Mike taking the time to find that small clip of the girl on Idol is why he is my favorite true crime channel. 99% of other channels would not go that extra mile. Love the podcast too
It went viral (ish) around the time this story was breaking out in the news. I remember everyone wanting to know who these women were, how tf they ended up in North Korea (they didn’t) on TV, etc

I vaguely remember hearing about this incident when it happened but never knew the backstory about a phony prank TV show until now. This was fascinating! Thanks for another good one. 😊
One of the most chilling parts to me is that they explicitly came up with the "Got You!" prank not just as the method of delivery, but also as a message so that Kim Jong Nam would know EXACTLY who sent them and that he was a dead man. I can't imagine the absolute terror that went through him when he head those words.
Being Malaysian, I had no idea about the prank or the fact that those women were released. I was in shock when I heard about this case and even more shocked when it wasn’t reported as widely as it should have been. Thank you for giving me some clarity on what happened.
It was covered pretty heavily here in the USA. Although tbh probably not as much as it could have been seeing it was such an open act of espionage and an assassination that we just don't see in today's world.
Listening at 4:03, I actually think she had quite a nice singing voice. It's not a pop star voice, but over an acoustic guitar or solo piano she could've made decent indie pop or something with singing like that. I know that's very much *not* the most important part of this story, but as someone who despises those Idol shows and everything they stand for (including their extremely narrow definition of what a "good voice" is), I felt like I had to say something.
I thought she had a pretty voice too, but little to no training. She is too breathy and has no power behind her voice, something some lessons could help with.
Our village (Puurs-SA, Belgium) went through a horrible situation last week with a neighbor killing his two young children and wife, in a fire, because of a divorce... I just want to say that your stories can happen everywhere and anyday. Thank you for covering them. 🙏

Hi Mike! Super excited for the vidya, this case is fascinating. Also, if anyone was waiting for an update: 9 days after going missing, we discovered Eddie the cat was locked in the neighbors garage. The neighbors (who didn't know about Eddie going missing) went on vacation with him locked in their garage and by some miracle Eddie was still alive! Thank you guys for the vibes and prayers for his safe homecoming! Eddie the cat is happy, healthy and home.
Thank goodness he survived! That happened to my cat but just overnight. She still walks in to open garages, doors, cars, you name it. She went missing for 5 days one time and it turned out that a neighbor posted her pic on our neighborhood app & a woman down the street said it was her long lost cat! When I went to pick her up the woman said, that she couldn’t understand why her (my) cat wouldn’t let anyone touch it and hissed at her? 🤦🏽♀️.
One of my cats did this. The neighbours had not left yet, but were just about to when our other cat led us to the fence and i looked over and saw him in the neighbours garage window.
I always get on my neighbors about leaving their sheds open while mowing the lawn or doing things in the yard. I lost a cat that way years ago when he got into some couples summer houses garage and they left for weeks. He must have ran in while they were packing the car. My neighbors know I have many outdoor cats and they usually close the doors right after or check to make sure nobody got in. I'm glad you got him back thank god.
I heard he had a reputation as being a chill dude considering his family and home but hearing about how he wanted to take his kid to Disney World in Japan makes me feel morose about the whole thing.
I'm thrilled that Mike made it to TWO MILLION subscribers! Let's keep that hype train going but please do not run yourself into the ground because "we love you" (well...really, really like you and what you do). He makes these horrific true crime stories digestible and I can binge watch them without having too many nightmares. Unfortunately, that means that Mike has all of the nightmares for us because he sees so much more than he presents. Bless his heart for protecting our psyches.

