    Number one tip is to put it somewhere out of sight. I keep it in the garage when not running and pull it out only when running and I stay close by. You only need to run it for an hour every four hours or so to keep refrigerators cool. We had our power go out a few weeks ago. Makes for long days even if prepared. Going to get an automatic whole house generator for our new place in Florida.

    This is a really good video. The tips on how to prove it to law enforcement is on point. I’m a police officer and if working a theft case and the victim had the serial number, their name engraved on it and a gps locator, that would make for such a simple case to prosecute or at least return the generator. A lot of times people never write down or photograph their belonging’s serial numbers so don’t be those people and record your serial numbers!!!

      I HAD a TroyBilt 5550/8550 cart generator which did fine backfeeding into the dryer outlet -(use extreme caution - do at your own risk), but, not being physically able to haul it out for backup power, I got a Westinghouse Igen2500, (~50 lbs.), and reduced my power requirements to only that of a 5K window ac and regular size home refer and a handful of led type home light bulbs. So, I would recommend to you to look at this type of generator - INVERTER - to provide QUIET and fuel efficient power. Home Depot 599 bucks will do it..

    Mine is in my car port in the back of my house. I moved my old cargo van, put the generator back there then parked the cargo van blocking the entrance enough so that a person can squeeze in, but nothing wider. If a thief (or two, since my generator weighs 120 pounds and I didn't put the wheels on it!) wants to try to lift that generator up and over my cargo van, they can have it!

      Since this video was made, technology has advanced and there are now better ways to track valuables. For example, you could use a Samsung Galaxy Air tracker or an Apple AirTag. These devices are about the size of a quarter and use Bluetooth to track your belongings. Plus they only cost about 25 bucks! You can put the tag in a place so that heat will not be a problem on the generator. Mike

    Cables and locks can be cut in seconds. The best way I have found to secure things is to pour a concrete pad with bolts sticking up just long enough to put nuts on, either welded or not accessible. That's basically how whole house generators are secured. Don't forget the cameras and lights.

  • @dianevitale1214

    Hi again Mike. Have a few questions about the Litom solar lights. Need your candid opinion. #1-Main concern is the life of the solar light. On Amazon, some comments say 3-4 months, some 2 yrs, etc. I know they come with warranty of 18 months, but I hate having the hassle of contacting seller, etc etc. 3-4 months life expectancy would be a big disappointment. #2- Live in the rural. Outside house at nite very dark. Tonight, got out of car about breaking my neck tripping on a fallen branch. Park pretty close to back entrance of my house. On Amazon, someone said the solar light is equivalent to a 40w bulb. hmmm Don't think that would help me seeing where I am stepping in the dark from car to house. Sounds more like an accent light?. Whatcha think?? Sorry for length, but sure would like a solar, rather than a higher electricity bill on my small, retired income.

      I'm flying by the seat of my pants here.
      First I'll make cut outs for several rainproof vents, all around the box. In addition I'll have a 1150 cfm fan with metal top to remove heat. This can be accomplished with a reciprocating saw using the Diablo blades from HD. Awesome blades.
      That should take care of the heat. I'll also be lining the inside with automotive sound deadening/dampening materials. On the bottom I'll have anti-vibration mat that's also heat resistant to 212° and chemical resistant to further isolate noise.
      Next I'll install a thermostat along with a remote start option.
      This should be a fun solid 4 hour job if everything goes according to plan.
      Options include hooking up out door waterproof outlets with the plastic cover to the outside of the box so I don't have to open it to plug into the generator. It's there on the outside.
      Oh! I just remembered to ground this to be safe. 4' copper pole into the ground etc..
      Let me know if I missed anything. This box should quiet down the already quiet Honda EU3000IS. ☺️

    Question....what added benefit is there to etch your initials on the unit ...IF.... you take pics of the model / serial number and keep purchase paperwork of the same? Serious question.

    • @Getmytips
      @Getmytips  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wil, if you happen to find the unit and there is a dispute as to ownership, you can say to the law enforcement official why don't we just tip it over and see if my initials are there. The photograph of the model and serial number may not be available and it would not carry as much weight to demonstrate ownership as your initials etched underneath and the fact that you knew that they were there. Mike

    • @TheWilferch
      @TheWilferch 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would think you offering up serial and model numbers ahead of anyone asking your proof would be good-to-go. We don't etch our cars or guns and rely on serial numbers for these things....combined with backup paper documentation/proof of purchase with same.....but OK... I get your point. Just happen not to fully agree. Makes your own resale of these things a bit problematic too......

      Apparently the one demonstrated in the video is no longer available. However, they now have new ones that don't require you to purchase a cellular card. Here is the link to Amazon if you want to check them out, Mike

    is there a GPS unit that DOESN'T require a simple card? one you don't have to mk monthly payments. that's the one thing that stops me from purchasing one

    • @Getmytips
      @Getmytips  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      To my knowledge no. And that's because the only way to send a signal back to you is to use the cellular network. It's very inexpensive though. If anyone knows of a GPS tracking system that operates without using a card for a cellular network, they can let us both know here. Mike

    • @TauCu
      @TauCu 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unless it has a transmitter that is powerful, and connects over some RF
      receiver, No. as a GPS sat only transmits data, These devices work out
      the location by knowing where the sats are, and comparing the time it
      takes for the signals to reach the device. Thus it can make a somewhat
      precise estimation of the location of itself, This works fine and all,
      But as for telling you the location of it, It needs a helping hand to
      send that data to you. And then you have the simple RF finders, they
      just emit a pulse every now and again, You can find it using a simple
      antenna and decoder.
