  • Organizing your Capture One catalog of photos is probably one of those less exciting tasks that many of us don’t devote time to.
    A well organized photo library is a delight, as it simply means you can locate that elusive photo quickly and easily, and know that your photos are safe, and most importantly backed up.

    This was wonderful and extremely helpful. One suggestion: It would be nice if you can make a index so one can jump quickly to the desired topic instead of scrolling back to find a particular one. Thanks for this webinar.

    About a year ago I imported my Lightroom Cat witch has over 325K files into Capture 12. The catalog has raw/jpegs files from 2004. When I imported everything into a Capture One Catalog (350 Gig currently) 99% of 15 years of keywords showed up correctly in the correct hierarchy, xmp files and LR Collections transferred. The catalog takes about 2 1/2 minutes to open, it sits on the main boot drive (SSD) on my maxed our iMac (i7, 2TB, SSD, 32 gig ram)and the images sit on an external G-Tech 10 TB USB-C drive.

    Hey guys, at 18:20 in [Image Date] the predefined format yyyy-MM-dd without HH.mm.ss is still missing. This would offer the opportunity to import to a folder structure sorted by date as well as having a correct alphanumerical sort order. The available one with the two digit year is not sufficient. Just remember the year 2000 "bug" 😆.

    I just purchased Capture One. This was a very helpful tutorial. Thanks so much.
    One question I have about importing images.... In the past, I've been somewhat haphazard about adding keywords in programs like Lightroom or Luminar etc. I'd like to start with a clean slate in Capture One and use a consistent set of keywords as outlined in this tutorial. Is there a way to import images into Capture One's catalog but NOT import any keywords that might have been added in other image editing programs? That way I could assign a fresh set of consistent keywords. Thanks in advance for your help.

    I wanted to rearrange my folder structure somewhat, and moved a bunch of photos within a session to another location within C1 tree structure. The files are moved, but C1 looses track of them. Also, if I want to re-import them, I don't get the option "Current Location" under Destination - only Capture, Session and Selected folder. It does, however, indicate that all the files are duplicates (Windows10, C1 20)

    Hi David, love your webinars but i want a different workflow which you will probably think is crazy.
    So here’s where I need some help please.
    Import sd card Raw files to hard drive desktop folder, no problem.
    Import contents of folder to c1,
    Process all images in C1, save them as Raw originals and variants, Export as Tiffs to hard drive folder, then open in photoshop.
    Save all finished Tiffs.
    Now I have my original Raws, my variants and processed Tiffs in one folder with separate sub folders.
    Name this primary folder as Portrait of John Smith, date etc.
    This completed folder will now be moved to multiple external disks for security.
    Thats me done, don’t need these images on my hard drive or in the catalog.
    Can I simply delete this catalog or all the image links in the catalog and start again with a new Portrait subject.
    Sorry for long message but I am confused being totally new to C1, I am practising with the Free express version before deciding on the full blown Capture suite., Many thanks.

    In LR you have the paint spray can to add keywords. I have several thousand images many have key words from when I used light room, but there are many with out key words. I shoot street, and sometimes have many different images on a memory card that would require different keywords. In LR I just used the spray can of paint to move around a download. The only thing I do not like about CaptureOne is the way how Library tool works. I can not browse trough my catalogue like in explorer but have to select specific folder to see pictures. I can not apply filters when selected parent folder but have to select All Images option at Catalogue Collection. When I select multi picture view on my center window (left is toolbar, right is thumbview preview) I can not scroll trough the selected pictures becouse at the bottom right there is message "and XX more...". I have to hide that window and extent right window to select and manipulate bunch of image of selected folder.
    Smart folders are complicated. Project/groups are not logical. There is no simple way to make smart album to just point on parent folder of your desired pictures.
    I like sessions and how they works. I like how they sense default folders and changes I made to them. With catalogues is much harder. There is no sensing. Update folder location does not work nice. Sync folders do not work at all.

    Database question. My Capture One Catalog is 40GB. Is there a way to reduce this size or allocate the previews to an external drive? I know part of this is that Smart Previews are built into the database, but can this be controlled? I don't need preview to every single image I've ever taken.

