- Female racing drivers get a bad rep for various reasons, with some suggesting that they will never be able to compete with men on the world stage. Is this true, though? Because a driver by the name of Michele Mouton completely disproves that theory, as she took on the world back in the 1980s.

Quite unbelievable how overlooked she is in an era where women are looking for sporting inspiration.
Because people are stupid, and don't understand the world existed before the internet, they just fail to look back before the 'smart'phone era, and are shocked when they find there's several thousand years of history with people to inspire of all ages, genders, cross-genders, cross-dressers, races, or global locations. None of this is new, just people who live in an internet-only vacuum seem blind to the realities of history.
Probably because her agent didn't convince her to dress in a bikini for sponsors.
I'd argue people aren't really looking for inspiration.
Look at how "progressive women" tear down my childhood idol, Lara Croft.
Even if fictional, to me it's a sign they don't want role models that CAN, they want people that simply preach.
It's no surprise they overlook many women who accomplished many great things throughout history.
Look up Russian Night Witches and tell me why none of that is in any of your "woke" battlefield games.
I have many inspirational women to look up to, especially in sport, I just don't get any of them from modern media, I have to find them myself.
Rally is such an overlooked sport, at least in America. Never talked about or covered in mainstream press. I only got into it through video games, lol. Never heard of Mouton 'til I came across this video, and my God what a skilled and fucking fearless driver she was.
@@KyleS.1987 unfortunately, that is because America has made it's fascination on going in a circle and straight line speed when it comes to Motorsport. It's pretty sad. But, with awesome athletes like Rhys Millen, Ken Block, Tanner Foust, Brian Deegan, and many others, rally is becoming more popular in America.
I feel like it wasn't expressed enough that she drove in Group B cars: cars so fast they outlawed them. She drove in the fastest and hardest cars to drive and won.
Moreso she retired because non Group B cars bored her
I agree except for the last part the most powerful and insane was the Lancia Delta s4, that thing had a MINIMUM of 550hp with a super charger and turbo charger being able to do 0-100kmh in just 2.3 seconds on gravel!!!

@@joao_1986 And yet,Group A spec Delta Integrale,along with others that competed in that class,is faster on all stages than S4 or any other Group B car for that matter.
She was the top driver of Audi's legendary Quattro rally team, that says all.
Notice: This was the Group B time. Cars, that were almost impossible to drive for normal people. She did it to perfection. She and Walter Röhrl were the divers with the best "feeling" for the cars, maybe the best rallye drivers ever.
I vividly remember Michele Mouton waving and smiling at me as a 7 year old boy watching the cars transition between stages at the 82 rally NZ.
Her dark flowing hair and bright red lipstick really made her a super model behind the wheel of her Audi Quattro.
That moment will remain with me forever. She always was and always will be my fave rally driver.
Iconic to see her just before the stage, putting on her red lipstick and then just absolutely be a beast on the road.
On that note, of meeting rally drivers, i have actually met björn valdegårds mother when i was younger than 1 years old.
Walter Rohrl has apologised for his comments since. As far as I know, Vatanen hasn't.
Adding to that, Röhrl was the one who told her to go to audi. Which in retrospect was a brilliant career move.
There's also more than one way to look at his comment. He never dismissed her skill, but said it would hurt his pride more if he lost to a women. And being honest thats a way many man still feel, including me. No man wants to lose to a woman in something that is typicaly seen as a mens sport.
I see where pride comes into it, that's understandable...still a bit off though.

there actually is a german interview with röhrl where he talks about the championship he says that in retrospect the win didnt matter to him and that he really regrets mouton not winning because it would have been such a great thing for motorsport in general if mouton would have won so i guess he really feels sorry for the comment he made back in the day
It's so weird to see how people haven't heard of her, as she was one of the titans of Group B rallying back in the day.
This might just be me, but I always got the impression with Group B rallying people cared more about the cars then the drivers.

@@craigwilde2162 True, i know people like Rohrl & Mouton from Group B but for the most part? It's mostly overshadowed by people discussing cars like the Quattros, Deltas, and so on.
While Group A, which turned into modern day WRC, have the people know more about the drivers and still keep the car part of it big (if that makes sense). We got names like McRae, Sainz, Makinen, Loeb, Ogier, and so on while also having iconic cars like the Impreza, EVO, Celica GT4, etc.
Imagine watching a Group B tribute, something every motorsports fan should do, and they see Mouton and go "who's that chick lol"
And you even forgot to mention her Pikes Peak win..

