I absolutely LOVE Nikon’s new Zf and hope this hints at Nikon directing itself towards a Leica-esque level of design and engineering befitting their history. Less menus, more buttons, brass and titanium build quality, and printed dof scales. I appreciate they continue to be a low light leader. Leave the megapixel race to proper larger formats (Fuji seems is knocking out of the park in this department) but the timeless feel of this body size should have Nikon elevating the build to fine Art. Thanks Matt
I think it's a 135mm special effect lens. Possibly a soft focus effect with a large f-stop. Controllable effect similar to the old DC lenses. Notice how uniform the bokeh at the end of the video is, no swirl or cat-eye effect in the corners, quite possibly from a telephoto lens.
My money is on 'Plena' being an adaptation of the 'planar' design, which is so connected with Zeiss that Nikon are probably trying to avoid legal issues.
Plena is a word in old Latin (Ancient Rome) and actually in Catalan and in Spanish that means “full, complete… of something”. The brand Plena in the new Nikon’s lens may mean “full of light”
Check the side of the lens from the frame of the photographer lifting it up to his eye. It looks to me like a 3 digit number to indicate the focal length. I’m going out on a limb here but it looks like “105 mm” to me and that isn’t on the map so this could be something special and not a typical 35 f1.2 or a 135 f1.8. Nikon have always had a 105 in their line up until the Z-line so my money is on this.
The best surprise ever, the non on the roadmap option, would be it is my beloved 105 1.4 for Z mount. Since it was THE truly special lens that deserves a new designation for itself !
Hi, Matt, It could be both 35 and 135mm. Just watch the short video, part of looks like shooting at night in distance which could be 135mm and at end is looked up to the sky for night star that indicate is wide angle 35 1.2. Either way is exciting.
Hi Matt! Whatever it is, I'm guessing it's gonna be spectacular! Nikon set the bar with the 58mm Noct f/0.95 and 85mm f/1.2 (like you, I can't get enough of that lens). It crossed my mind that the awaited 35mm might push the envelope (AKA aperture) further. We'll know soon enough.
Hi Matt - this is exciting - whether it is the 35 1.2 S or the 135 1.8 S - some variant of either - or a different lens all together, I will be getting it - pretty sure you will as well. These lenses are in large part why I love shooting with Nikon (and in general). These are the lenses that stand out from the pack and really differentiate "SLR Style" (including Mirrorless) photography from Iphone photography. Super excited about this release! -PD
Being Latin and being from the country where we used to speak Latin these are (in English now) the various meaning of the world 1) full, 2) pregnant, 3) satiated / satisfied 4) abundant and/or rich 5) Big o Fat 6) whole, complete, PERFECT (maybe that's what Nikon means?) 7) Sounding 8) substantial (as referred to food) 9) Deep (when referred to sleep) 10) Crowded So I don't really know what is Nikon referring to... however looking at that Bokeh balls, they do look 'full and perfect' (two of the meaning of Plena). Also we refer to Luna Plena (full Moon) that is what most of these bokeh balls looked like at the end. The absence of 'onion rings' tells us something about the nr of elements and at the quality of the glass and f stops that this lens achieves. To be a 35mm would be a bit of a waste using a latin term for a 35mm lens, I reckon we're looking at a new 135mm f/1.8 that is thus 'completing' the cycle of portrait lenses in the new Nikkor's lineup. I don't know it's just speculation, but would you use Latin words for a 24 mm for example?? (Unless it were f/0.7 that is!). Boh... go figure...
Good call on Copenhagen, that is definitely the Opera House in the teaser. And, since it is Copenhagen, what better place to demonstrate bokeh than during the annual Copenhagen Light Festival.
Hey Matt, I think the plena could mean ultra bokeh. Sure, the 85mm f/1.2 is really gorgeous with the bokeh….I love that lens…but, a 135mm f/1.4 or f/1.8 would just create luscious circles everywhere. And if you look at the last shot in the teaser, he is gawking at some pretty wild bokeh.
