I cite my sources and they may differ than other people's accounts, so I don't guarantee the actual accuracy of my videos.
Guns N’ Roses would rule the world from 1988-1993 releasing several huge albums including Appetite for Destruction and the Use Your Illusion Records. Following the Use your illusion tour in 1993, the band struggled to write new material. The band cobled together a covers album that was put out in 1993 tilted the spaghetti incident and the following year they released a cover of the rolling stone’s song sympathy for the devil for the film interview with the vampire. By 1995 Slash released his side project Slash’s snakepit, signalling the end of his working relationship with frontman Axl Rose for nearly 20 years. He would leave the band the following year and would be followed by bassist Duff McKagan in 1997 and drummer Matt Sorum would be fired by Rose the same year. By 1998 Rose was the last man standing from the 80’s lineup of the band. He had to assemble a new band and while a lot of people came and went over the next 2 decades, one of the more interesting members to join the band was guitarist Buckethead. Today, let’s take a look at his time in the band.
It was frequently reported in the press in the early to mid 90’s that frontman Axl Rose was not just a fan of hard rock music, but more alternative bands including Jane’s Addiction, Pearl Jam and Nine Inch Nails. When Guns N’ Roses began workign on their proper follow up to 1991’s use your illusion it was reported that Rose wanted the band’s music to grow and evolve, while guitarist Slash wanted to stay closer to the band’s hard rock sound. Perhaps Rose gave us a sneek peak of where his mind was at when he put out the head scratching tune My World on Use your illusion 2. In 1995 Slash who was doing press for Slash’s Snakepit revealed where Axl’s mind was at the time musically saying to metal hammer There was a point there where Axl goes: 'I'm gonna do a solo record, and I'm gonna get Trent Reznor and Dave Navarro, and [Dave Grohl,] the drummer from Nirvana...' and so on. And it's like, he doesn't even know half of these people. He's just pulling them out of the sky." (Slash, Metal Hammer, 11/95)
In a separate interview with Canadian Radio Slash would state the same year "Then [Axl] decided his solo-project he could do with Guns, which I was like, after doing all those videos and this and that and the other, I was like: "No". [laughs] No, I don't wanna get involved in any kind of Stephanie Seymour ballads or any of that shit.
As Axl assembled his new lineup of GUns N’ Roses in the late 90’s he would bring in nine inch nails guitarist Robin Finck, who played with the band in 1998 and 1999, but he would depart the group just before the millennium leaving the band without a guitarist. While future guitarist Richard Fortus was asked to audition it would fall through with him recalling to "I was scheduled to ultimate guitar They called and said, 'Yeah, we want to fly you out this week.' I was going to be there anyway doing sessions, so I could do it at that time. They said, 'Perfect.' I didn’t hear back from them, so I just figured, 'Well, it must not be happening.'" (Richard Fortus, Ultimate Guitar, 11/26/08). In a separate interview with TImes Union he would state
"Before that audition happened, Axl saw Buckethead play, and he decided to go with him instead
Fortus wouldn’t join the band until 2002 and still plays with them to this day. As for how Buckethead joined, Rose wasn’t sure how to get a hold of the guitarist, but Guns N’ Roses drummer at the time Josh Freese knew Buckethead and helped Rose track him down. Freese would reveal to podmotaic that he had heard that buckethead was up in san francisco hanging out with the band Primus so Freese would place a call to Primus manager Dave Lefkowitzrecalling the conversation he had with Lefkowitz The first thing I was like, "Do you think Buckethead would be into this, he's such a quirky, weird, artiste?" And Dave goes, "Yeah, I think he is tired of the starving artist routine, I think he is ready to make a living"."
Things wouldn’t be solidified until Buckethead was invited to Rose’s home for Christmas in 1999. It had been a tough holiday season for bucket who was h

Agreed. I don't blame Buckethead. Chinese Democracy should've been released in 2002 at latest. Almost all of the songs on it were written from 98-00, yet Axl kept tinkering and tinkering, and all the great material ended up being drowned out by his layers and layers of adding stuff. For example, take a song like Chinese Democracy....I think the early live versions were boss, but by the time it appeared on the album they added a drawn out pointless intro, a hundred guitars, several overdubs on the vocals, and they removed all the sounds that made the early versions so good. Same thing with Street of Dreams....the early versions had an Estranged-like guitar part in the beginning and after the first verse, which is what made me fall in love with it in the first place. On most of the songs Tommy's bass is drowned out by all the layers and added bullshit. I do like the album, but it could've been better. Tinkering doesn't always make a product better, and it pisses off those that made the album a reality in the first place.

They were invited to the complex, a place where Warner Bro's records used to develop talent. Development deal is basically directed rehearsals under the guidance of music industry professionals on their dime. People like Madonna and STP had development deals with Warner where they would go there and get lessons and training to be better artists. My friends said they were led into a studio back door to check out the GnR rehearsal room. They said they saw Zakk Wylde's amps next to Slash's setup. There's a lot of that type of energy coming from the guy. I don't really think it's a gimmick, or at least that it didn't start out that way. I think it was just a thing of not being comfortable being around other people. But I could be wrong.