Her story would make a great motion picture. A studio needs to pick this up and bring an incredible era back to life.
They would spoil it . Now a feature length documentary with re enactments and stock footage of her racing . That would be much better.

The fact that she raced the group B monsters against legends speaks volumes about her ability and talent.
Back in the 80’s I worked for the Audi UK rally team. One Sunday I was tasked with the job of taking the S1 to Goodwood so Michele could do a lap or two for the crowd. I took my then 8 year old son. Fast forward to the end of the day my son was sat in the car while I was packing up the van, Michele came along and said to me she would take my son for a ride so off they went with him in the co-driver seat, couple of minutes later they pull back in and there is is sat on her lap steering the car while she drove it.....lucky boy. She was a genuinely nice person.
What a legend she is.

Michelle Mouton is such a legend that in my mind just saying that she is the best female racing driver is a severe understatement. She is one of the best racing drivers in History.
Not all of them were dicks to her at the time. I recently read an interview of Mouton with a Finnish magazine. She credited Hannu Mikkola with selflessly helping her when she came to Audi. She was using Mikkola's setups as she didn't know much about setting up the car, and he also taught her to left-foot brake which was apparently critical with the Quattro. She described Mikkola as a perfect gentleman.
and anyway, ari vatanen went into politics in conservative party to say that climate change is a hoax and be against abortion. so vatanen was always that kind of guy and never changed.

Michelle Mouton was an absolute legend. Have you seen how she drove in Africa both in '82 and '83? Lancia was at Audi's heels in '83 and Mouton was on her brink of collapse but she drove the wheels out of the Audi till a jump snapped her front left suspension which bent her brake disc and wheels and caused her to DNF.
PLUS, she was the one that set up the ROC, Race of Champions where cross sport champion drivers come to this event and prove that they can infact drive anything and be crowned champions.
That, is amazing.
Let's not forget that she raced in WRC, meaning she drove a questionable car with questionable aerodynamic in questionable track condition. It is insane how good she was.

Not really, I highly doubt a woman on equal footing would win any high level sport, biology is far more influential than political correctness. Men are far more competitive and there is a far larger group of men in position to get into things like being an F1 or Rally driver, its a much larger pool of much more competitive personalities, with a generally much more adventageous biological traits. It's been well proven that males have quicker reflexes and fine motor skill than females. The creator of this video had to omit the fact that the Audi was AWD competing against RWD cars. Do you really believe a woman would be able to become Formula 1 World Champ? It's simple numbers it would never happen.

Kinda shocked that you failed to mention the key part on why Mouton is extremely famous during her active days....
She finished 2nd on the 1982 championship battle, when WRC was still running the infamous Group B regulations....
For those who don't know, Group B is the most brutal machinery for rallying WRC had ever used. The cars running with up to 600HP, and almost no restriction whatsoever. It makes some serious speed but also caused some very gnarly crashes.....
It's the combination of power and complete disregard for safety that made Group B so dangerous. Some of the earlier Group B cars could have still made for a sustainable championship, but later cars (the Lancia Delta S4 in particular) were just deathtraps.
Just been able to say "I was a group B rally driver", its enough to gain respect. But also been someone who win a rally on those years, is incredible

@@Dexter037S4 With the 037? Perhaps you could argue that, but by the time the Delta S4 came around, the Quattro had already been rendered irrelevant by the 205 T16, and Audi had run out of ways to further improve the thing.
@@rjfaber1991 correct, at the end of the day, the Quattro was still nothing more than a Group 4 car, a road car modified for rallying, while the competition (most notably the Lancia 037, Peugeot 205 T16 and Lancia Delta S4 and Metro 6R4) where designed with Group B regulations in mind, hell, by 1986, the Quattro was the only car to feature a front engine layout, everyone else had switched to a mid engined layout

Walter Röhrl once said in german Television, he regrets that he won in South Africa, because it would have been such a great story
Röhrl meanwhile said that he wanted Mouton to win nowadays, because the win did not give him anything, but for Michelle, it would have been insane.
I think Röhrl was really depressive all of this time...just like i.e. Mike Tyson in boxing...Mouton was extremely good...however: the worst enemy of Röhrl was not Mouton, but Röhrl.
I'm glad he redeemed himself, those comments he made back then were stupid.

