Both Esther and Claudia were the most sincere reading as they read from real emotions of the times when minorites were really struggling. You can feel that even as actresses the lines were read from personal experience. They are both equally amazing to me as I got teary eyed watching both performances.

I've only seen the version with Physicia Rashad. That was my first time ever hearing about A Raisin In The Sun. I will have to watch the others. But I love Phylicia Rashad in her role she played in A Raisin In The Sun.
I honestly can't pick a favorite -- they were all phenomenal. McNeil was commanding and theatrical in the best sense of the word. Rolle -- a truly underrated and gifted artist -- gave a characteristically forceful performance (I always loved her beautiful, rich voice). And Rashad imbued her scene with a heartfelt emotionalism that was simply stunning.
Rashad was like Meryl Streep, perfect, but beautiful and knowing it, and knowing she was playing unbeautiful while being beautiful. She got far from herself in it, she is a top actress.
For me it was Esther Rolle. The way she raises and lowers the volume of her voice, the way she pauses after certain words and phrases, and how she adds emphasis to certain words as well. For example when she said "When ya starts to measure somebody, measure 'em right child.... Measure 'em right!". This moved me to tears.

I think it is partly due to it being a movie, where Esther was in a television production, and Phylicia was doing theater acting for the camera. Different techniques. Claudia did high drama, Esther did simple and real, and Phylicia was feeling like crazy. She was the only one to avoid any churchiness. But differences in how the other actresses listened! Diana Sands was a gem, died far too soon.

Claudia McNeil is so commanding as Mama it's almost scary!!! I thought she was going to reach for a belt if Benetha didn't act accordingly lol. That said, no one IMO beats Ester Rolls' performance. She brings a certain warmth and dignity to the role!

People need to remember that the director is partially responsible for how the actors are delivering their roles in the act. The first director may have wanted her to be frustrated. The second may have wanted Esther to be gentle in her approach. You can't compare them with this.

All of these women are absolutely divine. But Phylicia Rashad in my opinion, said those words and played that role with the most grace, passion and authenticity. She didn't sound or look like she was speaking from a script, but like she was speaking from experience. The tears in her eyes, her facial expressions, timing and phrasing all indicate that she was coming from a very real place. Phylicia is the only one that says "U ain't done learnin'" And every time I hear it, I'm cut to the core because I feel like she's speaking directly to me. My eyes swell up every time I see and hear her speak those words in that magical moment.
I like all three performances. They all took a different take on who they felt this woman was a all did a great job. There is no comparison in this situation. This character is played in all of these time zones, and in 2008 this character wouldn't have been believable if she were played the same way she was play in 1961, and 1989.

She basically was just reading lines from a script instead of becoming one with the character. When Phylicia was expressing the pain of watching her character's husband work himself to death. Only to have his son just hand the money over to a commen ghetto thief i felt absolutely nothing. Esther Rolle was the best she understood the character and gave an amazing performance.

Dam, I’m so sick of the brain washing of women to be self sacrificial. I’m ready for a new message one of equally and self love as women. This role showed a man emotionally unstable and held the whole house hostage with his up and down emotions. Acted a fool until he got what he wanted then the women tip toed around him, then he messed up everything and was mad at the very women who loved and supported him, just weak! I’m just ready for a new message. They beat God into us then they showed the mother trying to slap her woke daughter back to sleep for speaking the truth. Well I guess now they don’t have to whip us no more into submission cuz we’re doing it to ourselves. New message please!!!
