    Damn I love it when you get creative, it's a lot different than the usual solutions. In my case, I made an expanding mandrel and purchased a 60 tooth change gear to fit... Think of all the useful factors you can get from 60... Especially since I can drive my south bend gears with a 6 TPI acme screw like a worm...

    • @WinkysWorkshop
      @WinkysWorkshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! I also made an expanding mandrel with a 100 tooth saw for making dials for the lathe and an indexing wheel that has many combinations. However, I think in most cases a 48 tooth gear would be very adequate. That covers 2,3,4,6,8 etc.

      Well it all started when I was 4 years old.... Ha, just kidding but thanks for the great comment. I've been into woodworking all my life but always had basic metal working tools minus a lathe and mill. I retired just over a year ago but ran (or worked on) a web offset printing press most my life. Then after I designed a few creative cures for ongoing problems on the presses they gave a job trouble shooting press problems. It fit my natural abilities perfectly. I ended up designing at least 100 machine improvements, learning some CAD and a lot about machine work. I actually bought my lathe so that I could fabricate parts at home. We had a few top notch machinist at work and I learned a lot from them but sometimes they didn't have time to work on my less pressing projects... you know, there was always an emergency press break down that took priority.

    If you only want three holes at 120 degrees you can use the jaws on the three jaw chuck, use a short piece of steel and turn the chuck until it jams between the lathe bed and the chuck jaw ,repeat for the other two jaws. do the same for 90degrees with a 4jaw chuck.

  • @courierdog1941
    @courierdog1941 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    When I saw the protractor app on the phone, it struck me that the app could be superior to the digital angle finder which has a single purpose. By having a metal clamp holder for the smartphone could have many more uses especially if the clamp is designed around Machinists tasks and other measurement challenges.
    My other thought is the Lathe Indexer. why not an index wheel that is about 2 or three feet in diameter.
    The degree of additional accuracy is immense. I read some where but for the life of me I cannot remember where. The English used a similar method but used an index wheel mounted horizontal driving gears to provide an accuracy level approaching todays optical standards. There is a ton of information in the early Victorian machinist related books. This is the first documented report of the Tangential Lathe tool which looks very similar to the Eccentric Engineering Diamond Tool Holder.

I think you can still find the 2017 version free on the internet to download... might be worth trying to find. I think it's a little easier than other CAD although I've never seen a truly easy cad program.

      When I learned mechanical drafting in the 1940s in Junior High School, we had T-squares and triangles, and we drew little mutilated blocks on eight-and-a-half by 11 sheets of paper.
      When I went to Texas A&M University in 1961 the College of Engineering used VEMCO, parallel arm drafting machines with a protractor head. The architecture Department used a long parallel bar on Big D size sheets.
      When I graduated with a terminal degree in industrial education and technology in 1968 there were no computers and therefore no CAD drawing and all of the shop work was done with careful measurement, sketches and the touch of the Master's Hands on the controls.
      In 2001 when I did mentoring for a Magnet High School in Amarillo Texas, I had contact with pre-engineering students who were enrolled in a program called Project Lead the Way which I think was a national initiative at that time. I had students in their senior year for an internship experience after they had completed three years which included Autodesk Inventor.
      I quickly found out that I had to go to the local community college and take a night class in auto desk I
      2010 when
      Over the next 10 years, I continued to use the annual upgrades in the inventor series until Autodesk decided to eliminate the free version to educators and I was forced to consider Fusion 360 for a fee!
      By that time I had hundreds of inventor digital part drawings, assemblies, STL's and comfortable experiences that I could no longer access. I had experimented with SketchUp previously but never really considered moving away from my comfort zone within INVENTOR.
      Now that I have really retired and have time I have tried to start over again with everything from Tinker cad, Vcarve, Fusion 360, the new and improved Trimble SketchUp, leading to dissatisfaction and frustration. I guess at age 86 I'm too old to start over.
      I enjoy watching your program following your threads and watching the touch of the master Which is far better than I ever was when I taught beginning machine shop.
      Thanks for the prompt reply I have a Winkie's shortcut icon on my desktop and frequently click on it for a relaxing hour or so.
      I'm frequently reminded of the dream sequence in George C Scott's portrayal of Patton in the movie of the same name. Patton is sleeping in an armchair with a copy of Rommel's book - Desert Tank Warfare - Where a Panoramic widescreen full of burned out German tanks lie smoldering in the heat. Scott utters the line attributed to his character," Rummel, you SOB, I Read Your Book."
      As an honest expression of praise- Winky, We watch your TH-cam channel with great admiration.

