I have never written down my experience about the Cocteau Twins, so here goes...... I can always remember buying their first Cocteau Twins album Garlands shortly after it was released in 1982 (think I heard a demo played by the late John Peel on radio). Taking it home, playing it and being very suspicious because the sound was too perfect (thinking somehow it was fake!). I use to travel 20 miles every week-end to my nearest city (Bristol) to spend all my wages on records in a shop called 'Revolver' because they brought in loads of early Hip Hop records with an Electro sound imported from New York/US (still have them all - 100's of them),and I was mesmerized by the electronic sounds, as I was heavily getting into Soul/funk. I was still very much into British post punk sounds of Joy Division, Cabaret Voltaire, Wire ....and A Certain Ratio, 23 Skidoo which was post punk funk. I stuck with the Cocteau Twins and brought a couple of 12" Singles and an EP (still have them all). Their stuff was evolving from a Gothic Joy Division sound into this unique ethereal other worldliness. The guy in the record shop which I struck up a rapport with because he imported all this fantastic Hip Hop sounds use to tease me with the latest new imported records saying "we only have ONE of this, it's so good that I have already bought for myself", knowing that I was like a child in a sweet shop before letting me have it. His name was Grant, he recognised my good taste in finding a tune and took note of what was listening too (like the Cocteau Twins). He invited me to come round and watch his band practice called The Wild Bunch, but I didn't, worried that I would miss last bus home and get stranded. One week-end I went up to find the record store had suddenly shut down and I lost contact. i carried on buying records elsewhere, later getting into British funky stuff like Bassomatic, S-Express, Dee-Lite (from US) ...and Massive Attack (who I didn't know at the time came from my local city Bristol) ... I also became besotted with the Cocteau Twins music. So, my attention was raised when Elizabeth Fraser from the Cocteau Twins sang on a Massive Attack record called Teardrop (their biggest single) ... it was then that I found out that Massive Attack was a local band and my former record seller was Grant (Marshall) one of the main band members ...... nice to know my humble early Cocteau Twins influence was used in such dramatic effect! (Yes, I claim it). :D I love watching your face in this video - try listening to the Cocteau Twins album Victorialand ....it's like an out of body experience. Oh ....moral of the tale ...if someone asks you to go round and watch their new band.... f%%k getting the last bus home, do it! :)
I'm not even a huge Cocteau Twins fan, but this particular album is just one of the best ever put out. So dreamy, pure sonic molasses. In the most positive way it feels like being back in the womb. Loved your reaction! :)
Cocteau Twins are fucking brilliant. Painfully beautiful music. I'll never forget a road trip my wife and I took to Monterey CA. When we got there the sun was setting and we were sitting in front of our hotel, overlooking the bluffs and listening to "Heaven or Las Vegas". Amazing.
Cocteau Twins are whole mood. Songs like this really hit the spot when you're in a certain mindset. (Edit: For me the music is far more important than the lyrical content when it comes to song enjoyment. Some songs are really profound in their lyrics, but I don't want to listen to them over and over. Great lyrics are like a bonus.)
The last 2 albums have proper lyrics and IMO they're brilliant. Theft and Wandering around lost and Rijkean Heart probably the best in terms of lyrics.
This is one of my favourite emotional songs in my life. The next thing I am going to say is a bit deep, but this is what I think while listening to the song. I came across this song when a good friend of my passed away. I've listened to it three times in a row at the moment and the third time I was lost in tears. The verse of the song starts in minor and makes me think how life sucks incredibly when someone passes away and why it happened. Then it goes into major and i think about all the good times I had with him. Very weird, but an eye-opening experience with this song and I have been a fan of this band ever since.
oh Gosh. tell them hello from me next time. Although I met them all onstage in Columbus, Ohio in the late eighties, much to their dismay at the newport music hall. There has been nothing like them before or after.
Cocteau Twins music has always been a soundtrack to my moments of daydreaming. I heard those sounds in my head as a child in mid eighties and wasn't even aware where they were coming from. One day I heard "Pandora" and everything became oh so clear...
Cocteau twins has many different vibes in their songs, my fav song is deffinitely Wax and wane and it's a kinda dark and more upbeat and psychedelic in a way, but i also love cherry-flavoured funk 'cause it's a lot more chill and relaxed kinda song !!
