A suggestion if I may. When gluing up the two ends together, a system like you used to drill the holes would work as long as you had something the glue would not bond to. Giving you a really good way to clamp it while the glue sets. Just my 2 cents worth. I love the idea and I'm going to try it, although in SE Georgia a cool glass of sweet tea and air conditioning are in order. Keep up with the videos, They are awesome!
Option could be to cut other shapes and glue to the inside. When light shines through you would see them? Thanks Matt. Hoping to contribute to your site as a Patron this coming year.
Any finish recommended? Was thinking like like a spray lacquer... wonder how that would hold up to the heat... I am making one, just want to make sure it's durable, anything maybe to coat the edges with so it can hold up to a move or two. Maybe coat the very edge in a little super glue...? Am I over thinking this?
I haven't applied a finish as of yet, so far I don't think they need one, but at some point I'm sure I'll want to add something. I'm leaning more towards a simple spray on finish, something like a shellac or lacquer will probably be more than enough. As for the heat, surprisingly they don't get as hot as one might think they would, so that's far less of an issue. Since I used a paper-backed veneer, I'm not evening considering issues with the edges, they're pretty stable.
The lighting itself is easily available at some home centers, but eventually I ended up picking up another one at a website called www.paperlaternstore.com that have a ton of great choices.
Hi Matt,
That is an awesome lampshade. We are always amazed at what people can make with wood veneer.

Matt Vanderlist great! Thanks for the reply.
Tell me about light wattage and heat on the veneer.
Thanks,
JimE
The light fixtures recommend only using 40-60 watt bulbs. As for the heat, nothing's exploded into flames yet.
Nice work Matt! Hey where can I get a black straight edge like yours?
Lee Valley. It's their aluminum straight edge, it comes in either 24", 38", or 50". Great tool!
Matt Vanderlist AWESOME thanks Matt! I need one of those.
Great project Matt! Where did you get the lamp kit? I must have missed it.

You love lamp? I like turtles! Are you following up on your next video with a turned base for one of the lampshades?
That sounds like a good potential project, but for now I think I'll just hang these above a favorite chair and snooze with a book in my lap lol.
Where did you get that straight edge?
they can be purchased from lee valley tools
Like John mentioned, it's available at Lee Valley. It comes in a few lengths, this is the middle length.
Ha, since yesterday our days a going to be longer,)
So what you're saying is that I'm a day late...possibly even a dollar short too? LOL!!!
Matt, ate you just saying you love random things you see in this room? FYI: my home smells of rich mahogany.
I need to lay low for awhile...I may have killed a man with a trident
All of my woodworks I am making with woodprix. Google and try it.