Even though I'm not a woman, Micelle Mouton has always been a huge inspiration to me. She showed that it doesn't matter who you are or where you come from. Anyone has the potential to not only race, but to be one of the best of all time. And I don't mean "for a woman" either. She's one of the greatest drivers ever. Period.
If i remember correctly from an interview with Röhrl, the Problem for him wasn't that Mouton was female but rather that everybody made fun of him BECAUSE she was female and in the Interview he stated that he regrets his behavior and decisions because the Title gave him nothing since he already had one (and even the first one meant nothing for him) while on the other side mouton could have made history.
Maybe that was just publicity talk to the Media but if you know Röhrl you know that he is... special... and that he and Mouton really respected each other.

He drove with many cars, including Ford, Porsche, Opel, Audi, Fiath Abarth, Lancia... this guy is a living legend. He beat Mouton on Audi with an Opel, before he changed to Audi later on. Stiq Blomquist taught Walter to drive Audi and the rest is history. Walter is my personal hero, a total down to earth guy who still attends to Rallye showing off the old B-Group cars.

She was amazing. I remember watching her at Pikes Peak in 85 in the Audi Quattro and she was great. She won and set a lap.record in the process. Sure it was beaten in 86 and then Röhrl beat that one in 87 I think. But she was genuinely so exciting to watch and any guy who wasn't sexist back then was madly in love with her 😂

@@gillesbrault6270 she drove the Sport Quattro at Pikes Peak in 1985. Perhaps you are thinking about the Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 that Mouton used to win the German Rally championship in 1986. Or maybe the Peugeot 405 T16 that Ari Vatanen used to set the pikes peak record in the 1988 event?

Michele Mouton became the first female driver to win a major championship in rallying when she won the German Rally Championship in 1986.
Shes my favourite person ever, such a shame more people dont know about her. She deserves an epic movie

She drove these conditions in group B, the most dangerous form of rally with damn near experimental cars almost too fast for the drivers, along these narrow unpredictable roads.

Agreed. Put any WRC driver in a 2 seat ridealong F1 car and they would be grinning ear to ear. Put any driver on earth in a full send stage in a WRC car in Finland and they would walk out mentally scarred. Look up Ricky Carmichael's ridealong with Ken Block to see the true look of terror.

Mouton was a top talent! I'd love to see Eliška Junková-Khásová getting a video as she was capable of going toe to toe with the best drivers from the 1920s (almost winning the Targa Florio as well) . the soviet Union tried to remove her history but failed as she managed to appear at a Bugatti reunion (might have been Alfa romeo?) against doctors orders as her health was deteriorating,and let the world know of her existence and racing achievements.
She was the first woman to ever win a grand prix and is often credited as one of the first drivers to walk around the course before the event, taking notes on the landmarks and the best racing lines.
She was born before the soviet Union in 1900 and outlived the soviet Union as she passed away in 1994 :D

I first heard of Mouton as a very young kid, religiously watching a 1997 documentary about Group B on VHS called "Too Fast to Race". I still remember the narrator's piece on her dying father's wishes in 1982: "It was her father's wish that she should continue to strive, so strive she did". It's a great documentary (if a little dated); a recommended watch, for sure.
To say a Rally driver isn't a racing driver is like saying a Tank driver isn't a driver; Rally drivers are the best of the best; they have to be.

As a Fittipaldi, then Piquet, then Senna fan, as a fullheartedly awestruck admirer of rally racing and as the stepfather of two wonderful girls, you won my heart. My attention was already caught by the 1st class quality of the content you make, both in factual - as far as I'm aware of, anyway - truth, and in sound, image, pace and everything technical. The cars were definitely iconic, and the rivalry between Mitsubishi and VW fierce, but the routes weren't that inspiring, and they constantly had to contend with locals nicking everything that wasn't bolted down in the bivouacs, and who generally weren't too keen on Dakar being there in the first place.
No, I think Dakar had its golden years in the first few years after going to South America. The terrain became more varied, the local population was actually enthusiastic, it was better in almost every way.
But then of course came 2020 and they decided to move Dakar into the world's most monotonous desert because the Saudis were willing to pay for it... This year was the first in many years that I haven't watched the Dakar on television, and I hope enough people did the same to make the organisers realise that Saudi money isn't worth alienating the event's entire fanbase for.