I enjoyed this one. The first time I heard The Cocteau Twins was their 1984 "Pearly-Dewdrops' Drops" single on old college radio back then. Very mellow and jangly.
Spangled Maker was the first Cocteau Twins song I heard and I was drunk and had no clue what the name was. I ended up in a music store called “Music Plus” and purchased Heaven or Las Vegas. Then it was a search for all their stuff on vinyl. ❤️
At least with a group like this, unless you don't know there's no "lyrics", there's no pretense that the "words" actually mean anything. With a lot of groups, there's ALSO no real meaning, but there's the pretense that there's meaning in the lyrics. I actually can't complain about it because of this LACK of pretense that the words mean anything. Because there's deliberately no words at all. And the melodies of the group are soothing in a way. It's not even remotely my cup of tea personally, but, surprisingly even to me, I can't say that I consider this to be "garbage", because it really isn't. It's just an entirely different theory of what music can be about, and fills a need for some people. In this case, the human voice is purely being used as a musical instrument. And it's unimportant that there are no lyrics, but that they are making it sound as if there are...just at or beyond the edge of your ability to perceive.
Yeah this is a crazy band when it comes to taking sounds and bringing you places. Heaven or Las Vegas is another really cool track. Glad to see the reaction!
Awesome! Yes getting lost in the song is common for their music. I was introduced to them in 1986 via the song Lorelei, and I had the exact same reaction of getting lost in the song. Been a fan ever since.
Excellent observation my friend, my brothers introduce me to then when I was maybe just a kid and I love their music ever since so Angelic and uplifting. Thank you for the review this was excellent Cherry coloured Funk is one of my favorite songs of all time.
Been a fan since the 80’s and the Twins were the soundtrack to my life at Uni. I went to a party in Grangemouth in 84 and Liz and Robin were just leavings as we arrived; and Fish from Marillion arrived as we left.
wow, this is so funny that you listen to this in these times. Great! I love cocteau twins since i was 16 . My first album was Garlands. Still my favorite. Victorialand and Sunburst and snowblind, Treasure, also very great albums. The later albums are a bit TOO sweet for me. Great to see that it is still around with the new generations!!!
I've been fans of theirs since 1990 or so. Bottom line: it's either your kind of music or it's not. I like all kinds of music and genres, and if you like instrumentals this might be your style because you don't often know what the song is about. However, if you listen to their later music (Four-Calendar Cafe for example) the songs have actual lyrics that were made public by the band. Their early stuff is unknown or just random words from the dictionary that fit the music. Some songs are bright and pretty and some are dark and gray. I'm happy you liked this song though :-)

Not for everyone. Not something you will rock out to. lol. I used to pop that album before going to sleep. Saw them at Tulane University back in the early 90s. Sounded great live. The internet is a crazy place. I just found the set list for the concert in 1991. 18 songs played all of their best songs.
You weren't sure if you liked it, but you started to think about trying to sing along at 3:26 And, yeah, at 5:07, it just ends. It happens. There is _so much_ Cocteau Twins to chill out to. My mother called it "wallpaper music". Try _Sugar Hiccup,_ or _Love's Easy Tears,_ or _Pearly Dewdrops._ Also, and, try it at 75% speed.
Yes and he was clearly influenced by them. Check Martika's Love thy will be done (which he produced) and Cocteau Twins' Pitch the Baby. I also hear echo's in other Prince-songs from Cocteau Twins' Cico Buff.
Cocteau twins was my chill music back in the day. Songs i would like you to react too:- Gonna buy a hat - Chris Rea Driving with the breaks on - Del Amitri (Scottish band) Oh Jungleland - Simple Minds (Scottish band) Thanks.
haha!! Your reaction to this one cracked me up. It was definitely interesting. Didn't love it but I definitely didn't hate it. There were a couple spots that were a tad reminiscent of Erasure to me(I do love Erasure). Not sure if you saw my reply back to you the other day...we were discussing "Fall Cabal". Anyway, if you get the chance I really want to see your reaction to "Silent Running" by Mike + The Mechanics! It was a hit back in the 80's and I think you will be very intrigued with the message in it given the times we are living in now. I promise you're gonna love the song, it's super catchy! One of my old faves...
