- Robert Mone walked into a school one day in 1967 and held the class hostage. After brutal acts, he was sent to a high security facility, where he later broke out with a fellow inmate and the crimes got worse. And we haven't even got to his dad yet, who wanted to be just as infamous as his son.

Mike.. You covered my family 4 years ago, 3yrs after our loss of our Matriarch and Patriarch by someone in our family. We as a family were so appreciative.. I don't want to put my family name here yet (ongoing), But I just wanted to tell you from myself, and also my siblings.. We could not have ask for a better person to tell our story. You gave us humor but also respect and in the way that you did the humor, Pop would be so damn proud because his silly ass was nothing but, "HUMOR TO PUT THE HEART BACK INTO PLACE.." I totally agree. It's such a sweet gesture. I even find myself saying it back to the screen and meaning it almost like he's a surrogate son or similar. He really has become a beloved family member to many of us and his closing 'because i love ya' statement brings comfort and connection despite some of the dark content.
I’m stuck on how two psych patients got an axe and a pitchfork INTO the “Social Room”! Like, WHERE the HELL was the staff?! What a horrible story… within a story…Y’all have a great weekend, mind the heat!!😊
There’s a couple things to understand with something like this.
For one it was the early 1970s so a very different time.
Also some state facilities back then did not separate patients between violent and non-violent offenders and there’s certain patients that would’ve probably been able to have facility jobs which would’ve had them access to certain tools believe it or not, but even prisons nowadays work like that. You could be a trusted inmate at a prison facility and have access to power tools saws drills again they’re not gonna be handing those off to some guy that’s in prison for murder, but my point is off of that logic if they were able to make identification cards and still uniforms, it wouldn’t surprise me if they stole them and then stash them somewhere in the facility.
Also, during the 1970s there wouldn’t be facility cameras everywhere like there would be nowadays so it would be a lot easier to hide your activity when you’re not being watched by guards

@@Faceplay2 Some prisons actually did have CCTV in the 1970s and if you've ever seen the 1979 Porridge movie - which was filmed in the real life HMP Chelmsford that had been closed temporarily following a fire - you can see various CCTV cameras mounted on the walls. But you're right in thinking it wasn't very common and it was extremely unlikely that the likes of Carstairs would have had it.
Nowadays inmates are searched going in and out of pretty much everywhere, including church, and they are much more serious about inventory and checking the condition of items. In the prison kitchens, the staff draw outlines of the knives etc. in marker pen so they can immediately see if bits of metal have been broken off or the implements modified in any way. In any event, it's all kept in locked cabinets and you need to ask the staff to get it for you.
Prison security has just got much better over the years.

Sometimes I can watch a good majority of a case and not realize I've heard it before. Each content creator (story-teller) can give different info, show different pics, etc. and it's almost unrecognizable as being the same story. I just wish Mike's videos were longer. 😢

It was the 1970s. Scotland was basically in the dark ages back then and this stuff was merely a suggestion.
Prisons in England were much more secure and many even had CCTV.

I'm an ER doctor. You might be surprised at how often paramedics or other medical professionals either think someone is dead when they aren't or don't notice that the patient died / stopped breathing while standing right next to them. There are various errors that contribute to this, but the two most common is a phenomena known as "anchoring bias" and "confirmation bias". Anchoring bias is a tendency to rely heavily on the first piece of information you hear. Confirmation bias is the tendency to see new information as consistent with and supportive of what you already believe to be true. It works like this. Someone is severely injured or is near death from a medical condition. A bystander calls 911 and says "I found a dead body" or "there was a motorcycle accident... ughhh... this guy is dead." The information is relayed to emergency services, who then expect to see a dead person. When they arrive, they look at the victim. Maybe he is covered in blood or has grievous injuries or appears not to be breathing. There might be some subtle signs that the victim is not dead, but these are overlooked (if he is dead, why is he still bleeding) or discounted (did I just feel a very weak pulse there? No, I think that was just my own pulse). It is very important to follow your usual procedures and to make your own independent assessments every single time. Have you ever noticed that when at doctor's office or ER, you get asked the same questions 4 times by 4 different people? Many patients see this as a sign of disorganization and get frustrated by it. The fact of the matter is that I do know what the secretary / nurse / referring physician says is going on, but I'm asking you anyway for a specific reason.
Oh, and wear a seatbelt / helmet!

