    As someone who has been job hunting now for 3 months, I gotta say your advice is spot on! I have a bachelor's degree in computer science and finished the google certificate back in February, but haven't had any luck even getting an interview with just the personal projects from the course. Through networking though I found someone who was willing to let me design a website for them, so hopefully adding this project to my portfolio will get me better results in my job hunt.
    Edit: Now about 7 months after searching I got my first position as a part time UX designer for a startup. Keep your head up and continue searching and that opportunity will come! good luck to you all.

    Here's my takeaways of doing the Google UX course: 1. it does give the nice and clear process of how people get it work in Google but it is mostly just for Google itself... 2. it does not give a lot related info about how to work with other stakeholders in real. 3. it won't show people any soft skills of working in this field. Currently working on Course 5 and wondering if need to continue the path.

    Hi Aliena! Great advice! is it true that when you take (or finish) the google certificate, they give you like a "job board" access to UX jobs?
    Also, could you please tell more about how UX and Devs work together? That would be very interesting, like knowing what are the deliverables, and what do they expect when you hand them a project. I'm asking this because I'm doing a UX/UI project with a client but he will hire a developer later (which i think that´s wrong) so I haven´t had the opportunity to work with a Dev and I don´t know if the project I´m making will be useful to the developer. Hope this makes sense haha

    • @AlienaCai
      @AlienaCai  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi, I believe there was something like a job board after I finished the certificate. But being honest, I did not rely on that job board at all. Indeed was much more helpful and resourceful in terms of job opportunity.
      I'm so glad that you are doing your client project! And just as you said, there's usually no clear "hand off point" for ux projects. I work with engineers back and forth to iterate on the design to meet engineering constraints. So if you can convince your manager, ask them to bring on an engineer before you sign off so you can do one more round of iteration tailor to engineering need. Elsewise, your manager is your client, just deliver whatever is in their expectation without considering too much about engineering.

    Would you say unsolicited redesigns of apps/websites hold value as a "real-world" project for a portfolio?

    • @athulmk3948
      @athulmk3948 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question.

    • @janvier99899
      @janvier99899 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'm not an "expert" on anything. But I think the redesign of apps/websites could be valuable on your portfolio if you have little to no experience in UI or UX. However, I think it can only be "valuable" and work for your favor if you include the "why" on your design decisions and solves problems; Like, "Did the redesign improve the user's experience?" not just because "this looks cooler". I hope this makes sense.

    • @AlienaCai
      @AlienaCai  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I would consider redesigns as personal projects rather than real world projects. Real world projects should come from actual client with actual need. However, if you communicated with a startup and you frame the project in a way where you are redesigning a website for the startup for free. This can be considered as a real world project. You need to communicate with the stakeholders to meet an actual need and collaborate with their team.

    Hi Aliena, great video!
    I have always been passionate about UI/UX. I got my first job as a Junior Front End Developer a year ago, and have done 2 design projects so far. I found that UI/UX is better for me than coding. But in the beginning of the design phase, we didn't follow any of the design steps for the projects. We just went straight to deisgn the application. Because they just want to design it and develop it quick.
    Now I'm also trying to do the Google UI/UX Certificate, and I'm not sure if this will help me a lot. Right now, I also need to build a Portfolio for my design work. I'm not sure how I'm going to build it since I don't have any design steps for it. Should I continue to go the Google UI Certificate if I already have experience? And can I just make those steps up for my portfolio?
    Any suggestions would help!
    Thank you a lot!

      This is very common for companies that want to build products quick. The short answer is that there's no perfect process for anything so it's fine if you don't think your past projects follow a structured design process. However, it's very likely that the projects still gone through a few rounds of iterations. As long as you can clearly articulate the product, the solution, and how you made design decisions across iterations, it's great to place in your portfolio.

    Hi..Thank you so much for this video. I have a few questions:
    1) I am completely new to this field. Do you reccomend new commers to start directly with UX course?
    2) If not then could you suggest me some courses which could give me a good sneakpeak into the world of designing and help me understand the basics?
    Thank you.

    Thanks for the advise.
    I have completed the Google UX Certification couple of days before.
    I finished in less than 25 days, Before starting the course I have no clue about UI/UX.
    Now searching for entry level job.
    PS: I am a graphic designer by profession, I believe that helped me to learn and understand faster.

      I’m a graphic designer as well and can totally relate. Started the course last year but did only for a day which is less than the entire lesson 1😢
      I want to start again. Is it worth it? Please be honest. Thanks

    Hey, I came across your channel and it's exactly what I was looking for! I'm a graphic designer preparing to take the Google UX course. Question, will the free version of Figma suffice to take the Google course? My company is paying for the program and my boss wants to "keep it budget-friendly" 🙄 I told him I think I could get by with the free version, but wanted to ask your opinion.

    • @AlienaCai

      Hi there, I think the free version of Figma should do the work. You might need to squeeze a few pages together.
      Or else, if you can get an edu email, it shall unlock more features for you.

    why do you choose figma over adobe XD?

    • @AlienaCai
      @AlienaCai  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's no longer a personal choice but rather an industry choice. All the large tech companies, even smaller ones are either already using Figma or converting into Figma.

    I don't think the google certificate Will give you a job. It's very basic and pure theory. Also, they teach you how they make it their way but there's more than that.
    I took a different approach and actually practiced UI/UX as much as I could, filling my portfolio with real and personal projects.

    I finished the course, I got my certificate, I think I even started it because I found your previous video. But, now I'm just struggling to find real life projects I can work on outside of what was done in this course so that I can make something truly impressive for my portfolio. I'm not sure what the answer for it yet it, but if you have any suggestions I'd love to see a video on it. Or a DM.
    EDIT: watching further into the video, I'll check out your Never Eat Alone recommendation
