Recorded sometime in the early 60's. 63', 64' or 65'd be my guess. DDR on the Fiddle, Buck on Acoustic, Tom Brumley on Steel, Doyle Holly on Bass and Willie Cantu on the Drums
I was a country music performer for over 50 years before retiring my group (Country Tradition) in 2004. Don Rich was one of the most talented musicians I've ever known. His talent was inborn. The whole Rich family was musically gifted. And yes, that was him playing Orange Blossom Special; and he could play anything else on the fiddle that was ever written. What a loss when he was taken from us at such an early age. RIP, my dear friend Don Rich.
Heck of a run there, John! Although I just realised your comment is 12 years old, and you might not be with us mortals here. Let's see, 50 years of music, retired almost 20 years ago, if you were just a wee bit 20 year old when you started, you're in your 90's. Give us a holler Mr. LIVINGston!
Don Rich was a fine world class country musician. Excellent on both guitar and fiddle. His feel, timing and execution of this song were perfect. You rarely hear this song played this well today.
ALL I CAN SAY IS DON RICH WOW~~WHAT AN AMAZING SINGER, GUITAR PLAYER & FIDDLER...TAKEN FROM US WAY TOO SOON..HIM & BUCK WERE A GREAT PAIR...NOW THEY ARE "TOGETHER AGAIN", IN HEAVEN...RIP DON & BUCK...YOU ARE GREATLY MISSED
That darling man..........I remember when he died. I used to watch him and Buck Owens years ago, on TV. I love this video of him playing Orange Blossom Special. Thanks to whomever put it on UTube.
This particular video is through the magic of editing. I'm not sure the original clip still exists, the tapes recorded over is what I've learned. But what it is is a compilation of Don on fiddle video pieces patched together as if it was originally recorded with the music. But you can tell, the strokes of the bow, Brumley's picking, nothing is well synched. Someone did some good work trying to make it look like it was recorded in composite. Having said all that, I still love it. Orange Blossom Special is a classic, Don was a master on the fiddle, and I'm guessing the audio recording of him is real, just with visuals laid down with it. Someone on here was speculating what year. I'm thinking it was 1966, based on the style of suits they're wearing and when the Ranch Show was being created. But I don't think it was '63-'65.
Which is why most bluegrass festivals don't allow the Orange Blossom Special or Duelling Banjos. Both are crowd favorites & putting different styles & tempos to the music has been known to start fights in the crowd.
This has been my favorite fiddle tune for many years and this is by far the best I've ever heard it done. Don Rich was a very talented guy, and a very nice looking guy, it's a shame he got killed. Thanks for posting!
You could see how much Buck Owens and Don Rich loved making music together. Don was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1974, aged only 32 ~ this had a huge impact on Buck, understandably and very sadly.
I must have watched 40 versions of this song on you tube looking for a good, clearly identifiable "Orange Blossom Special" without a bunch of improvisation and showing off and without 10 minutes of people blabbing before they start playing. And I am SO glad to say that I have FINALLY FOUND IT!! Glory Hallelujah and Thank God for these no nonsense, excellent musicians and thank you, whoever loaded this, for sharing it with us!! I was just trying to show my 27 year old son how awesome this fiddle tune is; I didn't know it would take me all evening to find a great rendition of it. But THIS was worth the search. Cheers!
Thank you for posting!! This is my favourite version of Orange Blossom Special! Far the best fiddle music ever, I just can't stop listening to it! Unbelievable performance!
The audio is definitely Don Rich and the Buckaroos. The video was edited in from the video of Don Rich and the Buckaroos playing Cajun Fiddle. Look up Cajun Fiddle on TH-cam and you'll see what I mean.
What a phenomenal talent he was and what a tragic loss to not only his family and devoted fans but to the music world in general.dearly loved and so sadly missed.RIP Don Rich, now singing harmoney with Gods choir of Angels
Nice fiddlin' Don Rich!........This is the first COUNTRY band I've ever seen feature the instruments. In country, it's only about the singin'. I can't believe a country band actually doing an instrumental ! I guess they have some brains afterall!
I could listen to Don all day. Well, I guess I kinda do that anyway. I never get tired of hearing him sing and play. Wow what a talented man. I was reading the insert on his Anthology album and it says he was married and they had 2 children. I sure wish they would post something.
Well thanks to whoever took the time and effort to put this together, so we can see Don playing the fiddle at the same time we hear him. He had such a four-square way of playing ANYTHING: Always perfect. I love this straight-ahead rendition of OJS...it's really perfect, including the synchopation and follow-on beats that are missing in many other renditions. Also Don's use of the light reverb making the sound so evocative of the distant train...just perfect, as usual.
This is the Great late Don Rich playing the Orange Blossom Special, the actual recording. Jay Mac Donald was on steel guitar. This video was taken from the Buck Owens Ranch Show and it's just some fancy camera work. Sounds good though .Don was the best. RIP Don -----Dave
I hate to admit it, but I have never heard of Don Rich. I stumbled across a couple old videos of him, and all I can say is WOW! This guy is SOOOO talented. Great stuff.
Every time I would See Buck, I would think of Don. He Was a Pro & greatly missed. Lets Hope Buck and Don Are having a Great Time Playing their Heavenly Music, rip................
If ever I need to put a smile on my face, this song will definitely be my first choice. I loved it as a child and still hold it dear to my heart - what an energetic, uplifting jingle.....
Flawless. Don Rich had so much energy. Buck Owens. And Don picked out this band. All of them pros. What a life. Grueling as i must have been at times. But loving what they did...
Fun fact: if you crank your vehicle up to 100 mph when listening to this version, you will travel 3.33 miles plus face a mandatory court appearance if pulled over by Sgt Owen Shelby of the Tennessee Highway Patrol. Don't ask me how I know.
I am so happy to find this version. Now, I have two favorite versions of this song, Billy Vaughn`s and this one. They both are wonderful to me. Thank you for posting.
I like this always liked Buck Don and the Buckaroos.....can imagine how hard it was for Buck to lose Don in that motorcycle accident in June 1974 heard he never got over it...kinda like me when I lost my dad this June (2012)....Don was great at guitar and fiddle and was funny..check out those suits!!!.....snappy weren't they????...they were reunited in heaven 32 years later when Buck died in 2006
I have the Don Rich Anthology - Country Pickin and I can assure you that this is Dangerous Don Rich playin' on this video. It might be a bit off but it is definetely the great Don playin' in it\ Have a great evening!
It used to be that you could go to the back of the Ryman Auditorium and go up some steps and you would be behind the stage of the Opry. A stranger came in by this way and someone asked him who he was and it turned out that he wrote the Orange Blossom Special. He wanted to meet Johnnie Cash which had a big hit with this song.
Don was an incredible fiddler and guitarist no doubt. Check out the Johnson Mountain Boys version of this song by fiddler Eddie Stubbs if you want to hear a very fast rendition.
Beautifully done! :D Makes me want to holler! :D Note to cameraman: Don't close in on the fiddler! We can't see his other hand, rather a key part of fiddling.
This isn’t REALLY him in the video, even if the audio and video are him… the video is clearly edited and spliced from his “Cajun fiddle” performance on the same show. Overlaid audio of OBS…
Nudie also made suits for the Flying Burrito Brothers, Gram Parsons was iconic with cactuses and weed images. Sneaky Pete Kleinow' s had a pterodactyl on it.
It's not low FPS. It's several different video clips spliced together to fit the tempo of the song. It's pretty obvious if you watch close. To my knowledge, they didn't do this song on the ranch show.

