Exactly. Numbers may lie.. he is a goat. And even if you look at the numbers. He is still one of the greatest. People are just sour he wasn't a home run hitting steroid guy and played for the Yankees.
Hilariously, his fielding percentage is right there with A Rod, Ozzie Smith, Ripken Jr, Larkin... his range was top notch. He had a strong arm. He had great instincts. I never heard a Yankee fan complain about his fielding and i have been surrounded by Yankees fans my entire life and watch this game religiously. It's just an arguement point for those guys that just love to disagree and argue. Just like them saying his OPS+ is bad. Since when do we measure a 2 hole hitter from the 90s and 2000s by their OPS? His entire job was to move runners, slap the ball to right field to give them a chance to score from 2nd, sac flies, singles up the middle, just line drive hitting. Nowadays yall are spoiled by guys like Schwarber, Ohtani, Tatis etc leading off. Those guys 20 or 30 years ago would've been 3 or 4 hole hitters. That's it. Ichiro, Jeter, Gwynn, Boggs, Carew etc were all time greats without having to hit homers. There used to be different meanings of being a great hitter. Now it's just "do you even slug, bro?"
Range has nothing to do with fielding percentage. His range was complete trash. He made 4.04 plays per 9 innings; the average SS made 4.51 per 9. That’s horrifically bad.
All Time Greatest Shortstops: 1. Honus Wagner (By a mile) 2. Cal Ripken 3. Arky Vaughn 4. Alex Rodriguez - If Arod had never used and played his entire career at SS he's probably #2. 5. Ernie Banks - If his knees hadn't cut out after 6 seasons he might be higher 6. Lou Boudreau 7. Luke Appling 8. Ozzie Smith 9. Alan Trammell 10. Barry Larkin and then 11. Pee Wee Reese 12. Derek Jeter I'm sorry but ultimately Jeter's stats just don't measure up. He did everything kind of, but not extremely, well. And he had a long, long career. All of the other players on the list either won MVPs or were clearly the best player in their league at some point (Except Ozzie who's the greatest defensive player in baseball history). Jeter never was, though he had a few decent top five MVP years.
We all know Jeter’s defense wasn’t great, but to be able to play at shortstop his entire career, to make “the flip” to catch Giambi at home, to dive into the stands to make a catch… The guy played hard, for his entire career. There are so many people calling him overrated that I think he’s actually starting to become underrated.
Name another shortstop who consistently put his body on the line like Jeter. Sure, there were lots of errors, poor range… but he tried, every single play.
Gunnar Henderson has a chance to do some shit like this, staying on the same team for that long.. is a scary thought because he’s a Borras client, & if the O’s don’t ink him the Yankees with throw him a blank check. Be a shame to cut that sweet ass hair thought.
Bobby Witt Jr. Is already on his way to doing it. Has 30 hr and 49sb last year (had a 20 hr and 20-plus sb season his rookie year) and is on pace for 20-plus hr and 50 sb this year. And he's hitting over .310 and already has 9 triples and 12 homers and 110 hits not even half way into the season. I'd say both Witt and Henderson could be better than Jeter. And they're both better fielders.
I would really love it if they sold the team to Jeter. Of course the Yankees are WAY more expensive than the Marlins. It would take his entire net worth to buy the same low percentage ownership stake he had in the Marlins. But seeing him as the face of the franchise making the decisions on contracts, that would be awesome.
I'm not trying to take anything away from Jeter, but he played for the Yankees and that gave him the chance to hit in the clutch. Not many players get the chance to come up in those situations. His career was defined by him being able to handle the pressure and succeed in those situations. He played hard and would sacrifice his body to make a catch. Great player who got lucky with the success of his team. He definitely deserved to be in the HOF, but getting a higher percentage than Ken Griffey Jr. completely shows that East coast bias.
Jeter played in 158 playoff games. Griffey JR played in 18 with no rings and never even played in a WS. That is how Jeter had a higher HOF voting percentage.
There will never be another Jeter because: 1. No team will let a below average defensive SS continue to start there for 20 seasons and accumulate "worst ever" numbers. He wasn't even the best SS starting for the team his last several years. 2. Jeter does not put up those numbers on the Royals or White Sox or Rays. He was always on very good to excellent offensive teams where you couldn't pitch around him as much. Less PA = less hits. Multiply that over 20+ seasons and 3465 hits becomes maybe just over 3000. Those teams also would eventually move him off SS (Orioles did w Ripken) and drop him in the lineup. Yankees didn't have to. 3. How is he "captain clutch" when his postseason #'s on teams that usually won their series were in line with regular season #'s? 4. People gloss over the flaws, like his subpar D, but he also struck out a lot and didn't walk an incredible amount...fix that you get on base more, score even more runs. As overall players in overlapping eras: ARod is far superior, even without roids. Ripken and Larkin are better. Nomar was on track to be clearly better but didn't play long enough. What has happened is a very good to all-star level player's career was a bit inflated and extended by playing for a dominant NYY team, with all the hype and attention (which he handled very well). This...by definition...is overrated. Just like Jim Rice, another HOF, is overrated due to the insane help he got on stats by playing in Fenway. Not saying he wasn't good, just not as good as he is made out to be. BTW without the flip, Giambi is out. He is safe either way if he slides.
@@tylers82 he wasn't a liability n he has 5 gold gloves n has some of the most iconic defensive plays in the biggest moments ppl shit on him like he wasn't a 14 time Allstar