See, back when i was young... oh so long ago... I used to be a fan of Louise Aitken-Walker. British female rally driver in 1979 who then went on to drive in class C in the BTCC in 1989 and in 1990 became the first ever ladies world champion, and was awarded the Seagrave award that same year. She retired in 1993 to have a family and concentrate on her business. In 2008 she eve took place in the Colin McRae memorial rally event.
Women can't compete with men... pffft... bullsh*t.
L A-W was really decent - as were (at the same time & slightly after) the Simmonite's. People do forget also that Vicki Butler-Henderson was a decent racing driver too (better than her brother anyway!) not to mention Leanne Ferrier (now Leanne Tander, still winning national FFord races in Oz), Kirsten Kolby, all of whom raced against the likes of Webber, Montoya, Button, Kiesa, Wheldon. And of course the brilliant (and never treated as 'a woman') Claudia Hurtgen, and DTM race winner and Truck racer Ellen Lohr, and Dakar Rally winner Jutta Kleinschmidt.
@@OsellaSquadraCorse Ellen Lohr is an absolute superstar to me. About 12 years ago, my then 10 year old daughter had homework assignment about strong women and asked for my help. I couldn't face doing one of the usual subjects, and so as a long time fan of the DTM I suggested Ellen Lohr. Showed her some videos of Ellen absolutely hurling the 190 Evo II around and she was hooked. So we found Ellen's homepage, did some research, and then emailed her with some more questions in my questionable German. Ellen replied a couple of days later with a really long email answering everything, filled in some gaps, some jpeg photos not available on the net, and also posted a goodie bag to my daughter. Absolutely brilliant, and Ellen seemed genuinely delighted some random 10yr old British girl was so interested in her journey.

Women *can* be competitive in motorsport and almost everyone will support a driver as long as he/she is fast. The problem is not enough women wants to join it. Why? Because of social stigma. It's mostly gone, but it's still there. Remove any remaining stigma that society has, and entice and inspire women to venture into the world of motorsport. *Make women passionate about racing*
thats what i was going to say. There aren't enough women enetering motorsports for them to be real competitive. Even if the physical skills aren't a factor, the ammount of people needed to find talent, is just not there. So even tho i don't think that a woman as a disadvantage per se, is really needed a female formula to better up their skills and then think about equal competition. So i do support female formula, but not for the reasons that Carmen tells.
You can't make someone passionate about something. But I support any Individual as long as they are fast, precise, and entertaining.
It's not about stigma. It's not about sexism. Look at how many women have competed in top level motorsports. For every Michele Mouton, there's a hundred Tatiana Calderons. Let's not talk about what could be or what might happen, let's look at what history says. There are inherent biological differences between men and women. I'm not sure about "making women interested in racing" nowadays. We have the internet. That means everybody can search for things they're interested in. If a girl is interested in racing, she'll look for it. Also, a lot of racers today come from families that have that interest. Verstappen's mother is a big ol karting champion. Jos was a F1 driver. Max had a high likelihood of joining the club. If he was a girl, would he be this fast and agressive? Who knows? But he surely would have the same likelyhood of joining the club, not because we kept trying to "manipulate" his future aspirations in life as a society, but because his parents, people he trusted and admired, were on that. I don't think we should try to barge in girls' lives like that. Is it really a problem that we have less females in motorsports anyway? Maybe we should focus as a society in encouraging more healthy choices in life, regarding interpersonal, sexual and socioeconomically for everybody(like, live a better, healthier life), not just "racing for females". More wholesome and altruistic imo

She's very underrated. And he's missed her exploits in Pikes Peak and what she did in the 75 Le Mans in the rain. And she's one of the key reasons behind the quattro legacy.
She was one of the greatest drivers of the Group B era. on par with legends like Rohrl, Kankkunen, Mikkola and co.
I find it a bit strange that Audi ignores her, since she got them their first Title.

I count it as one of my great pleasures to have been personally introduced to Michelle at Rally Australia a few years ago, where myself and 2 of my sons were riding the stages on dirt bikes as mobile security of spectators.
She was still lovely, open and approachable, and chatted with the 3 of us for probably 1/4 of an hour, then finished up signing our rally shirts.
She certainly IS the greatest female driver AND one of the greats, male or female, who mastered the fearsome Group B cars!
I doubt many of the current crop of WRC drivers would be able to come to terms of top-tier pace in a Group B for a full event without all the current driver aid systems.
What an inspirational story, this woman could run circles around Danica any day of the week. Michelle Mouton didn't whine or complain about not getting breaks, she got in the car and drove it no matter what was thrown her way. She got the job done.

