If you think gas mileage is high in vans, you obviously never owned an asian van. Suzuki APV is a 1.8 litre engine. Probably not much bigger than your yaris engine (which actually has a mazda engine in it). And where's the "maintenance" in a self built campervan??? You build it and it's like any other vehicle except you empty and fill water once a week. Over here many people "empty" greywater just by opening the valve a crack and going to the next spot. It's gone by the time they get there....

    • @sonofamountain2862
      @sonofamountain2862  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Link Knight here in America they stopped making Suzuki cars and vans cause they have a bad reputation for always breaking down which equals to a lot of maintenance.
The key here is long term performance and durability and low cost from gas and repairs.
Even if a 4 cylinder van is good on gas,the minute you pack it with a bunch of water and furniture it becomes useless for gas mileage and cost efficient.
      More stuff= more maintenance
      More weight =more gas

Hey. I'm n Puerto Rico, and was considering doing the same style conversion to my Ford Taurus as i may be homeless soon till November.
Very happy to see that it actually worked well! I already have a small ikea mattress i could use, and the front footwell storage is perfect.
I can park after work at the public beach that has showers and bathrooms. (Also, would need to install velcro screens, mosquitos)

love it! we carry a gas can partly for "just in case" but also keep in mind eastern sierra/desert gas is Way more expensive than most other places... we fill up our can in Bakersfield just to save a little money... gas can paid for itself long ago and saves us a few bucks every trip

potatothorn man you are so right about that!
Gas prices in the sierras is like armed robbery lol.
Last week it was 6.00$ a gallon for regular gas.
Going into Death Valley it gets worse, gas prices there will leave you broke.

I got a 6'2 inner spring mattress in the back of my van that can sit in place ready to sleep on without setting anything up. Only needs to be swung in besides the passenger door when I cook in the back. We're talking about a minivan here (hyundai trajet - dirt cheap van) with a 2 burner stove, freezer, sink, toilet, and hopefully a hitch mount shower sometime later on. They have a gap between the 2 front seats you can walk thru. Automatic transmission does 70mph no worries. All at a combined city/highway of 24mpg....

I had to custom make these, cause it’s really hard to find a roof rack for the Yaris .
Once I had all the parts measured correctly,I had to JB weld and then drill through the roof to screw the roof rack mounts to the actual roof, then I had to water proof seal it with clear silicone.
      It worked!!!
And no leaks, and it came out solid, I was able to put all my extra stuff up there.

I'm considering outfitting my 3 door Skoda Citigo into a micro camping car, as I already have the car and all my camping gear and it'd be very straightforward to convert.
Fuel economy is outstanding, but rather than carry fuel in plastic cans on the roof I bought a 10 litre steel fuel container made by Explosafe, which will live in it's own space inside the car beneath the raised deck by the full sized spare wheel.
There is no fuel smell using the Explosafe fuel can.
With a tailgate/hatchback tent, the car offers versatility, economy and practicality and the tailgate/hatchback tent allows for full standing height and privacy for toilet and shower use, as well as a great daytime room.
I intend to use four MSR Dromedary 10 litre water bags which will fit into the rear passengers footwell area, allowing for uncluttered raised deck space and low centre of gravity.
With all but the drivers seat removed there's quite a lot of space inside and one is limited by imagination only.

I drove my 2015 Honda accord from San bernadino CA to crothersville IN and was so nervous because I drove alone and I covered almost 7,000 . • @sonofamountain2862
      @sonofamountain2862  5 ปีที่แล้ว

kast26oo In my opinion you can’t go wrong with anything made from Toyota!!
I own 2 at the moment both have over 200,000 miles on them and they still function at 100%.
If your looking for durability and a car that won’t leave you stranded,I would go with a Toyota.
Now I chose the Yaris because it’s really good on gas and because I am a minimalist at heart,so I wanted the smallest car but still the most reliable ,so after months of research I ended up buying this vehicle .
It was terribly abused from its last owner,it never had any maintenance of any kind and it still ran perfect.
I was really blown away by its performance and durability even with zero maintenance.
But after I took care of all the regular stuff like fluids and brakes and spark plugs (maintenance) the car ran twice as good.
I drove it literally every where and I never had any issues, and I really beat the hell out of it,but still here it runs and drives beautifully.
The only thing or beef I guess that I have is going up big hills is a little slow, cause it’s a 4 cylinder car,it’s meant to be economical ,not strong.
But I shift it down to 3rd or 2nd gear depending on the hill and it crawls it’s way up nice and safely.
Over all I do recommend it.
Check out my latest update video if you get a chance.
      And thank you

@ 12:00 195mm is tire width. The next number is the % of the width that the tire wall is. The R is your rim size. I'm guessing those are 195/65 R15's or "195mm wide, 126mm wall height(distance from metal rim to the tire tread), with a 15in diameter rim." You could get wider wheels to help offroad while still maintaining that R15 rim size to avoid rubbing the fenders. Higher tire walls are better for bumpy surfaces so you were right to get rid of those ricer wheels.

I've had my 2008 Yaris since September of 2008. I retired shortly after that. I don't drive much. I still have under 40K on it. It's beginning to bug me. Maybe the road noise started when I bought new tires. I always buy tires that last longer. That may be the reason for the noise. With the road noise, the radio, and the fan, it's a noisy ride. Secondly, now there's a hatchback Corolla available. I believe it delivers the same mileage as the Yaris. I'd prefer the extra room for camping. EDIT: It turned out that the front wheel bearing wore out early!