Hard to disagree with this title. Setting aside the unlikelihood of seeing another professional player named Derek Jeter... We'll definitely never see another five-time Golden Glove winner go down as, according to all relevant metrics and statistics, the worst defensive player in the history of the sport. He most certainly set that bar at an unachievable height. Great slugger, though.

Gotta watch out for Bobby Witt Jr., too. Henderson will have more homers because he plays with thr tiny homer porch to right field in B--More, but Witt will have more triples and possibly doubles. Probably hits and average, too.

Well, if Alex Rodriguez had remained at SS instead of switching to 3rd because Jeter couldn't make the throw from 3rd, then he arguably would have been the greatest hitting shortstop of all-time. Plus, Rodriguez was a better fielding SS than Jeter.

Jeter is one of the most overrated people in sports. He wasn't near as good as people give him credit for. Defensively, that is. He was a below average player; average at BEST.
Hall of famers are decided by their offense we never really talk about their defense and he did that well in both regular season and playoffs, when u think of best players in baseball u think about offense not defense and he succed and was also clutch so not over rated

All Time Greatest Shortstops:
1. Honus Wagner (By a mile)
2. Cal Ripken
3. Arky Vaughn
4. Alex Rodriguez - If Arod had never used and played his entire career at SS he's probably #2.
5. Ernie Banks - If his knees hadn't cut out after 6 seasons he might be higher
6. Lou Boudreau
7. Luke Appling
8. Ozzie Smith
9. Alan Trammell
10. Barry Larkin
and then
11. Pee Wee Reese
12. Derek Jeter
I'm sorry but ultimately Jeter's stats just don't measure up. He did everything kind of, but not extremely, well. And he had a long, long career. All of the other players on the list either won MVPs or were clearly the best player in their league at some point (Except Ozzie who's the greatest defensive player in baseball history). Jeter never was, though he had a few decent top five MVP years.
We all know Jeter’s defense wasn’t great, but to be able to play at shortstop his entire career, to make “the flip” to catch Giambi at home, to dive into the stands to make a catch…
The guy played hard, for his entire career.
There are so many people calling him overrated that I think he’s actually starting to become underrated.
Defense is what they call overrated. Even the plays you named are average at best
Name another shortstop who consistently put his body on the line like Jeter.
Sure, there were lots of errors, poor range… but he tried, every single play.
@@JosephDalton-xc1iw do you one better. Ss who actually made the plays without having to put his body on the line. Andrelton simmons
@@electrobat1401 Andrelton Simmons was such an underrated player... he was the next Ozzie Smith
There won’t be another Jeter but there now is the judge
No one complained about his defense while he was playing. Just saying
You bugging….core NY’ers always felt this way….shit we are even hip to how he didn’t win his first gold glove until arod left SS
Cuz they just didn't lol
I did
To be fair there were some grumblings when he won some gold gloves so the backlash was there at the time, just not to insane level later on.
When ARod joined the team and Jeter refused to let him play short, tons of people pointed out how much better defensively ARod was.
The greatest captain of all-time. 🐐
# 4 and 15 might have something to say on that.
2nd best offensive shortstop on his own team
great vid enjoyed from kzoo
I would really love it if they sold the team to Jeter. Of course the Yankees are WAY more expensive than the Marlins. It would take his entire net worth to buy the same low percentage ownership stake he had in the Marlins. But seeing him as the face of the franchise making the decisions on contracts, that would be awesome.
He is insane
I like how you add offensive
There will never be another Jeter because:
Notice how it’s says best “offensive” shortstop
Can't wait to see all the 'defensively overrated' comments. I'm not a Jeter lover but to say he wasn't good is insane
