- Sharing knowledge and experience is an important part of law enforcement, the tactical community and hunters. It helps everyone grow and be better. Well, we are here to help out with a few items or must haves for the police officer in the 21st century. Here is my top police everyday carry.
First, you need a good pair of sunglasses. Such as these Gatorz Marauder sunglasses. I have worn these for a year now and they are better than anything else I have worn for patrol use. Secondly, a watch is needed to tell time it keep track of a suspects SFST’s for an OVI or DUI related offense. Timing is imperative with law enforcement.
A good knife could save lives and help you in the field. This Benchmade Triage is well used and has served its purpose for my entire career. It’s punched windows, cut seatbelts and rescued victims from peril. A quality knife for duty use won’t let you don’t and last you an eternity if you care for it and don’t lose it!
Next up, a good handheld light. No not the giant maglite from the console, those suck. I have used two particular lights, a Streamlight Strion HL and now a Cloud Defensive MCH 2.0. The Streamlight served me well for over 8 years and now I am using the all new MCH from Cloud Defensive and it’s unbeatable. So bright and unbeatable. They can save you from worry and shed light on your suspects in the darkest of night or window tints.
Using a tourniquet bracket from Blackbox Customs and Centrifuge Training has been an absolute game changer. If you aren’t carrying a TQ as a police officer, rethink your life. They need to be carried and the TQ bracket allows you to have more belt space and place the TQ in a more advantageous spot for both hands.
The need for a plate carrier and rifle rated plates has never been more apparent. Carry one! This HRT Tactical LBAC carrier is one of the finest on the market and it’s comfort level is unmatched. Pair the plate carrier with the Maximus placard and you have utmost customization for active shooter threats or situations. Many departments skimp on this, so get one if they don’t get you a rifle rated plate carrier. HRT Tactical gear is nice, and definitely worth looking into.
Last, learn how to effectively communicate. People need to know what your thinking and clearly. It will get you a lot further than any training if you can speak your thoughts! If you can communicate all your thoughts into words for those around you, life will be much easier.

As a Marine from 1987-1991. We use the word deployed. As a police officer, 25 years now, we say hired on at a department, not agency?! That be for the FBI, ATF, DEA, CID, CIA, NSA,NIA. AWSOME VIDEO AND EQUIPMENT. MY DEPT. OUT here in Wisconsin we use Barnnie 5 crap. SAFARILAND SAM BROWN BELT WITH LEATHER POUCHES IN BASKET WEAVE OR PLANE BLACK. OUR SWAT TEAM IS WILDER TATICIAL BELTS WITH THE COBRA BUCKLE WITH HIGH SPEED TACO LEO POUCHES.
I don’t work for one of the alphabet agencies but ours does go as an agency. It’s not necessarily unique but there are some things specifically which can go into the definition.
Unfortunately many departments are behind the times with their gear. Ours still uses a Sam Browne with the high gloss finish. Our SRT definitely has the high speed stuff!

I am going on 26 years a a Police Officer in my suburban city here in Wisconsin. I carried my ASP BATON, OC SPRAY, AND MY BACK UP AUTO COLT COMPACT 45 ACP ON MY RIGHT ANKLE FOR 26 YEARS NOW. I CARRY A GERBER TOOL NOTHING ELSE. OFFICERS SHOULD ever carry a knife just a back.up auto on your Ankle.

I love buying EDC gear and I buy top quality stuff but even when I don't need it I'm playing with my gear , My flashlights are the Nebo Redline Blast this thing has get you covered, two intensity , strobe , aircraft aluminum but heavy it's best for search and rescue, my other light I've had 25 years is a Brinkman small belt light , heavy rubber armor and extreme brightness very durable and light weight, the downside to both of these lights are battery consumption but if used as needed they can hold out a while . My watch is a Luminox it gets the job done well. My latest knife is a Tekto that's a nice EDC , Mike I lost my Benchmade! But I'm a knife collector so I have many, a Kershaw Blur is a good choice. My glasses are Costa for hanging out looking good 👍😎 but when it's time to play and work I have my Edge safety glasses, all my glasses are polarize , I get what you pay for I recommend Edge they a tough and very affordable and we can't forget a good keychain. Can confirm. FRAS armor, panel or "plate" is great. Was considering just getting regular plates for inserting into our duty vests we're issued if the need arises... but we don't deal with rifle threats ever here. Would be better fitted for LEOs on patrol, responding to active-thretas, unlike security.

I'd say with the current sentiment towards law enforcement in our country (which is unfortunate). The Body worn camera would be the most important piece of gear a LEO has. Especially since they have to defend themselves in the court of public opinion now as well as a court of law.

I’m a new police officer. I don’t actually start until may 20th, is there any recommendations or online trainings you could recommend that’ll help round out my skill set?
Study case law and use of force case law. Understand the ins and outs of the 4th amendment. Street Cop Training has tons of online stuff which is top notch! check out there online training. For tactical and firearms related, I highly recommend Achilles Heel Tactical. Hope this helps!

What lumen range should I look for in a duty flashlight, what are the lumens on the ones you showed?
1k or more and look for as high as a candela as you can, like something from midlife, Surefire or Cloud Defensive. Streamlight makes damn good products for the price but they are not as powerful

What handcuffs do you prefer to carry on patrol?
I’ve carried Peerless Hinged cuffs my whole career. I prefer them over the chain link style. The ASP cuffs are very nice as well. I think either one of those two brands are great and I would recommend the hinged style, they are more restrictive and you can use the rigidity of them to your advantage during cuffing.

Cloud defensive sucks ass.
Long story short I had a mch hc edc and mch duty. Every light flickered. It's a huge problem in their fb page group. 3 posts daily about their light flickering. Cloud kept sending out tail caps. That was just a bandaid to a bigger design flaw in their lights. 2 months later they would flicker again.
Funny I was on a call clearing a house with 2 other officers. I had to stop and fart arohmd with the duty light to get it to stop flickering. Had to unscrew it take the battery out and fart around to get it to not flicker anymore.
That was the last straw for me. I got all new tail caps and sold the lights off. That's whete I draw the line. Been a flashlight enthusiast for years and none of my other lights do this. Something to do with the battery not making full contact in the light there for the flicker. I believe the batteries are too short. They need to figure their crap out

You can have the most high speed gear in the world but if you do not know how to speak to people you are going to have a long career