Rotten Mango did a video on this topic ~a week ago so it's still quite new, might want to give that one a watch too if you're wholly interested. It's about an hour and a half long so there's definitely a bit more things talked about so some stuff you may not have heard here.
@@CuidightheachODuinn I have tried her once but found it long winded. I will try it again. I like the topics she does but all of them seem to be hour or 90 min. Lol 😂 She has to be well researched, I am sure- thanks!
I knew this only as a news story. Come and gone. But Mike, you’re such an intelligent storyteller, circling around the subject from outside to inside for total immersion. So fulfilling!
Same, I knew about this but there are many important details I didn’t know about. I now think, based on the training the women went through, the plan was for him to die quietly and people think it was a heart attack, and the women to continue to exist as a possible unwitting assassination team. But the toxin took a little longer than they thought and he made a bigger commotion than they thought.
This is the wildest assassin story for sure. If you wrote and submitted a screenplay of this plot - I would expect it to be laughed at and dismissed as “way too implausible “. Truth is always stranger than fiction, which thankfully, is what keeps our dear Mikey in business! 😳Great job this week, very cool choices for your latest episodes and the longer format was a real treat. 😊
Love this! Traditionally, Bears were revered in Korean culture. Korean origin myth is that Korean people came from a bear'turned beautiful woman and the sky god´s son who descended to earth under a sandalwood tree. Their son was the famous first King of one of the main tribes of Korea. (I almost completed a minor in Korean studies.)
Bears are not revered in Korean culture lol what nonsense. Its like saying the lion and unicorn are revered in British culture. Koreans couldnt care less about bears apart from bear bile farms. Ive lived in Korea for 22 years and am married to a Korean.
@@michaelkennedy3372 Also, I added traditionally b/c that is what I mean, not that modern all Koreans follow the old traditions. Your perspective doesn't change the fact that the most common Korean origin myth being about a bear turning into a woman and birthing the chosun dynasty. 🙄
You have hit new heights with this one! You brought in some rather complex political soap opera complications and conspiracies and made it riveting. Well done Mike.
I wasn’t sure what exactly happened in this case, so I’m really glad you’re doing a video on it. Also, I can’t imagine how freaked out the girls must have been when they realized what happened, and who he actually was. I would be terrified. I’m just starting the video, so I don’t know if they really were clueless or not, but man I would freak!
No way you actually think they weren’t in on it?! Like this was as premeditated as they could come, no diss towards you but anyone would have to be naive to think otherwise.
@erickiyoshiphillips2323 the one girl had the catalyst on her hands with baby oil. Her washing her hands makes sense without being sinister. The other girl could've used the toilet and washed her hands like we're all told to after using the toilet. What the girls did isn't necessarily suspect.
@@erickiyoshiphillips2323 Not really, they had practised with baby oil and would have washed that off straight away, this stuff must have had a similar texture.
@@chadbear8759 Really? Learning to read is nonsense? Learning to write is nonsense? Learning how to add, subtract, divide, multiply? How to research? How to create? how to socialise? How to work as part of a group? How to try and try again until you get it is nonsense?
Mike is wrong about North Korea and our allies not having sanctions on them for why they have famines and stuff. That is misinfo and propaganda. There is an active trade embargo on them. Kinda puts things into perspective, huh?
Do you watch Rotten Mango? She just covered this and does SO much Korean dark history every week (and other Asian history with the help of researchers and translators)
I appreciate that you did this one because I remember when it happened and everyone was saying that the girls MUST have been guilty because there was no proof they thought it was a game and the way they acted was guilty. That's all you heard was how guilty they obviously were (even on the news). This was the first time I've heard that they did multiple test runs and were being treated like they were already on a show.
You should do a video about Shane "suga" Valentine of Las Vegas. Double homicide suspect, one of the victims mother was a judge in Las Vegas, she went to the las vegas metropolitan police before the murder and claimed that Shane ran an underage prostitution ring. The police started investigating her, then her daughter was gunned down in her apartment, execution style. The mother "committed suicide" then a second mother who made the same claims to the police "committed suicide" it's a crazy story and i think your research will be better than mine.
Holy 💩. Please don't get Mike accidentally unalived please. 😆 It would be interesting for a channel to focus just on all the sus cases that have been ruled suicides, whether that was changed later or not. Debbie Collins, Nancy Shafer and her husband, the young boy that was found unalived in his back yard with his hands bound... I know there's a ton of these cases, I'm just not good with remembering all the names.
The fact that the two women didn’t come in contact with each other after the attack, and that the second woman managed to wash her hands without touching her own face or becoming affected herself as she would have both chemicals on her hands makes me think that it was a complete set up and that they did know what they were doing. It’s all just too convenient and hard to believe in my opinion
yeah I keep wondering why the second woman wasn’t effected by the poison as both would’ve been on her hands ? Maybe gloves but nothing indicates she was.
The one who supposedly thought it was baby oil, I can understand going to wash her hand pretty quick afterward. But the girl who said she thought it was just a spray bottle of water? Why wash that off so quickly? The fact that they BOTH did it is enough for me to have a bit of pause. They could have known that it would have some extra side effect, but maybe not death. That's my most charitable take. I still don't think they should have been put to death. Too much doubt.
Apparently they were told it would stain their clothes so were quick to want to wash it off their hands. Other reports say they each had different components on their hands, not a spray bottle so they both went to wash their hands.
When I got accepted into Grad school I was so excited, but stopped dead and I asked my husband how the hell I got in?!?! I was 34 and all these younger people got passed up, surely they were smarter! I didn't think I was that smart? He told me I am obviously above average to get into this competitive program. Fast forward to 3 years later and I had to do something and it reminded me that even if I was of average intelligence, half of the people are smarter in both common sense and book smarts and half are NOT. So these 2 ladies could most certainly be that naive and just not with the program. Wanting to be famous and not being able to recognize the game that is being run on them. Being told to wash it off so it doesn't stain would work.
Mike, I love that you covered this case and also gave a mini history lesson on North Korea! As a Korean, I think N/S Korea is one of the most interesting yet misinformed conflicts in history. AS lot of people are ignorant as to what happened to Korea and are just aware that North Korea is a joke. There's so much history on why things got so fucked up.
@@faithgoga3983let’s put it this way-don’t blindly trust Western countries narrative on things. We have incentive to slander countries who don’t represent the United States best interests (ie Russia, Syria, North Korea etc.)
Why they got messed up doesn’t mean they should keep being so messed up, but I don’t understand the entire history and it definitely helps to know more about something before having a solid opinion. However, for what we do know, it’s a pretty messed up place.
One of these days, Mike's going to surprise us with a story where everything turns out fine for everyone and there was just a simple misunderstanding. 🤭

