WHAT IS HIGH GRADE STONE?
Anything you can run a 1/2" or more flake with a pressure flaker.
HEAT TREATING:
Heat treat a few FLAKES of everything you got except HIGH GRADE Raw Stone, Obsidian, Dacite, Basalt, Hornstone, Sonora, Fort Payne, or Rhyolite. Start with flakes and spalls less than 1" thick for 200°F for 24 hours to dry it out. Then raise the temp to 275°F and hold for 4 hours. Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back I at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 4 hours.
Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back in at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 1/2 hour, the raise to 375 for 4 hours.
Repeat with temp going up 50°F until you reach 600°F or nice chippable stone. Whichever comes first. If no good result, or things blow up, let us know. - แนวปฏิบัติและการใช้ชีวิต

Crafty,
Experiment with turning the left wrist starkly bent toward you when flaking to achieve thinness, or getting close to thinness, in order to make flakes that travel at a 30 to 45 degree angle across the face of the biface like the Clovis points we see in the replicas of the Fenn Cache bifaces.
I was doing that, bending the wrist starkly while flaking and achieved that type/angle of flakes and it resembled the Fenn Cache bifaces but was not doing a very good job of it. It's been so long ago though, I can't give much advice on how to do it.
You'll have to do it your own way, as you know, anyway.
Gotta grind the sides of the base so it is not sharp in order to finish it.
@jcadams8232 Yeah, I've tried this 45° angle flaking on-and-off in the past with indirect percussion and I like it. I'm working the small points first and moving up to the larger pieces. I seem to overpower the strikes on the large pieces, so I haven't used it much. The wrist positioning is a tricky thing for me as I don't seem to have any strength in my forearm unless I stay in a narrow range.
@@jcadams8232 Agreed

Oh man! 😁
There are people who don’t even knap who listen to these videos. We find them relaxing.
Thanks for making this video
Thank you again Patrick 😂 , for the insight and instruction, I still cannot do it but it gives me some goals and helps my attitude. I'm not smart enough to say anything clever but appreciate your attempt to help me work on my (skill ha). I gave up 5 times 2 days ago 3 times yesterday and can't help myself got to try today 😅😢😂. Anyway 2 more knappins this week and next, thanks again!
No problem. 👍
Wes Studi, breaking clocks to be right twice a day.
😂
Long fl/ake deb/ate.
Quantum leap for the stupid knapper.
After studying and listening too your videos on long flakes, including historic ones numbered 477; 478 and 479: I’ve made some changes, first my striker is no longer wood, it’s now a 1 kg bronze bar 1.25” diameter 9” long, I also changed my half inch steel bar to a three eights copper bar with a small rounded end, after some practice with angles putting the round copper on the very edge with the flake angle as near to 50 degrees as I can, and striking slightly into the piece not straight down, I can now produce long flakes every few strikes, my strike has to be much harder due to the workability of the flint sometimes costing me a point or body snap, but it works and I hope will eventually improve. Thanks for your time and insight from the happy stupid knapper with a bad wrist.
That's awesome!
Force and angle interest me , thank you for explaining 👍

Once again, a super fine point. I think grok is a crock.😜. And personally I don't spend to much time on those who argue points. At my age I'm to busy with things that matter. Liked video much. Enjoy the snow. 🤣🤣👍
My pressure flakes just got 4x longer. I can suddenly thin down with pressure and I have no clue what I'm doing different, my best guess is something about the follow through. It's weird.
Intetesting!
Hey Patrick thank you for the video, I thought about your little diamond file and how you said they wear out fast. I found some round diamond knife sharpeners online for like $10, I think they may last longer than the harbor freight ones. Also I am struggling with organizing as well im going to experiment with tv trays/end tables to keep tools and rocks close at hand. Hope you and your family are doing well, enjoy the snow!
Good job Jack
I like using copper tools the most. The last one I made, I poured molten copper into a wire mold and hardened it by running it through my rolling mill before putting it in a wood handle.
Nice!
It's all about the angle of indirect percussion.
your straightening the humps and bumps out
33:36 you laugh but it’s only a matter of time before everyone knaps with frozen beets and carrots in-laid with corn nuts

Knapperz are nutz !
Safety glasses would be nice
My latest challenge is to successfully handle early spalls I made long ago with concavities.
I found success by practising the control to send a gentle flake only as far as the centre of the bottom of the concavity.
This either eliminated it or greatly reduced it.
The problem for me was to draw back on the delightful success to finally achieve the largest longest flat flake with a power strike.
A flake that was a little too strong would leave a insignificant tiny step.
I see

I had some glass like that but turned out to be olive green.
Yes. That's another dark color that's common. I actually like the green better.
Wish I could get anywhere near that step fracture 🥴
I totally understand this sentiment 😅
That's funny, I say u do an excellent job knapping with the tool u use , some people think they are right using antler and that the only way , listen to this I was shooting at a tournament in the traditional class and a lady told I should not be in that class because for one I'm a lefty and I can't my bow more than a 45 degree angle and my bow was not traditional enough , just a stick and string not traditional enough ,so hell if I know what her problem was , awesome video Patrick thanks for the kñapping and commentary I really enjoyed it
Thanks. I don't even try to argue anymore.
I think about getting long flakes, the rock isn't suitable for long flakes. Some cherts you can get long flakes, some you can't. Simple.
True. But it depends on what you're trying to make. You can get long flakes on a lot of poor material if the flake is thick enough. The problem arises as the flakes get thinner.
small flakes due to holding back before the strike? All in the head
I know exactly what you mean. Hours, days, weeks they are all the same. It’s like you live in an eternal now. But the sad part is that no one believes you, that that’s the way things are for you.
True
I actually do knap with the videos. It's never my intention initially just envy kicking in
Hehe
Great to watch & your self talk and comments are interesting. & funny in a regularity regularized way 😅

Do you hit the stone at the same angle all the time or do you differ when you see a different size lump on the stone or flake?

So is this fear limited to deer, or is it gingers in general?
Oh man... So, that Christmas movie "Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer" must be more of a horror movie to you.
What could cause a fear like that?

For me, it's not the deer. It's the antler people.
