You have opened a very serious door with the Grateful Dead, they are so amazing, so versatile, none have ever been like them none will ever be like them. Way too many songs to even list that were amazing. So much life experience and so much wisdom. Keep going with them this is only one version of what they are. So much more.

Agreed. Their jam sessions were legendary, and the endless shows, and the permitted recordings, and the fluid set lists, and Gerry’s picking, and that amazing, unique sound and catalogue. Arguably the greatest American rock band ever.

@@robertmoraga1501 my teenage years I worked a couple of Dead shows at the Ventura fairgrounds. To say the least that expanded my mind. I maybe didn't understand at the time but I damn sure understand now that I'm older. They definitely influenced a culture unlike any other.

"The Dead arent the best at what they do, they are the only ones who do what they do." They never sound like anyone else. And no matter the song or style they play, they always sound like the Dead...

There are people known as "Deadheads". They really, really love the Dead, I had a roommate that was a Deadhead in the 80s. He recorded every Grateful Dead concert he went to, then he would trade cassette copies to other fans in exchange for their recorded cassettes. He had what I called his Dead Collection, at least 100 cassettes on shelves all labeled with the date and concert venue.

One of my favorite bands of all time. I listen to them every day. Live performances are the way to go with the Dead though. The essence of this band are the live shows.

Great reaction! The Grateful Dead is one of the greatest bands ever! They are very eclectic and virtuoso musicians made famous by their live performances. They toured for thirty years until the death of their lead guitarist, Jerry Garcia (the co-writer and lead vocal of the song you just reacted to). You will enjoy their music very much. Check out more. Some other good introduction
songs are: Truckin', Not Fade Away/ Going Down The Road Feeling Bad, China Cat Sunflower / I Know You Rider, the list is pretty endless! Enjoy and thank you.

The Dead were a huge touring band for decades in the US. Wonderful lyrics with Garcia’s fluid guitar and sweet vocals. Try “scarlet Begonias”. Deadheads love their live recordings which are amazing but their studio work presented the songs in a more concise lyrics forward manner. Many beautiful and rewarding songs to listen too across multiple genres. They drew from many earlier American music styles. One of the best American bands of the era. Best to have a lyric sheet for these. Lyrics can be a bit odd. Thanks for playing the Grateful Dead, great reaction.

100,000! Woohoo. You guys deserve it! Also, with the Dead, forget genres. Just listen to all the members playing their own little parts to make dancing, jamming music. This version is an edited version. The album is cut is a bit longer. “Don’t tell me this town don’t have no heart when I can hear it beat out loud”. One of the hundreds of wonderful lines written by lyricist Robert Hunter.

Welcome to the wonderful world of the Grateful Dead. Although their studio albums are fun, their true nature and spirit was in live performances. As Billy Graham, promoter & owner of Fillmore East & West once said, they aren’t the best at what they do. They’re the ONLY band that does what they do. Try their live LP’s like Skull & Roses, Europe ‘72, Barton Hall ‘77, to get a taste. I’ve been a Deadhead since ‘72, and would recommend a deep dive. And as always, dance respectfully and be kind.✌️❤️🎶

Grateful Dead were best known as a live band. Their studio recordings were basically a starting point for the live performances. My first Dead concert, 9/6/80 Lewiston, Maine, they opened the second set with a 14 minute "Shakedown Street" that let me know things were going to be different. At Grateful Dead concerts the scene before and after the show in the parking lot was almost as fun as the shows themselves. The vending area eventually became known as Shakedown Street. Here are a few more songs to check out: "U.S. Blues", "China Cat Sunflower>Fire On The Mountain", "Deal", "One More Saturday Night", "Help On The Way>Slipknot>Franklin's Tower", "That's It For (The Other One)", "Box Of Rain" and "Cumberland Blues". Only about 450 more to go. Enjoy, and welcome aboard the bus.

Oops, it should have been "China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider", which you just did, and then "Scarlet Begonias>Fire On The Mountain". Got them crossed up. My bad.

You're nearly there on the bus. First was the lovely Playing For Change cover of Ripple, now a studio version of a song by the actual band. You need to react to them playing live. There are lots of videos on TH-cam and elsewhere and all sorts of recordings on the internet. Plus, the Dead allowed and encouraged us to record them playing in concert.

It's been upper middle class for decades and when the guys grew up. Now you have to be wealthy to live there with an average home price of $3.4 million.

This song is not representative of the Grateful Dead's sound, no other song of theirs sounds like this. Disco was very popular at the time and many rock bands were coming out with songs with a 4/4 disco beat including The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Rod Stewart , Queen and David Bowie.

Sorry, this is a Dead classic and there is no one "Dead sound";) Yes it's distinctly disco, you're going to hear reggae, blues, fusion/jazz, their own weird acid and space jam, country western/folk/bluegrass, Buddy Holly rock and roll. They recorded a very disco Dancin in the Streets. NO boundaries...

There is no box to put Dead songs in, individually or as a portfolio. Their goal was creativity, spontaneity, and the high platform dive into a damp towel in search of magic moments. A 'shake down is a mostly gentle rip off...dirty cops shake down pimps and dealers for a cut of their profits, gangs and the mob shake down businesses for "protection", there is an implied sad outcome if they don't get their cut of course. Shakedown Street is the shady side of town, seedy, unkempt, obviously poor, but as Jerry sings, "Don't tell me this town don't have no heart, when I can hear it beat out loud";)