As someone else said, you're so consistent with your uploads, which is the most consistent thing I've got going on (besides paying my bills, I guess😂). Although it's always stories that are dark and tragic, the way you tell these is like a comfort show, like a more murder-y version of The Office. Reliable and respectful, yet always finding a way to slip some humor into every video at the appropriate time. You've mastered the art of speaking through the camera, to your audience, in a way that makes it seem like we are sitting in a room together, listening to you tell these stories in a way that seems to come so naturally to you. I hope you love doing this as much as your audience loves watching, because you've got a gift for storytelling. Take care of yourself, because I love ya.

I like how you do further research and include things like the Korean War. I know others have done this story but they didn't include all the extra information. Probably because they didn't think it was relevant but I do.
I thought I thought I knew all the details of the case, but Mike found a couple significant ones I didn’t know: The length of time training the girls, and that the CIA was involved with Kim Ul- Nam or whatever his name is. Mike delivers depth of research in each story. Yes, he is a machine!

Great video and looking forward to the next one already!! Hope your week is a great one, Mike !! Cheers all 🍻
This hits home - the poisonings of Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia happened ten minutes walk from where I'm typing this now. The CCTV footage you showed is Bridge Street in Salisbury, and Salisbury railway station, both about 15 minutes walk from my home. We've just had an inquest; because the two Russian agents disposed of the Novichok bottle so carelessly, they intentionally endangered more lives than just the Skripals. The Skripals survived, but Dawn Sturgess did not. Ultimately, Putin - another meglomaniac - is to blame.
Considering how he somehow gets out two a week, your odds are pretty good of that happening hahaha, it's not like reading berserk and get one chapter a year. Now when that happens with RLMs best of the worst, thats a happy rare occasion

May pause to edit & add to this 😊 Im glad you covered this case! North korea facinates me, its insane over there. My late husband, my 1 yr old and myself lived in south korea feom 93 to 94. Husband was military and we were stationed at a tiny post about 25 km from the dmz. We were on alert all the time but tbh, the news reported in the US made it seem way worse than it was. I'm at 1:56 and instantly was like, "Whoa Kim Jong Nam was assassinated in Kuala Lumpur Airport under the guise of a reality TV show prank?!?" Wild I can recognize the story already and had no clue that's how they got those women to do it so casually!!
@@missolesoul Kim Jong Nam did not have money nor was he famous so idk what you're talking about lol. No one talks about the fame or money of the Kim Dynasty, no one knows what they even have or do, so that's not even accurate to the larger subject. Assassinations and espionage are what interest people. The Hermit Kingdom fascinates people. The brazen nature of the crime and the substance are insanely unique and scary. That's why people know about it. My point was that for how publicized the case was, the findings on motive did not make as big a splash, so they didn't get the same level of coverage. This is generally a fact. Details don't lead. If anything that is a criticism of exploitation news media. I personally do find that detail interesting though and I've read about not only this but other nerve agent assassinations/attempts, and was surprised such an intriguing detail isn't more widely discussed.