King Kacperov she wasn’t tho there’s been female winners across so many forms of motorsport. BTCC, Dakar etc and while no female has really broken out into F1 lella lombardi still got points which counts for something considering the talent she faced. The idea that women can’t compete with men in motorsport especially is just downright false at this point.

One thing barely mentionned when Michelle Mouton is talked about, she was able to compete at high level on dirt and snow when his french collegues were unable to race outside of Tarmac (wich is why we had to wait so long to have a World Champion on rally)
Ive heard of Carmen Jorda's pisstake of an arguement before in Aidan Millward's video, and i wish ive known about Mouton sooner, she seems like a good encouragement for everyone

I remember that season being talked about in The Grand Tour because of Lancia being the only two-wheel drive car to ever win the constructors title in WRC with an interview from Rohrl. Mouton was briefly mentioned in the segment as his rival. I wish they would've talked about her more since the topic of discussion was really interesting. Thankfully, you covered that in this brilliant video! Keep it up mate would love more fascinating short documentaries like this please : )
My dad worked for an Porsche-Audi Dealership in the 70's and 80's. Given the choice between a Porsche 924 or an Audi Quattro for his demo car to drive, he always picked the Quattro. Those things were beast and were fun to drive.
She was one of the top drivers in the Group B World Rally Championship in the 1980's.
Even the top driver of Audi's legendary Quattro rally team.

If you guys aren't familiar with Group B, I highly recommend watching a documentary called ''Too Fast To Race'' here on youtube, just to see how absolutely batshit insane and flat out dangerous this championship was.
We're talking Audi Quattros or Lancia Deltas with 450-500+ PS engines,driving at insane speeds on gravel, mud or snow without any safety regulations. Drivers crashing and getting burned alive, cars crashing into spectators and killing people who came to watch the race, stuff like this was in Group B ''just another Tuesday''.
Niki Lauda once said: ''These guys in Group B are completely insane!'' and also ''Michelle Mouton must be some sort of superwoman,to race in this category and be one of the top drivers.''
Group B became so dangerous, they banned it and even wanted to ban rally racing in general because of it!

Imagine if back in 2007, F1 drivers had said they weren't going to lose to a black driver like Hamilton - that's no different to the knuckle dragging views of those who said they wouldn't lose to a woman.
Röhrl never should have ever had a chance in his car, cause he hadn‘t four wheel drive. For me he is the driver of this season because the Audi was like mercedes in formula 1 today, but Michèle beaten her teammates at audi to proof that your gender hasn‘t anything to do with your ability to drive fast, just my take on this...
She got Röhrl to attend an african event, something he called barbaric (due to temperatures and road conditions).
That alone is huge praise by Röhrl. Muoton also said that Röhrl apologized quickly after that comment and that he was nice to her in person (for his standards, Röhrl is a grouch).
Michele Mouton is the only female driver in the history of elite motorsport to have been a genuine title-contender. I don't think she disproves that gender has anything do with your ability to drive quickly. She is the one exception.

Earlier this year I was one who loved Group B and she is always mentioned.
She isn't a rally legend (but very close), but she is named a lot when talking about Group B. Although, she didn't win the championship and that might be a reason as to why she isn't mentioned as much as the likes of Walter Rohl because Walter Rohl did win, and with a RWD car as well. I will always see her as a legend though

I didn’t know about her rallying (only the results she achieved) but saw her Le Mans effort and it’s unbelievable what she achieved in the wet. Definitely capable of going through the lower formulas as she was clearly a cut above a lot of them
There is a long interview with Röhrl (sadly only in german), where he deeply regrets his statement about Mouton. And he also said that he's sad that she didn't won.
As French, I was watching her on TV when I was young and she made French people really proud because she was such a good pilot as good as male pilot.Thx U so much Michele
Röhl didnt even dare drive in Finnish Rally. Jumps scared him. Michele did not accomplish success in Jyväskylä either, but she WAS at the starting line, and in one year rolled Quattro hard, but still limped to service. We love her for that.
Michele has stronger gonads than many drivers of that golden era of sport. She only drive against: Vatanen, Mikkola, Kankkunen, Röhl, Salonen, Biasion, Alen, Toivonen, Blomqvist, and dozen more "kinda" skilled rally heroes.