Cocteau Twins are my favorite band. Elizabeth Fraser is the finest singer ever. Thanks Heaven or Las Vegas or Bluebeard are good songs to start out with
Oh, and dude. I see you are a multi-instrumentalist but since I see a bass I will particularly direct you to a gentleman named Mick Karn (sadly, no longer with us). Originally with the band Japan (and also a multi-instrumentalist), you may never hear a more unique bass within the context of a pop song (and I'm an old dude, I realize what a potentially inaccurate statement that could be). Mick played bass, woodwinds and sax. Probably other instruments. From his Japan days, start with "Sons of Pioneers", "Alien", "Swing"; Listen to the bass, and the wind instruments. Japan was a bit glam, a bit New Romantic, and completely other and evolved significantly through each album.
For those of you who like this kind of chill sound, try the similarly beguiling song below. "Bittersweet" by Michael e th-cam.com/video/RL7zN79CK5k/w-d-xo.html It's beautiful, and there's no way I can describe it that will do it justice. So I won't even try.
I apologize for the PayPal thing. I just got caught up in "I want this song circulating!" And there's been several reactors where I just request it in the comments and they either stop doing reactions or stop doing videos altogether so I got a bit anxious about "whatever it takes I want this reaction". Anyhow thank you and I'm glad you like it. It's random I know but I kind of like not trying to listen to the lyrics and just soaking the music in as a whole.
Ah, The Cocteau Twins, lol. I think I've wondered before what you might think of this "unusual" (cough..."weird") group. Btw, I don't know if anyone else has said this, but they are neither "twins", nor is either of their last names "Cocteau". Which I guess is appropriate, since their "lyrics" are fake as well. But, yeah, kinda neat to listen to for awhile.
There are no twins in Cocteau Twins. There are no twins in Thompson Twins. However, in _Tintin,_ there are a pair of twins. In the original French (Belgique), they are the Cocteau Twins. And in the English translations, they are the Thompson Twins. Problem solved. (This might not be true.)
@Janette M haha! I'm amazed that I've never heard of this band before and so many others have. I was in middle & high school in the 80's! We listened to all types of music from Erasure, Depeche Mode, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake...lol quite the hodgepodge but this one was new to me!
you're listening to the greatest female vocalist to ever grace the face of this Earth.
Maybe second to Joni Mitchell, but that’s just because she’s an actual angel
Yes. My favorite of all time. I accidentally met her once. I fanned out. I usually don’t do that.

However, in _Tintin,_ there are a pair of twins. In the original French (Belgique), they are the Cocteau Twins. And in the English translations, they are the Thompson Twins.
Problem solved.
(This might not be true.)
My favorite band. Here is a video explaining the lyrics:

Listened to them smoking pot in the 80’s
@Janette M haha! I'm amazed that I've never heard of this band before and so many others have. I was in middle & high school in the 80's! We listened to all types of music from Erasure, Depeche Mode, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake...lol quite the hodgepodge but this one was new to me!
Blue Bell Knoll, 1988, my senior year in college. I was astonished the first time I heard the entire CD.
@J's Coffee Talk
1984. _Pink Opaque._ Hadn't tried pot yet.
But CT sure is great on the mellowness of Mary Jane.
sexy, huh?
you don't have to listen to the lyrics..you can focus on the music and the singing! i could care less about lyrics
What? The lyrics have meanings...
They don't
Well, there's "meaning", but it's mostly sones to the force of the looped guitars.
Not much of a reaction at all to one of the greatest bands and singers of all time. That's my reaction to this lack of a reaction.
I just didn't feel anything about this music, but loved the look on your face when it abruptly stopped 😂😂
That whole album is amazing. This is one of my least favorite song on it. Start with track 2 and end with this one.
Didn't really care for this one .. but that's just me. Thnx Ty
This was nice & chill & mellow, always liked this group too.. ahhh, the 80’s 😊🖤
matt becham i think u have to have been kinda in tune to new wave music in a way to know the group, they weren’t super mainstream u know?
Try this one, if you like this kind of chill sound.

I can see bands like Slowdive take inspiration from this.
Liz has got a supreme voice. This song doesn't give her the chance to show it off!!