I worked as a nurses aide in a hospital after high school. A few weekends before I started a lady was declared dead and an aide sent in to wrap the body for the morgue. The lady was sitting up and said “I have a terrible headache.”😮. Moral, don’t let ‘em pop you in the freezer til they’re dang sure you’re dead 😊

@Rdwrer I'd like to point out that the US has the highest recidivism rate in the world- almost twice that of the UK. So maybe they know what they're doing. Maybe giving people longer sentences and no actual rehabilitation efforts and treating them worse than animals just creates a bigger problem- it just turns people into bigger criminals who are much more likely to reoffend. The US also turns their inmates back out into society. However it's usually after a longer sentence for even minor crimes and our "system" makes it extremely difficult for them to get any kind of job that you could actually survive on. But sure, let's lock them all up forever. We'll start using the homes of people with that exact attitude, seeing as how with the highest prison population in the world, we already don't have space for the ones we have in custody.

Without even listening to a word,i know exactly what happened here...i grew up,terrified when this was happening...not far away from the scene here in Scotland!
What the hell were the police thinking, giving Robert another hostage by sending Marion into the classroom? Madness.
I don't know. Killing him with kindness? No wait! Hear me out. I heard a true crime story not too long ago (like I don't watch them everyday) and this sweet teacher was so kind to the would be killer that he simply couldn't stay mad enough to carry it out. It was like the first time in his life someone had been so nice to him.
Now I'm not saying that would work every time, but... you never know what might break the spell of madness. If only long enough to get him to relinquish his weapon.
Plus maybe the teacher really wanted to. I can actually see that being the case. Teachers are tight. My mother was a teacher in the 60s and 70s and some of the strongest friendships she ever made were with her fellow teachers. And one of her favourite pieces of jewelry was a gift from her students. She wore it almost everyday.
If they had not sent her in, then what would have happened was a standoff, the kids wouldn't have been let out, and the teacher probably would have died anyways. I'd say it actually almost worked

@@DBpsychology The Irish have long been known for their storytelling. Southerners are, too. You might want to check out of a few of them to hone your delivery. Donald Davis is one guy I knew waaayyy back in the 1970s when he was a Methodist minister.

I do think your first premise is correct. Father deciding to do the same isn't really - son influencing father. It's father influenced child, but never thought of taking it to the hilt his son did - so did.

It's mind boggling that you can kill 3, 4 people in the UK and still get out of prison eventually. That Thomas should be buried under the prison, not released.
Sentences were much lower in the old days, but prison conditions were quite a bit harsher and the prison population were made of nastier stuff back then. It balanced out.
Also it's Scotland. Sentencing in Scotland is weak as water, always has been, everyone knows that and it's often complained about, but there's no effort to reform and toughen the system because some NIMBYs want "rehabilitation". The system needs to recognise that some people are beyond help and will always be a danger to the public.
Not so long ago, there was a case in Scotland where someone was convicted of the r-word - and the judge excused him from going to prison. Absolutely outrageous and even senior politicians were banging on the desk demanding answers, but again, no attempt to reform the sentencing rules to make that impossible. I think the appeal for that one is still ongoing.
Said EU human rights, so that’s part of the bargain of being in the EU. Personally I think it’s crazy to lock up any teen for their entire lives with no parole-and I’m American.
Now three murders and parole after three years is ridiculous. There needs to be enough time served for punitive reasons but there are other factors that are considered when sentencing people to prison.
Rehabilitation, prevention of other people committing the same crime, punitive, and two more I don’t feel like looking up….Anyway, these factors were taken from common law (brought over on the Mayflower).
@@halfbakedproductions7887 When you demand harsher sentences, you should consider mistakes in the system that happen quite often and that one day you might be the one getting a life sentence without committing any crimes. Besides, are there any data that proves that harsher sentences lead to reduction of crimes? - I don't think so. It can only be the case when punishment for a crime was virtually non-existent before.
Not these days many have been sentenced to minimum 40 yrs plus for murder lately 1 charge. There's also some with no release date.
@AlexV6 please. Of course such a system needs better oversight but I'd rather push for that than allow garbage to live free.

I remember my mother talking about this case ,when they escaped from Carstairs people in Edinburgh were on alert as the state hospital is not even 30 miles from the city.

It's because the idea of a mass shooting in a school was unthinkable and had not entered the public conscience yet. The teachers and the cops thought it was gonna be a hostage situation at worst.

That unborn child at the beginning would be the same age as me. I remember when in primary school there was an urban legend floating around that was based on this case. You know how little kids like to scare each other.

I'm a retired registered forensic psychiatric nurse/counselor and have worked with these kinds of people for many, many years and BELIEVE ME, It's FAR worse to get a psychiatric sentence. I've seen patients who have died of old age when they would have been free for years if they did normal time.

