Someone asked me why I was canning so much. I replied that I have relied on growers, processors and grocers for years. Now I am moving, at 71, to hunter/gatherer until I can be a grower! Thanks to you and other homesteaders, I have canned dry beans, rice, flour and pork and chicken! Our front yard is now growing tomatoes, peppers, Jerusalem Artichokes and some day sweet potatoes, yard long beans and squash! Thank you!!

@@fadedglory1045 We are in our 70s, and if we can do it, *you* can do it! We are in Tennessee and grow (4) 50 ft. rows biointensively to feed 3 families. We may have to move to Florida to be closer to grandkids and daughter (joining forces so they can eat better). We figured we could do it on a 1/4 acre in FL if the house is situated just right. We would *love* an acre, but we can't afford it. We understand from talking to many homesteaders down there, that there are many restrictions on animals. I hope you don't run into those problems. Ron Strobel we are one of the last areas to allow animals on just an acre. Some with money are moving in and building new fancy homes and want all the restrictions. We keep fighting to keep it as is. The new train being built along 528 and 95 are encroaching on us as they have bought up land to build neighborhoods out here. So people can live in our quaint little town and work in Miami or Jacksonville. I for one don't always like progress 😉 ☹️ thanks for the input.

I've been Gardening for years. COMPLETELY turned my garden into NO TILL moved over 32 cubic yards of compost, manure, and mulch. Built 4 huge raised beds, and made 20 wicking tubs. Started new strawberry patch, asparagus patch, and blueberrys. We are raising 21 laying hens and are ordering 20 meat chickens this weekend. Will do another 20 in July. That's about 200 lbs of chicken when butchered. We harvest 2 deer a year giving us another 130 lbs of meat. We pressure can everything. Plan on 1000 jars this year. Also harvest locally caught fish for the freezer.
Our next adventure is bee keeping.
    Constantly improving our permaculture homestead.
We're retired and raising 2 beautiful granddaughters. Food has become EXTREMELY important for us and is priority #1 Thinking about buying a green house for next year.
Love your videos and great ideas. We're going to be more dependant than ever before about food supply and seed keeping.

Kevin & Sarah, this year we have expanded our garden to help out some of our elderly neighbors they just can't maintain a garden do to their health issues. We have also included extra chickens, pigs, turkeys. We made the decision to do this way before this pandemic became an issue. The need was discussed at church at our annual harvest day back late September. We raised the money for extra grain etc...We live in an area that takes over an hour just to get to a grocery store. Our local farmers have seen an increase of community resident's ordering directly from them. For the last 2 years we go shopping for things we can't produce here flour, sugar, rice, paper products etc... The last time I went shopping was mid October. I encourage others to look out for their elderly neighbors. We will get through this. God Bless and be well.😊😊

Although our supermarkets do have alot of imported food, in my region the people are a little less sophisticated and tend to buy mostly local food. It's a mindset that we all need to adopt going forward. Always Buy local and in season. Excellent advice for anyone in the world that can acquire the resources and space to start producing at least some of their own food. When people stop to admire my front yard garden, I have been asking them if they garden and whether they do or not, I encourage them to grow more food. I keep some seeds I have saved in my pocket often times to give away to push people to grow something. I also grow extra plants to give away, and this year I was able to restart a few people in gardening, and gave the first ever tomato plant to the family across the street.

All three ladies follow the rules of canning and start with something easy like jam. I never ate jam in my life until I made my own, I knew every berry that went into the jam was fresh, no bugs and you sure can't say that about store bought. Go for it. And for everything else buy wide mouth jars everything fits easily into the jar and you don't have three different jar sizes with bands and lids.

Thrift stores are a great place to find dehydrators and canning jars. Also look for containers for plants.
It is too hot here to raise rabbits but our chickens are doing well.
I am canning meat, as much as I can lay my hands on. Hopefully, our garden produces and our fruit trees bear fruit.

Just make sure they are not going to be huge veggie plants. Consider what you can plant in flowerpots. ( Peas, cherry toomatoes, salad greens, herbs). Good luck!

I have been thinking this way since February and trying to gently steer my friends and family toward giving it some thought. Most of them can’t wrap their minds around the idea that they can’t just order everything they want next day off the internet. Most of us are such hothouse flowers. I am working on more than doubling the size of my garden this year. I started saving seeds last year, and I have stocked up on the dry goods I can’t grow. I keep telling people I hope with all my heart that in a couple months they’ll be able to tell me I overreacted. But, so far, my batting average in the forecast department has been distressingly high.

You're absolutely right. Buying local is important for many reasons. Not the least of which is that the farmer sees more money for his wares than if he has to sell through a middle man. We've branched out over the past ten years from gardening into bee keeping, egg layers, and this year we're starting meat birds (while researching rabbit rearing). Such a timely message! The past several years I have been aware of my family of people of faith, including our own household, have been impressed upon to "get rural" as much as possible. Learning and practicing the old ways is becoming much more common. My family has been actively searching for acreage to homestead in our area for a couple years now. We currently live in an area that would be called suburban and it doesn't allow for anything but some container gardening at the moment. But I have tomatoes, peppers, spinach, kale, lettuce, microgreens and some herbs in pots. I am also trying okra in pots. Not super confident that it will work but you never know unless you try! Everybody can do SOMETHING! Times are changing...…..

I remember about 12 years ago when I started growing my food, and canning like we did when I was a kid. People thought it was 'cute' and would ask how would I ever eat all of that, then be shocked at how much food they went through when they took notes. I have about 1/2 acre of raised beds and a few in ground and can be sure I won't go hungry (3 of us) through a tough Montana winter. What seemed crazy 12 years ago, well now, I guess I doesn't look so crazy. So ready to help anyone I can learn to grow, save seed, start seed and can and preserve what they grow. I am lucky I grew up with parents who grew up on a farm and always had a garden.

We personally have enlarged our gardening venture and started our own seeds for the first time, and doing well with it. We are also looking at small livestock, chicken, rabbit, quail. We have a big backyard, and also own lots that are close to 1 acre 2 blocks from our house. We live in a small town that allows livestock with in reason and with a permit. We live within 1 block of 4 chicken flocks, and another one coming soon across the alley from us. It can and should be done, if you can , grow or raise at least some of your own food.

People thought I was crazy when I started becoming more self-sufficient. I started by building a greenhouse, buying chicks, building a chicken tractor and chicken house, plowing up a garden spot. I had people asked why you going to do all this extra work when you can just go to the store? I told them one day you might not be able to get things from the store. They laughed and said that will never happen. Now look how thing happened when covid-19 hit. No eggs, low on meat, can goods off the shelves. Multiple things got me to this like all the recalls on produce, tasteless produce and eggs, the thought of all the GMO and hormones, chemicals sprayed on the food. When things first started getting Shakey and I went to my local seed company they was stressing saying people are hoarding seeds. People they never seen in the store flocking in and buying up large amounts of seeds. They worried about how long it will take to restock the amount of seeds that was bought to most like never get planted. Figuring 2 years before they get the stock back. Now all the people that thought I was crazy to do all the work are making sure to let me know they want eggs, produce and chicken if things get crazy to find. Be an Ant not a grasshopper remember that story it will save you in hard times.

@@cynthiafisher9907 it is amazing when people want your eggs (in my case) but they can't be bothered to bring me their veggie scraps. I no longer share the eggs with anyone but my family unit.