Nice vid Matt -- I greatly doubt this has Defocus Control like the Nikkor 135mm f/2.0 DC. I am hoping that is comes with 11 rounded blades like the Z 85/1.2 and 58 Noct. I was surprised when the 50/1.2 only has 9.
Matt, my guess is a one off like the Noct. Portrait focused with either a defocus control or perhaps a greater image circle than the 35mm frame to keep the Bokeh round? If that is what the physics requires. So my guess 85-105mm and at least 1.4 if not faster depending on Focal Length.
it also means "full of" or space filled by matter...so probably is the 135mm 1.8! also at the time mark 0:08 you can see 3 blurred numbers ,it is not 2 digits...so 135
Definitely Copenhagen. I was kind of annoyed at the lack of f1.4s in the line up but after using the 1.8s I feel they almost render like 1.4s. I can't really describe it but I was amazed.
Hi Matt, like a few others here, I cannot look at that front element and not think of the marvellous F-mount 105mm F/1.4E. That and the 28mm f/1.4E are just about the finest F-mount primes ever made (together with the legendary 200mm f/2, of course). On the other hand, since they were released relatively recently - shortly before the D850, I believe, so they were probably meant to be used with it (the quality and the weight balance are just too perfect a match with that camera), just like the 85mm f/1.2 S just begs the Z8 - they are pretty much on par with S-line Z glass, so if this Plena is a Z-mount version of the 105mm it should be pretty epic stuff in order to go beyond what the 105mm f/1.4E achieves. Maybe the "Plena" moniker is a way of stating just that, like the Otus moniker for Zeiss... Let's see. Pretty exciting! P.S.: and yes, that is Copenhagen - more precisely, the CPH Opera House in the background.
It could be either the 35 1.2 (or 0.95?) or the 135 1.8 (or 1.2?) just by looking at the shape and size. Hoping it’s NOT a 135mm. I’d like to have a 135mm 1.8 in a more reasonable price range and I don’t think that’s going to include a lens with a specially engraved name on it. Whatever it is, it’s probably in the 5 to 10 grand range.
As someone stated, Plena means "full". I'm Hoping that translates to a 14mm f1.2 lens (with Plena meaning you can see the "full" night sky). I'm just an author who does photography as a hobby, but I can hope.
It would make no sense to call one of the 1.2-series plena - so I don't think it's the 35. The collins dictionary stated: an enclosure containing gas at a higher pressure than the surrounding enviroment - so it could be a special fabrication where pressurized gas is filled between two glass elements to reduce weight
I think, going by the size, 135mm f1.8 is more likely than a 35mm f1.2. Since it is "Plena" though, could it be a one off f1.4 lens? I think f1.2 is getting a bit big for a 135mm, assuming it is the 135.
So pleased I bought a Z8 because all these big announcements and lack of one related to a Z6iii or a major firmware update for the Z6ii would otherwise be driving me crazy 😂
So if it's something to do with Planar .... we should expect corner to corner sharpness that will make your eyes bleed. I can live with the sharpest lens ever seen. Go on Nikon. I dare you. I double dare you.
P.S. I think that this is truly Nikon's moment (perhaps should be the title of your next video) as Nikon is coming out with amazing stuff recently, in both departments (optics and bodies). I'm not saying this because I shoot Nikon, but I shoot Nikon because I'm seeing this!
Google Translate suggests that Plena is spanish (might then also be Latin) and means Full, Complete or Plenary. Exiting, but to big for I would want to carry around.
