shellsmash considering it would bring you down to -2 or -3 defence, and if chipped from spikes, rocks or status effects from somethng like toxic spikes that would do a big amount of damage to torterra, but torterra probably going to break a hole or two in the enemys team or atleast do a big amount of damage first
Ive been using a special shell smash torterra with throat spray and hyper voice.
Torterra was my first pokemon I got to lv 100, so I've always loved it. So hyped it's viable now
I still don’t think this will take it to OU but I can still see it being great in RU/NU

I'm not sure if you've done this yet or not, but I think you should do a video about how good Abomasnow is in gen 9, Tera Water Abomasnow is actually pretty good, it can actually counter a lot of threats in gen 9, such as Iron Bundle, it can even tank a Facade from Ursaluna! And it can even counter the multi-strike Urshifu! Like I was able to get to Master Rank in Ranked battles this current season with an all Ice team and Abomasnow basically carried my whole team for the most part, I know Alolan Ninetales is probably a better Aurora Veil setter than Abomasnow, but Abomasnow is seriously surprisingly good in gen 9!
I think it'll do perfectly in at least RU. It'll do great things wherever it goes from here.
Id literally gone years assuming Torterra had shell smash, but had too terrible of a defensive typing and speed for it to matter. Never even crossed my mind that the turtle pokemon might not have the turtle move.
all sinnoh starters are really good now, empoleon with competitive and roost and torterra with shell smash. Infernape is always good. Guys remember to have ice beam

Turtwig was my OG starter way back in Diamond, and I’ve always had a soft spot for that evolution line. The Gen 4 starters are some of the best ever in my opinion, they’re definitely my pick for the best. You literally cannot go wrong as they’re all very cool and have interesting stat spreads/typings. Now that they’ve all gotten buffs, this is even more so the case.
small note, offensive Torterra can check King gambit if the situation needs it, being faster and able to live even +2 S.P. Torterra has to be Adamant + life orb to get a garanted K.O.with headlong rush.