Don was so blessed
One of my favorite fiddlers
The video is Don playing Cajun Fiddle. It's on You Tube. OBS is just playing over the video.
Don Rich was a fine world class country musician. Excellent on both guitar and fiddle. His feel, timing and execution of this song were perfect. You rarely hear this song played this well today.

You said it all LU.
That darling man..........I remember when he died. I used to watch him and Buck Owens years ago, on TV. I love this video of him playing Orange Blossom Special. Thanks to whomever put it on UTube.
Just has to be the best version of this classic.
Brilliant *************

THIS is how this song is supposed to be played!! Some play it entirely too slow, or take too many liberties.
THIS version is perfect
+matt m RIGHT on. For once someone with good taste and class!
Which is why most bluegrass festivals don't allow the Orange Blossom Special or Duelling Banjos.
Both are crowd favorites & putting different styles & tempos to the music has been known to start fights in the crowd.
The sensationally talented Don Rich..what a tragic loss to the music industry..so loved RIP DonRich

I'm an owner-operator truck driver 4 years now and named my first truck I bought, the Orange Blossom Special after this song.

The audio is definitely Don Rich and the Buckaroos. The video was edited in from the video of Don Rich and the Buckaroos playing Cajun Fiddle. Look up Cajun Fiddle on TH-cam and you'll see what I mean.
Don, you'll always be remembered. The man is irreplaceable.
My Mother used to dance to this song while a live band was playing it and wear out the band players dancing to it !!!! wtg MOM !!

Nice fiddlin' Don Rich!........This is the first COUNTRY band I've ever seen feature the instruments. In country, it's only about the singin'. I can't believe a country band actually doing an instrumental ! I guess they have some brains afterall!
J'adore cette interprétation par Don Rich, un super musicien, la version jouée par the Kempters est aussi fabuleuse.
I could listen to Don all day. Well, I guess I kinda do that anyway. I never get tired of hearing him sing and play. Wow what a talented man. I was reading the insert on his Anthology album and it says he was married and they had 2 children. I sure wish they would post something.

Never get tired of the Orange Blossom Special.
Dangerous Don is a double threat: Tele and Fiddle chops. Nice solo, as always from Tom Brumley on the pedal steel.
Awesome ❤
The whole band is perfect
amazing and fantastic
Flawless. Don Rich had so much energy. Buck Owens. And Don picked out this band. All of them pros. What a life. Grueling as i must have been at times. But loving what they did...

Thank You very much; i really like this. This is the way Orange Blossom Special's supposed to be played. Nothing does it like fiddling it out.
absolutely fantastic........nice one Don.....
It was recorded on Feb,13th,1963. Buck and Don are the only originals on the studio recording !!
The studio version laid over footage of Don playing live.
just perfection
The best!
Buck n Don such awesome musicians
Wow, how about that! Don't think I've seen that before. Awesome.
I agree...I have not heard this played better.
He had a lovely fiddle too. Amati type F holes.
Superb.
Just awesome. What a talent. What a loss so young
Keltic, I think those are Nudie suits, named for Nudie Cohn, a tailor with a talent for using rhinestones!

that a good dame fiddle tune very good.

Nudie also made suits for the Flying Burrito Brothers, Gram Parsons was iconic with cactuses and weed images. Sneaky Pete Kleinow' s had a pterodactyl on it.
Saw that THANG!, Awesome mix, too!
Lovely performance
