  • Stative verbs can be confusing, but not after this lesson! I'll explain what they are, how to use them, and how not to use them. You'll learn the most common verbs that are ALWAYS stative, so there's no confusion in your mind. You'll master verbs like "love", "hate", "need", "know", "understand", "appreciate", "prefer", "realize", and more. Take the quiz on this lesson at www.engvid.com... . Then, download my free, full list of stative verbs for reference in the future: www.engvid.com...

Hi Rebecca, thank you for the valuable content!
I do have a small question. Can stative verbs be used as gerunds? I'm confused because some say that stative verbs should not be used as gerunds.
For example; "Knowing his problem, Anne talked to him gently." Is this sentence correct?

I am not native speaker, but while i was reading" the adventures of Sherlock Holmes" I saw a line contains with " I am loving it" Apparently I found this expression in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Valley of Fear. Here an official detective - Alec MacDonald, a Scotchman - uses it while describing his joy at listening to Sherlock Holmes. The lines are as follows:
"Ay, that's remarkable," said the inspector thoughtfully. "Talk away, Mr. Holmes. I'm just loving it. It's fine!"

And what about 'feel'? I got that there're stative verbs which can not be used in progressive or continuous forms, e.g.: I'm detesting myself (wrong), I detest myself (right) or she is adoring me (wrong), she adores me (right). But 'feel' as I think is a debatable one, e.g.: I can ask: A) 'How do you feel?' and smb can answer: B) 'I've got a terrible migraine today, can't even get up and do sth.' The question is: can it be referred to the verb 'feel'? And is there a boundary between sense and emotion? For instance, If I'm asking smb "How are you feeling now?" and he or she answers: I'm feeling as if I was struck by a hammer or A): 'How are you feeling right now?', B): 'Couldn't meet the deadline at work, so feeling really down and angry , would it be an appropriate 'feel' usage?

Hi Rebecca! I reallly enjoy your lessons, you're so clear and accurate... let me ask you a question, I was reading a short story written by Chekhov, "The bet", and 2nd statement says: "The old banker was walking up and down his study and remembering... I've tried to find out if there is one meaning of remember which is a dynamic or if it's both, but honestly I wasn't able to find a solution, could you answer or point me where I can find the answer? Thanks a lot. You are the reason why I became part of engvid!

Great video... I have some doubts:
    - Are you able to use stative verbs with -ING in a literary context? Can we find out this form as a literary resource?
    - If you cannot use the -ING how do you say for example "We are understanding the class" refering to a present and unfinished moment?