      @@wallacejohnston9059 Wallace, all I can say is Wow! Thank you so much for your great comment and appreciation. I think you are giving me far too much credit. I learned Sketchup and still struggle with it (although I do successfully utilize it). I tried auto cad and solid works and was totally lost. I have zero formal education and my abilities in math are somewhat limited. Where I excel is creativity. I can visualize anything machinal and understand the very basic math and physics needed. Beyond that Google is my best friend. Ha. Google is kind of like CAD in a funny way. It give solutions. I will admit that creativity is just is important as knowledge. When somebody has both you get a super star. Google and cad help me a lot :o)

      @@wallacejohnston9059 Movie star! Haha... you're funny. Honestly, I'm in a continuous state mild shock that my videos are so popular. I do think my videos with a few exceptions have improved over the years as I learn what I'm doing with machine work and video editing. Plus thanks to comments from people like you my self confidence gets a little boost. I Grew up in near Seattle and moved to Kentucky when I was 22 years old. I've worked in printing all my life it seems. I worked 39 yrs for the web offset plant here in KY before I retired 5 yrs ago. We printed high volume magazines. Most the presses (14 of them) took up the space of a standard basket ball court although a bit longer. Intimidating, complicated and fascinating at the same time. I worked on of ran a press most my career but the last 15 years I had a job as a trouble shooter for problem areas of the machines... or at least that is the way is started. It morphed into a lot of significant equipment redesign. For the most part I loved and it was very rewarding. To redesign a machine and watch it function much better was amazing. I was "full on" for about 10 or 12 years and then I kind of hit a wall. All my answers ran out. I was so glad to retire!!! Anyway... One of the supervisors over maintenance started calling me Winky because it sounded like part of my last name. I can hear him saying it now.... Somebody would "Josh, the stacker is not working right" and Josh would say, "Go get Winky!" So I did an engineers job without the pay. Of course in many way I was not qualified as an engineer but the fact remains, I fixed hundred of problems the engineers could not or would not fix.

    Thats a great idea indeed. Few months back I noticed I could lockup my logan lathe with the back gears (carefully) to give me 3 and 6 divisions, possibly more. Also I needed to index 6 sides on a shaper project. So I made a wooden hex ring for the part to set in to allow indexing th-cam.com/video/63h2vlQVAr8/w-d-xo.html worked like a champ on that job. Its amazing how often I find wood can assist in metal working projects, without the cost/time of messing with metal scraps

    Hello Winky mate..
    I bought a drill combo from VEVOR. I'm waiting on them to arrive now but I'm looking forward to seeing how they do bcos it was a great deal for 20V Brushless Drill and Impact driver combi set.. They should be perfect enough for my needs and were only 95 euros..
    I wanted to ask u if u would ask Vevor to let u do some more reviews on their tools bcos I'm defo interested in their Belt/Disc sander/grinder 375W machine for 132.99 euros..
    I want to know how decent it is before buying it but I guess for that price u cannot go wrong and it would or should be perfect for my small shop.. U obviously have better tools that this in ur shop my bro but It would be cool to see what u actually think of it..
    Enjoying watching the videos tonight before I get back at it again tomorrow and carry on building out my little shop for a buindle of storage.
    I'm at the mercy of the weather here bcos it likes to rain when u least expect it man.. LOL
    Irish weather is a nightmare esp on ur day off when u need to cut 8X4 sheet goods outside in the yard.. haha!
    Take care mate and take it easy..

    • @WinkysWorkshop
      @WinkysWorkshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I feel a little more comfortable with my Logan and in a few respects it's easier to use but I think the south bend is a more solid lathe. Shifting between functions on the carriage and threading speed are not as easy as the Logan but I can take off twice as much with the SB. I think if I had to make a choice I'd take the SB. Oh... I can get a slightly better finish on the Logan too... Ball bearing vs sleeve I suspect.