I really like Matt's comparison to the Sigma 35mm 1.2, let's also compare the Sigma 135mm 1.8 and Nikon 85mm 1.2 (and the fine Sigma 85/1.4) (Comparisons are Sigma 35/1.2 || Sigma 135/1.8 || Nikkor 85/1.2 || Sigma 85/1.4) Filter diameter 82mm || 82mm || 82mm || 77mm Lens diameter 3.46" || 3.60" || 4.00" || 3.26" Lens length 5.36" || 4.52" || 5.60" || 3.76" Weight 1090g || 1130g || 1160g || 625g Optics 17E12G || 13E10G || 15E10G || 15E11G I think Matt's comparison to the 85/1.2 is telling, a 35mm f1.2 lens is a complicated, heavy, big piece of optics. The 135/1.8 is rather more straightforward. There are exceptions of course, I could and probably should have included the monstrous and wonderful Sigma Bokeh Monster 105/1.4 and 40/1.4 lenses. And that's where Plena comes in. If indeed the driver for Plena is whole, or "complete", Nikon may well be referring to the luscious bokeh balls being free of cat's eye clipping, even at the widest aperture. In the promo video, which opens filmed with a wide angle lens looking up, and a wide angle lens following the gentleman to the water's edge, he points the camera slightly downward, into the direction of sunlight. The front element of the lens fills with light. Afterwards, he slowly gazes upward in amazement. Are we seeing his reaction to the ripples on the water transitioning to perfect, whole ("Plena") circles of light with no cat's eye effect? Are we seeing zero flare from the sun due to some exotic coating or new material lens element transmitting wider (or whole ("Plena") portions of the spectrum? ( A resurrection of the UV, or even a Coastal/Jenoptik UV-VIS-IR lens would be phenomenal, and wallet-annihilating). As someone else mentioned, are we seeing the effects of a drop-in ND or polarization filter that does not induce vignetting of the whole ("Plena") image? (If yes, Please be the same drop-in filter as the 800/6.3, the polarized one is over 500 USD). Whatever the case, I'm probably in for one, definitely if it's the 35/1.2. Should it happen to be the 135/1.8 with defocus control or apodization filters, I will have to think long and hard, my F-mount Sigma 135/1.8 is a stellar performer, and perhaps more importantly, paid for. What a wondrous time to be a photographer! (grammar edits, grumble)
I should add that "Plena", taken as meaning complete, could be taken as meaning Nikon have thrown all, or at least enough of their technology into a lens which will meet or exceed the requirements of a 96MP (pixel-shifted) Zf. In which case my money would be on the 135mm f1.8 (which I believe may happen to be Sigma's highest resolution lens).
Hi Matt, I like your thoughts. Mine were similar, but I'd been speculating at a 135mm f1.4 S. Your reasoning for a f1.8 makes sense to me. I know the Sigma 135mm f1.8 DG HSM Art lens was always considered a "Bokeh Master" at the f1.8 aperture, albeit big and heavy. I had also been ruminating on the term "plena" which, as you know means "full" in Latin. Why would Nikon choose that name when for the most part they have used only S-line or non S-line to distinguish their lenses, except for (micro: Nikon's term for macro) and Noct (Latin for "night")? Why is the guy in the Plena video shooting at the harbor, towards the sun which is obviously reflecting off the water. Bokeh? Maybe, and probably given the bokeh balls in the final silhouetted frame. But, could it be more? As you know better than I, the main problem with shooting into the light is a camera's inherent lack of dynamic range compared to human vision. The Z7/Z8 /Z9 and now the Zf cameras have commendable dynamic range, but shooting towards the light often begs the use of a filter. The guy in the video is aiming downwards towards the water as you would when wanting to capture a nice foreground in a landscape. The next frame shows the front of the lens with sunlit reflections in the water. That could indicate a 35mm f1.2 instead of a 135mm f1.8, but it could also indicate the enhanced ability of the lens to capture a "full" or "Plena" dynamic range. Is there a built-in filter? I've never used it, but the 95mm Noct lens was great at capturing detail in very low light. I guess we'll know in a few days, but we must admit, Nikon has certainly had an exciting 2023. Good for them and good for us. 🙂
I get it. That's where Matt's explanation of the f1.8 having a similar depth of field as the Z 85mm f1.2 made sense to me. If it was similar in size to the Nikon Z 85mm 1.2, I think there would be interest out there. @@ROOOMC
Siempre es un agrado saber que Nikon presenta innovación en sus cámaras y lentes... increíblemente luego de pasar por varios formatos ... mis más hermosos recuerdos son con una d40 acompañada con un 35mm 1.8.. saludos colegas !