Buckethead made music that was wayyy more complicated than GNR ever intended to release. That's not to insult GNR, they take a more classic approach to guitar that I really love, but damn Buckethead must have been bored.

    • @birdsteak9267
      @birdsteak9267 2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

Just because someone is very technical, doesn't mean that playing something beneath their level is boring, only elitist dickheads have that attitude to use everything they deem less then their level boring ONLY as an opportunity to look down on everyone they see as less then themselves. Like when Portnoy went on Tour with Avenged Sevenfold, all their stuff is far from the complex the stuff Portnoy do, but he enjoyed himself just as much.
To a level-headed, down to earth guy, doing less is like being on holiday, a time of having more fun.
Trust me, no matter how good you are, complex stuff require a lot of work, a lot of mental strain, it is first when their stuff been rehearshed is when it becomes less work and more fun.
A lot of bands cut down on complexity and length to make touring easier and more enjoyable, because 1: Long songs = Shorter Set-lists. 2: You can be a lot more engaging with the crowd.
Metallica had to chop up their songs into medleys because their songs got too long, and yhe intensity etc, made them wish for simpler, shorter and more tour oriented songs.
Buckethead wouldn't been there if he didn't find less complex songs fun and engaging. Its harder to make simple riffs that is great, that in itself is a challenge.

Must every song need to be technical and complex for them to be enjoyable?
I like technical and complex songs but
People better not forget what Music actually are all about, it's rythm and melody, if a song is good, it doesn't matter if it's easy or complex, it's not a good merit to judge what is and what isn't good based on a level of complexity.
Sit down, try to make a simple riff that is actually good, it is actually very difficult if you want it to be original and indentifiable. Fear of the dark is rather a simple song but it is good.
If you make a song, whatever serves the song goes, Sometimes adding a extra note helps, sometimes removing a note helps, it's a part of the puzzle-work. You might sit on top of a golden riff as we speak, but it's not completely there yet, cuz you need to figure out the puzzle work of what it needs to serve a song well and therefore people will like it.

Made up or not, there's some very real issues that linger on in that man. And, as so often happens, we all end up benefiting by getting to hear him. He's the greatest, and has been for years IMO. Astounding combination of technique, feel and originality. Colma is some of my favorite work of his, with little to none of the fretboard calisthenics. Just him and Brain in a mausoleum. I don't care what anyone says, I loved the 2001-2002 era of the band. Out of all the live shows available on the internet today, I always find myself watching the House of Blues show and Rio De Janeiro shows of 01, as well as many shows from 2002. This lineup was amazing.. and I think better than the old era. Their chemistry was amazing and they wrote some great material, the best of which still hasn't seen the light of day aside from some instrumental leaks.....but that said, said leaks show a band working very hard to pump out new music but Axl not doing much of anything. No wonder Buckethead and later on Finck left. Chinese Democracy should've been released back in 2001 or 2002. If that happened, I bet this lineup would've remained because they would've then released its followup in possibly 2004 and the final album of the Chinese trilogy in 2006 or 2008. Such wasted opportunity. Sometimes you don't realize how good something was until it's gone, and Buckethead was part of that. I remember reading an interview with Brain where Buckethead had said, "Why does it have to be so hard [to put out an album]?" The same can be said for Robin Finck and Bumblefoot. These guys were psyched to be part of Guns, and had really nothing to show for it. And now all these awesome songs are sitting in a vault somewhere being forgotten about....songs like Oklahoma, Atlas Shrugged, Perhaps, State of Grace, Quick Song...even Billionaire, Prom Violence, and Zodiac...all great songs that had potential. NuGNR could've been even bigger and better than the Guns of old with a new millennium sound all played by professionals. AND LETS BE HONEST HERE....BUCKETHEAD WOULD MOP THE FLOOR WITH SLASH. 'Nuff said.

Chinese Democracy had the slightest bit of Nu Metal on it cause it's a confusing album that doesn't know what it wants to be made during two different eras. Metallica put out St. Anger their Nu Metal attempt with mixed to bad results but I like the album it's alright beside the trash can being hit on every track

The early demos from the late 90's fit better.
It would have been appropriate at the time, but in 2008 the train had already left for it.
In 2008 CD really didn't know where to go, which is a shame because the potential for something bigger was there.
2001 an album, a few videos and a full world tour and things probably would have been very different for the band.
As with most bands, a lot of old fans probably wouldn't have been thrilled, but i think under the right circumstances CD would definitely have found its audience and success.
GN'R is a band that, after UYI, with any line up, up to and including today, has left its potential untapped like hardly any other band.

The worst thing you can be, is be bored. That is when the crazy ideas come out and sound reasonable.

Buckethead is a genius..It would most likely be torturous to ask him to sit and wait to be creative. If you are going to hire him you have to actually use his abilities.

@@twistoffate4791 name one person who has more raw technique? You can hate his songs, but you can't deny his technique.

The guy released more than 100 albums in 1 year. I can see why GnR frustrated him!

I saw this lineup in 2002 in Chicago before the tour got canceled. Buckethead was a strange dude. I figured there was no way they would ever get back together so I figured it was better than nothing. Tickets to see them now are so expensive!
