  • Toby Hodges was aboard Shamrock V, the oldest existing J Class, as seven J Class yachts raced for the first time ever. See the action from onboard the J Class Shamrock V in Bermuda as seven Js are expertly guided around the course by around 30 crew members each. Shamrock V is smaller and lighter than the modern J fleet so can only compete on handicap

I've only seen these kinds of 'J ' yachts as old photos, drawings, and decorative shelf sculptures. It has never been my pleasure to see and feel the glory of this extremely rarified world of classic J Class style yacht racing.Truly this is so far from my world that it is otherworldly, but I thank you for this gorgeous glimpse into the beauty and teamwork involved - especially given the backdrop of the Shamrock V's overpowering classic beauty. Thankyou.

Classic racing, not just in a superficial, rhetorical way but in the way these boats handle in the film. It says a lot about how they feel.

    1990 J-Class on Tour
    Shamrock V/ Endeavour
The main halyard winch on JK3 was the ONLY one with an electric assist for the last few meters.
Everything else was pure horsepower. Standing grinders in the mid and aft decks.
    THAT was real deal.
Glad I was part of it....

J5 (Ranger) , J8 (Topaz), J-H1 (Lionheart), J-K3 (Shamrock V), J-K6 (Hanuman), J-K7 (Velsheda), J-S1 (Svea), very, very , nice. A pitty that J-K4 (Endeavour) wasn't there the eternal rival of Shamrock V. The longest of them all J-S1 (Svea) with 43,6 meters.

3:00 You cut out the spinnaker hoist! Still, the gybe is nicely shown, and the takedown.

They are beautiful vessels indeed and wonderful to see them being raced as originally intended, but those black carbon sails should not be seen on yachts of this vintage.

Great video, thanks!!!I'd love to have the oportunity to sail at least once with a J class, but unfortunately I would not be able to help in a race.

Well certainly not with the electric winches which they seem to allow. In the 1930s when the sails had to be adjusted with muscle power I should think the more the merrier. I am not sure they should have gone down this route...

Yeah. After this they need to get into a J S1 like Svea. Only 180 tons and 173ft mast. Not that big.

Didn't realize you were smaller than the rest and that you were going for the handicap win. Thought they had you at the starting line and that you couldn't make it up. So with the handicap, how did you finish?

So I just watched a vid about one of the coolest, slick riding, deck hand soaking yachts one could imagine, and now you’re telling me there’s a “fleet”?!?! Is anyone really trying to win? Be honest now...

carole lerman they are "naked" 3DM carbon sails. They are apparently lighter that the while ones used previously.

I crewed a few times on a tiny Thistle for some races--it was my BF boat. I just wanted to relax on a Saturday, but he was competitive (what we do for love.) It made me respect these serious guys. I guess they train for YEARS and YEARS to get a coveted spot on these J boats. Check out "Yachting World's" video of "Endeavor"--I dare you not to cry--she's so pretty. Thanks YW! th-cam.com/video/tgCMsSqfR1A/w-d-xo.html