@@kbm2055Is she just parroting Mike? Because he was talking about American reality TV there and not obscure Malaysian prank shows. I was watching this story thinking, "How sad, Jong Nam was assassinated just because he's Jong Un's brother" until I realized that Jong Un was behind it?! And I thought my family was bad.
i'm confused as to how these ladies thought they were performing for a prank reality show, when they didn't have any type of film crew following them through the airport; how did they think this "prank" was going to be recorded? why did they have zero interaction with kim jong nam after their disturbing "prank" was performed?
RottenMango actually covers this in her very long video (that focuses a lot on the girls). There was a fake “hidden” crew that they had been told was there/seen at past times. Bigger question is why they didn’t think to watch the videos on youtube later to be sure it was happening.
They were paid to do a prank under the assumption it would be "pitched" for a show. They were hesitant at first. Good thing they washed their hands or they'd face the same fate. I believe they were also expected to die so they couldn't explain later how this all played out.
Wouldn’t you think that only the second girl who smeared it on him would be at risk, since he explained they’re only toxic when combined with one another. The perfume spray wouldn’t have been deadly to the first girl unless she went and touched the hand smearing girl. Seems like 2nd girl took a much bigger risk(unknowingly). This whole thing is insane.
First, I can't believe that this happened 6 tears ago - I though it happened approx. 2019, 2020 (time sure does fly). Second, I never heard the backstory of these two "patsy's" being deceived into assassinating him. This is insane! They found two gullible women (who already were having a tough life) and tricked them with dreams of fame. This is truly reminiscent of Game Of Thrones and the Cersei Lannister reference was perfect! Thank you Mike! Love ya! 🥰
I’d heard about this, but I haven’t heard any of the details, going to enjoy this one for sure. Edit: wow! I feel so bad for the 2 girls. That sucks. Also for Kim Jong Nam. No need to kill him.

I agree, I thought it had potential.
I thought she had a pretty voice too, but little to no training. She is too breathy and has no power behind her voice, something some lessons could help with.

💯
I always get on my neighbors about leaving their sheds open while mowing the lawn or doing things in the yard. I lost a cat that way years ago when he got into some couples summer houses garage and they left for weeks. He must have ran in while they were packing the car. My neighbors know I have many outdoor cats and they usually close the doors right after or check to make sure nobody got in. I'm glad you got him back thank god.

Been watching That Chapter for years now, never commented, figured I should! Thanks Mike for your content, nobody does their videos quite like yours.

Yes, way too implausible. Now excuse me while I watch the latest John Wick installment...
This was so interesting, I hadn't realized just how intricate and long played the whole plot was. Awesome piece Mikey.
Interesting, thanks
Bears are not revered in Korean culture lol what nonsense. Its like saying the lion and unicorn are revered in British culture. Koreans couldnt care less about bears apart from bear bile farms. Ive lived in Korea for 22 years and am married to a Korean.

They were awfully naive and gullible, though
They had to know if they went snd washed their hands right after.

Right?! I was thinking that it ONLY makes sense if the girls didn’t know what they were up to…
You should do a video about Shane "suga" Valentine of Las Vegas.
It would be interesting for a channel to focus just on all the sus cases that have been ruled suicides, whether that was changed later or not. Debbie Collins, Nancy Shafer and her husband, the young boy that was found unalived in his back yard with his hands bound... I know there's a ton of these cases, I'm just not good with remembering all the names.
Definitely gotta look into this!!
I recall when this happened. It was truly horrible. Thank you, Mike, for thorough coverage of this story.
@@perfectly_imperfecwhat did you have to do

RIGHT!? it was intentional… bc dude wanted to get rid of his brother. So freaking strange.
Not true, I learned this first on American TV. It was more interesting as Mike tells it but it was just as factual.
@@ladyedith99akanancy This story was true. Your correct. A lot of these shows are scripted.
Excellent point/ observation.
Dunno why you only get the few thumbs up tho... bit odd.
Anyway, well spotted.
@@tcookie7476fr... how she didn’t die is quite the little curiosity .
Yay 🎉 looking forward to this every week
Thank you so much for watching!
You could put out pretty much anything and I'd still watch it. Love you, Mike!
A new upload from Mike will certainly make my doing dishes go by much easier. Thank youuuuu ❤❤❤❤
Love ya! 🥰
....?. Huh?

This is all news to me. What a fascinating story, and wonderfully told by Mike.
I’d heard about this, but I haven’t heard any of the details, going to enjoy this one for sure.
Edit: wow! I feel so bad for the 2 girls. That sucks. Also for Kim Jong Nam. No need to kill him.