    • @markwith140
      @markwith140 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are lucky, mine is around 120gb. I like the work flow of Capture One from an editing perspective, it produces nice pictures, it is a crying shame that it uses catalogues, it make it bloated, hard work to manage and difficult to work with other applications (with a need to synchronise if I create in another application). Capture One would be perfect if it used side car files rather than catalogues.

    • @markwith140
      @markwith140 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am seeing the light...I have been looking at Sessions as a better way to work (for me). Being new to Capture One my understanding of all the features is not quite there yet. After several days hard drive thrashing while Capture One created the previews (and the 75gb catalogue), I see that Sessions use sidecar files and store the edits in a folder that sits in the image folder. I am hoping that sessions support the way I work a little better than catalogues. I have other applications that work in this method and I have not missed catalogueing at all, so suspect I will bin the use of catalogues in Capture One if sessions work as I think they do. I don't use collections so no great loss as far as I am concerned.

    • @martintolley9234
      @martintolley9234 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@markwith140 I'm a new convert to C1 and I think sessions suit me better for shooting projects - one session for each project. And the session folder seems to be self-contained. All the files, all the edits and (if you want to keep it just in case , - all the rubbish) Backup seems to just be a simple - drag the whole session folder to another drive. I'm keeping a catalogue for personal stuff, family photos, vacation snaps where a sort of structure makes sense.

    • @markwith140
      @markwith140 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@martintolley9234 yes, I like the portability of sessions. Although I think I have some legacy issues around folder structure to contend with as lightroom imported files in folder structures with dates and Capture One does not look at sun-folders (Unfortunately). There have been some comments in other forums about Capture One's inability to look at sub-folders, it would be useful, both in catalogues and sessions, if a top level folder select would show all images in all folders sitting below. Or at least give the option to do this so existing long time users are not impacted.

    • @CaptureOne
      @CaptureOne  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ariel,
      The previews must stay in the catalog database I am afraid. You can reduce the size of the previews in the Preferences, but then performance may suffer.

  • @bioliv1

    Is it possible to first store RAW-files on a folder on the hard-drive of the PC, then to edit the images in a Catalog, then later to export the RAW-files to an external harddisk, and still keep on editing the RAW-files from that external harddisk from the Catalog on your PC? Or will the images on that external harddisk then be OFF-LINE, as you moved them from a folder on your laptop, to an external harddisk?

    • @MikeNelsonPedde
      @MikeNelsonPedde 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This may be inherently obvious (so forgive me if it is),, but digital images are not individual things, like prints. A digital image is a collection of INFORMATION. If you move your images to an external drive (from within Capture One!) and the drive is still connected, then you can still edit your images with no problem. If you disconnect the drive then the images will be considered 'Offline'. What that means is that C1 will display the .jpg smart preview you created (remember to set the preview size in Preferences to your screen size) and is stored within the catalogue but the bulk of the information about that image isn't available to the C1 program. You can do culling, keywording, some editing, etc. but if you want to add a Luma Range to a layer for example, export the image using a Process Recipe or any sort of heavy lifting you're going to have to provide all the information C1 needs to do so by reconnecting the drive.

    • @bioliv1
      @bioliv1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MikeNelsonPedde No, I don't want to store the RAW-files within Capture One, I want to store them on a folder of its own, first on my laptop for editing them fast, and later when my laptop is full, to move them to a slower, external harddisk for storage. Then, when I later find an image in my preview of my Catalog, and I want to access the RAW-file, is there a way to reconnect the preview with the RAW-file on that new external harddisk?