Might be more video-directed or a one-off manual lens that never has any follow-ups. Either way, I'm more interested in an update to the z6 before I buy any more lenses.
Hi Matt... the lens looks like it has 3 rings well could it be a zoom with very bright aperture which features a full range something like 28-80mm f1.8 or 35-85 f2, really exciting one.
I guess Plena will be the new series for larger aperture prime lenses, even 50 1.2 and 85 1.2. It is possible that Nikon will announce a 'facelift' version for those two in the future. 14 1.8, 24 1.2, 28 1.2, 35 1.2, 50 1.2, 85 1.2, 135 1.8, even maybe 105 1.2 and 200 2 will all have Plena on.
It is definitely a 35mm 1.2s lens as the guy is seen roaming on a street and generally when we we want a perfect street photo the best lens that comes to mind is a 35mm lens which is not too wide and not too narrow and it shows the story in the best and the most perfect manner possible, and also a 135mm 1.8 would mot be it because as we know Nikon they don't make small lenses but long ones, so if it were a 135mm it would definitely be long. So it should be that in my opinion, tell me if anyone agrees with my theory.
My guess was that it is the missing 35mm because I only see two blurred digits, not three in the video. Also, Antonio mentioned Plena also means “complete” and this would complete a trio of f1.2 lenses...(personally I thought it would be shorter, but it probably has 16+ elements)
It’s anyone’s guess what it is but I don’t think it’s the awaited 135, nor the 35. Both those lenses are on pre-existing 1.8 & 1.2 roadmap lines of lenses. Food for thought, the Noct was a lens Nikon put out to make a statement, “see what We can do with Z glass primes” Wasn’t clear how many control rings were on the lens in the teaser. Maybe it’s a shortish mid range zoom that states “see what We can do with Z zooms” Just speculating. All I know is once it’s released, Matt will give us some fantastic evening shots.
My guess is 35mm based on the location. Maybe they didn't think of it but it makes more sense if the guy was taking landscapes. They didn't show them doing anything portrait related.
I don’t understand why Nikon would call their 35mm or 135mm a Plena so this leads me to think this is something else completely. One think for sure I am excited whatever it might be but have a suspicion that it’s going to be out of my price range like the Noct!
Am I the only one that picked up that @Riccitalks teased us at the end of his Zf video the rest of the year is going to be busy for Nikon? Anything that has been speculated so far will make it's way to my dry cabinet. Credit card needs to limber up and do some stretches for Tuesday.
Maybe it's the Noct but with AF? I'd buy that. All these hardware (lenses and new cams) announcements by Nikon -- I receive all of them as notice that Nikon resources are aimed at most everything that's not the manufacturing my almost-year-ago ordered 600 tc LOL Cheers!
Seems like an obvious announcement for either the 135/1.8S or the 35/1.2S, but if so, why the special fanfare and branding? One would think Nikon would spend that marketing budget towards a new line of lenses, particularly if they weren't on the release map, and were coming from out of nowhere. The release is right around the corner, so not much point in thinking too much about it.
About 8 seconds into the trailer you can catch an out-of-focus glimpse of the lens markings, and while it remains illegible it does appear to be a 3 digit number followed by the aperture. So my money is on it being the 135mm lens. Given the fact that that this lens gets it's own name, I'm going to go out on a limb guess that Nikon have made something really special, a 135mm f/1.4!
Plena, not part of the normal line up maybe 35mm f1.0, with an 85 mm to follow making a trinity of named specials. At £5000 a pop out of my price range but maybe hire one to play with on my Z9, nice video Matt as usual.
If you pause the promotional video where you can see the lettering on the lens out of focus, it appears to show 3 numbers before the f-stop designation. My money is on a 135.
I think that the designation 'Plena' means, like 'Noct' on the 58mm f0.95, that it will be something very special indeed! Maybe an AF 35mm f0.95? Or a 135mm f1.2? Or perhaps a lens that is not on the roadmap yet. But I do believe it will be awesome, next level. In any case, it will be out of my reach I reckon! So for now, I've started saving up for a black Zf. I can't wait! Cheers
A 135 1.2 seems unlikely. It would have a massive front element of over 110mm, and while the lens in the video is big, I don't think it is that big - that is over 30% bigger (in diameter) than the front element of the other 1.2 lenses, you would be able to notice that in the 'trailer'.