I’ve been in a psych hospital. As someone who was just unwell and needed supervision and medication initiation. That place scarred me for life 😵💫. I wasn’t psychotic, just extremely depressed and having unalive thoughts. Was in a bed next to a psychotic patient and boy was that traumatic. I know she was also very unwell but she did have me scared the entire time I was there. I signed myself out in the end. I just thought, I can’t get better here, I need my home, parents and my cat. They are not great places!

Mike I have notifications on so that get it everytime you post. I was a Psych Nurse in a Federal Prison. Ran the clinic with the Psychiatrist on staff. It was not noted in the chart ehat the offense had been. One memoriable inmate so polite, courteous, quiet that I wondered what he had done. I finally ask the Dr. turns out he had murderer his girlfriend's 6 month old baby, by shoving tiolet paper down its throat because it wouldn't stop crying. I had s very difficult time interacting with him after that. I understand why the offense was not noted in the chart. You just never know.

I live in Dundee and remember when all this happened The young teacher wasn't married for very long ,she was from England and was very well liked by her pupils ,so tragic . The building where the women were murdered was demolished so after . It'was crazy to see the newspapers showing those monsters walking about smiling ,mingling with tourists in beautiful scenery.
I remember hearing of the 1976 matter on TV, when I was 5 (yes, old enough to be most people's mothers or grandmother). It shocked more than one country. Thank you for your diligence, Mike, we all love you too - and your glasses too, for those of us here for ages they are part of your youness, please keep them!

There is a facility here that is for mentally insane AND disabled. So they are diagnosed with disabilities secondary to illness. Ive known a few who have worked there and they said it was rough. They had to be ready for practically anything at any time. I went to school with one girl who was so worried because her dad was a case worker who had just been assigned to a new patient. The patient had been transferred from another facility because he slit his last case workers throat. So this is criminally insane people that also lack the ability to understand their feelings an emotions and thus not able to stand trail,go to prison, or ever be in society ever again
My mother was a social worker and a whistle-blower in the 80s.
She worked the intellectually disabled. She was very well loved because she had breakthroughs with clients who know one else had been able to reach. Because she was a whistle-blower she was transferred to a hospital for the criminal insane. She could not take restraint training due to back problems. She was 5' 1" and weighed at tops 125 pounds. She was dealing with extremely dangerous men with the intellectual ages of 3 to maybe 7 years old. She was choked by one prisoner. Another through her across a room. She became disabled.
People really don't understand how dangerous these jobs are.
@@surrealistgirlx agreed. One of my old bosses mother was almost killed when she worked there way back in the day. I don't think people realize these places exist and that someone can be both criminally insane AND mentally disabled. The most you hear about are well calculated serial killers.

Also people who have schizophrenia or other mental health illnesses that require them to be institutionalized should not have access to any sort of weaponry, ever, including back several decades. It's something that should have been realized at the time at that type of facility and what their patients were being treated for... especially after the crimes they committed that caused them to be there in the first place.
Well, Thomas certainly proved his diagnosis as a psychopath! And he’s out living among the public somewhere. …shiver… 😱 Robert’s father may provide clues as to how Jr turned out so volatile, vengeful and violent; happy to know he finally crossed the wrong person. Hopefully, Robert Jr will also die in prison. Some people just can’t be saved or rehabilitated. Crazy how Thomas and Robert amassed such a cache of weapons and disguises while in that hospital. Also... I can't stress the importance of, when running a facility for psychopathological murderers, that pitchforks and axes be available for the inmates at all times. This policy is crucially pertinent to their -murderous- -rampage- -and- -escape- rehabilitation.
Carstairs State Hospital has quite a few stories to tell!! I grew up in a near by village, and we would hear them test the alarm siren every Thursday at 1pm! Was just normal to us.

I struggle as well, so I say this with love, but please get a support network going and get some more help. If a true crime video is saving your life you should probably seek out extra care!! It's great that Mike's videos help you. Talk to someone too, though. It does help. It may take some time. It may get worse before it gets better. But it absolutely can get better.
(Yes, I've been there and didn't think things could ever change either but they did. My view of life and myself has changed quite a bit. Took a while but things did change.)

My wife is a forensics nurse, and she deals with malingerers all the time. She deals with the most disgusting people, who are sometimes actually sick. I fear these stories...

@@pateicialane4740 it's no joke. She deals with the worst people you can imagine. They are the worst, most disgusting criminals you could think of. But 90% of them are actually sick and get an NGRI and still have to serve the time.
My dad works in a prison and same. Some of the sickos were let out during Covid too