    • @MikeNelsonPedde
      @MikeNelsonPedde 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bioliv1 You don't store files Within C1. If you're working with a catalogue and you import your images to C1 all you're doing is creating a pointer within the C1 database that says, "This file is here". Here can be anywhere - internal hard drive, external hard drive, thumb drive, NAS (possible but slow to access), etc.
      If you don't want the images to be referenced in one Capture One catalogue, you have two other choices. One is to work with Sessions. A session is like a mini-database for each project you undertake. You can store the session database/folders and images in the same place, whether it be internal or external.
      The second option is possible but easy to mess up. Each digital image has two parts. Actually in the camera it has one, but we'll get to that. There's the information related to the image itself - the grid cell of light captured by each sensel on the camera sensor, and then there's the information captured About the image: date/time, camera make/model/serial number, on and on. When you use a raw converter like C1 it reads that information and anything else you add (copyright, photographer's name and address, star ratings and so on) and stores it in what's called a sidecar file. For Most raw files this is a separate file with an .xmp extension. For DNG files (as well as rendered files like jpg, tif, png) this metadata - information About the image - is stored within the image file itself.
      Now with programs like Lr and C1 any processing changes, etc. aren't made to the image itself. Rather the program writes out a list of instructions: set white balance to 5874K, increase exposure 0.3 EV and so on. When you export the image it takes the original image information, adds the processing steps and creates a new file. This is why there's no Save option in raw converters. By default, this list of instructions is stored within the program's database. You Can tell it to also write this list of instructions to the .xmp file, either manually or automatically.
      If you were to write the metadata to the file, remove the image from the Capture One catalogue and re-import it, on import C1 will read the .xmp information and add the list of instructions back to the preview. HOWEVER: If you remove the image from the database and somehow separate the image data from the metadata or have another program overwrite the metadata then boom. It's gone. You'll have to resuurect it from the backup you (thankfully) remembered to make.
      The bottom line, though is that even if you write the metadata to the.xmp file, remove the image from the C1 catalogue and store the image on an external drive, in order to view or do anything with that image in C1 in the future you're going to need to have it associated with a Capture One database - either a catalogue or within a session folder.
      Does that make sense?

      I'm old school so I sort my images by camera/year/month. Yes, I recognize all that metadata is within the file, but anyway. I only keep current-year images on my internal drive. So, at the beginning of 2020 for example I (from within Capture One) move all of my 2019 images to an external drive. My internal drive images and my external drive images are backed up to a second external drive. All of the images are associated with the Capture One catalogue. If the external drive is disconnected I can still see the smart previews of the older images. If I want to print/export or do heavy editing to an older image I just reconnect the external drive, Capture One says, "Oh, there you are!!" and continues on happily. 🙂

      Hi Oyvind,
      As shown in the webinar, you can simply move them from internal to external, whenever you choose.

    Hello; how is capture one pro different from Express... Why should I upgrade... I am not a professional photographer but use an XT3?

      The use of layers and masks is very powerful in the full version. And the alternative film simulations are good for Fuji. I've jumped ship from Nikon to Fuji and initially bought the Fuji-full version, but I've got many years worth of Nikon raw files and have upgraded to the Full pro version because the Fuji only allows jpg editing of Nikon stuff - it wouldn't do DNGs or other formats coming from Nikon. Very very happy with the results. In my view, and to my subjective taste, C1 does a better job of .NEF files than Nikon's own systems.

      @@martintolley9234 I've made the jump from Lr 6.14 to (now) C1 Pro 20. I'd used C1 a bit back to ver. 6 I think, but never played with it much as I'd been with Lr from v.1 Beta and saw no reason to switch. As I shoot with a Sony A7RIII, I tried the free Express version of C1 first. In my opinion the Express version isn't worth the price, but the Pro version definitely is. YMMV!

      @@robertpeterson6402 Robert: You're not mistaken. C1 Express is free to registered owners of Fuji and Sony cameras. I still don't think it's worth the price. 🙂
      If you're new to C1, in my opinion the missing features in Express lend one to think the full version isn't worth investing in.

      @@MikeNelsonPedde Good point. Not an issue for me though. I am new to Photography so just about anything free has some value to me😬. I like what I have seen so far and these tutorials are a tremendous help. I will end up trying C1.

    What if I would have English and Dutch names for birds in my keywords and would like to select the name in both languages for a picture ?

      Since you can create child keywords within keywords, what I do is to put the common name as a child of the scientific name: American Robin