Don't know what it is, but I already know that I can't afford it. 😂
Hahaha me too
It’s “Plena” expensive!.
Lol
😂 when you see cursive writing on the lens you know it’s not for you 💀
5:50 I couldn’t agree more!! I have 5 Nikon Z lenses (2 S and 3 non S) and they’re all amazing. Such a cool time to be in the Nikon ecosystem 😎
I absolutely LOVE Nikon’s new Zf and hope this hints at Nikon directing itself towards a Leica-esque level of design and engineering befitting their history. Funny fact: in my language (czech), plena means nappy for babies :-) I was laughing about the name when I first heard it
No need to add “old” to Latin.
I was about to reply the same and read your comment. Well you beat me to it :)

Yeah, the message I got from the video was "bokeh monster".
i loved the sign off and clips a the end
Could be a Zeiss Planar, sort of like the 28-75 is a tamron lens
Hi Matt, The background at the end of the video looks like spectacular boca to me.

The reflection on the lens shows a nighttime scene. Think they are trying to show that you're shooting at night, but it feels like daytime.
Definitely Copenhagen.

Plena in Spanish means "full" or "complete". It can also mean "right in the middle of something". Don't know if that helps any, but there it is.
According to chatgpt, Plena means "Full" or "Complete" in latin...
It is a medium format camera and lens.
Lol. I hope so.
Hi Matt - Which white balance setting are you using for night time shots? If Auto, which auto mode? :) Thanks :)
Hi Matt, like a few others here, I cannot look at that front element and not think of the marvellous F-mount 105mm F/1.4E. New branding for their defocus dc lens?
What lenses does Nikon not have in the Z line up so far. A fast 105mm and 135mm and the fast 35mm. Is Plenar a play off the Planar lenses of old ?
105mm 2.8 Macro Z is a recent enough lens and can be used for portraits and macro. I can't see another 105mm, but maybe.
So if it's something to do with Planar .... we should expect corner to corner sharpness that will make your eyes bleed.

(Comparisons are Sigma 35/1.2 || Sigma 135/1.8 || Nikkor 85/1.2 || Sigma 85/1.4)
Filter diameter 82mm || 82mm || 82mm || 77mm
Lens diameter 3.46" || 3.60" || 4.00" || 3.26"
Lens length 5.36" || 4.52" || 5.60" || 3.76"
Weight 1090g || 1130g || 1160g || 625g
Optics 17E12G || 13E10G || 15E10G || 15E11G
I think Matt's comparison to the 85/1.2 is telling, a 35mm f1.2 lens is a complicated, heavy, big piece of optics.
I really want Nikon to launch a few compact 1.8 lenses for the ZF
Yep. An ND filter built into the lens.
something like the 135 DC
135 1.4 near 200 F2 glass must bigger than 100MM 82 MM cannot do it ~
我想出现 105 1.2
Could it be another 0.95f
Might be more video-directed or a one-off manual lens that never has any follow-ups. Either way, I'm more interested in an update to the z6 before I buy any more lenses.
Hi Matt... the lens looks like it has 3 rings well could it be a zoom with very bright aperture which features a full range something like 28-80mm f1.8 or 35-85 f2, really exciting one.
Plena = planar? That would suggest a focal length in the standard zoom range.
Since video is kind of a big deal now in the photography world I suspect the PLENA is a Nikon cinema lens line.
It’s the 35 because he definitely looked up after he took the shot.
Guessing a 35mm noct type .095 Astro type lens
I doubt the 35 1.2 would get this kind of press. Guess we will wait 3 days to find out
My guess was that it is the missing 35mm because I only see two blurred digits, not three in the video. Also, Antonio mentioned Plena also means “complete” and this would complete a trio of f1.2 lenses...(personally I thought it would be shorter, but it probably has 16+ elements)
NOCT, the period of darkness each 24 hours between sunset and sunrise, as distinct from day
'Plena' is a Latin adjective meaning full. 'Noct' is the Latin root meaning night. 'Night' makes sense; 'full'?
I'm waiting for 35mm 1.2 lens!
I believe it will be a super super high quality lens like the Noct but at a very very low price so all can enjoy ;)
Ah ha, I was right! 2499 not too bad.
It’s anyone’s guess what it is but I don’t think it’s the awaited 135, nor the 35. Both those lenses are on pre-existing 1.8 & 1.2 roadmap lines of lenses.
Food for thought, the Noct was a lens Nikon put out to make a statement, “see what We can do with Z glass primes”
Wasn’t clear how many control rings were on the lens in the teaser. Maybe it’s a shortish mid range zoom that states “see what We can do with Z zooms”
Just speculating.
All I know is once it’s released, Matt will give us some fantastic evening shots.
My guess is 35mm based on the location. Maybe they didn't think of it but it makes more sense if the guy was taking landscapes. They didn't show them doing anything portrait related.
I think its the 35mm 1.2 because of the wide angle shot of the sky with buildings on each side giving you that 35mm angle of view..
I don’t understand why Nikon would call their 35mm or 135mm a Plena so this leads me to think this is something else completely. One think for sure I am excited whatever it might be but have a suspicion that it’s going to be out of my price range like the Noct!
Would be great if Nikon could deliver lenses that we are waiting for months before announcing new (superexpensive) stuff 😅
How is Plena different from Noct?Old wine in new bottle!!
May be first Cine lens from Nikon :)
105 f1.4 z?
All I know is when Nikon engraves a lens it immediately jumps out of my price range 😅.
Nikon is entering Medium Format? 🤔
This the new 135mm 1.8. Or even 1.4.
I hope that it isn't as expensive as the Noct...
I dont think they would have a name for a lens which is standardish. It will be something different im thinking a 1.8 zoom.
Am I the only one that picked up that @Riccitalks teased us at the end of his Zf video the rest of the year is going to be busy for Nikon? Anything that has been speculated so far will make it's way to my dry cabinet. Credit card needs to limber up and do some stretches for Tuesday.
It's the 105 with defocus control
Could it be a new lens not on the road map like a 14mm ultrawide like the Sigma 14mm Art? That could explain the new name.
It’s the 35mm 1.2
You can tell by the size of it, the shape of it. It looks like their other new 1.2 lenses.
I guess a 135mm with a sort of defocus control.
12:00 am? That’s midnight.
Very interesting to be a cinema 🎥 line?
He's looking up at the sky. It could be a special astrophotography lens - wide, flat field.
It’s going to be “Plena” expensive!.
I don’t know what it is. I am looking forward to the 135. I have two and love them. It is time for Nikon to bring the new one.
I think it is the revamp of 135 f2 dc.
It could go either way but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a 35mm cine lens.
Plena: C17: from Latin: space filled by matter, from plēnus full
I would bet that the new lens would be an improved version of one of Nikons DC lenses 105 or 135
just speculation but I think it could well be a new 135mm DC with Bokeh controll ring
My vote is on a line of cinematic lenses.
When it’s really an expensive 135mm lens then I might keep my beloved Zeiss 135mm f2 Apo Sonnar for f mount
My assumption is it's an astrophotography lens. Just getting that vibe
Plena: Perhaps “plenary” defined as absolute or unqualified.
I guess it’s 135mm.
The photographer eyes is looking on what this lens can reach and how amazing it is, I guess it also very fast focusing
135 1.2 GLASS MUST TO BE BIGGER THAN 112.5 mm ~bigger than 200 F2 100mm ~maybe 6000$
Cinema line lens?
Ahh yeah!! You're smarter than me. Yup. That's what it will be, I was wrong I think. Haha
@@Michael-Masi-911 Did think Astro as the guy looked up, beside cinema screen, besides the bokeh! Who knows eh…
Why could it not be a 105 ?
