    The thing about Swedish, is that it's a fox dressed as a sheep dressed as a fox. The first layer, to anyone not familiar with learning foreign languages, is difficult. In Swedish, there is no difference in conjugation for the various groups of people a verb relates to. In English, he runs, I run, they run, etc. In German, Ich laufe, du läufst, er lauft. In Swedish, jag springer, han springer, ni springer, etc.
    Then, the next layer is easy. The conjugation is simpler than English, the spelling makes more sense than English, and the pronunciation is just a bit difficult. I think when people say Swedish is a category one language, this is where they end.
    But then comes the final layer. The fiendishly hard one, where the differences between a native speaker and a second language learner become painfully apparent. The things that are almost right but hit the uncanny valley. Where the speaker understands that jag is pronounced more like "yah", which was a very Swedish adaptation to allow faster speech, while leaving a small gap between it and the next word. Or when a speaker pronounces Sverige as "Sve -ri- ye" with distinct syllables, instead of "Sveryeh".
    And then there's the emphasis. There's no wrong emphAsis on the wrong syllAble, because there's emphasis on every syllable, which is really hard for people who speak any reasonable languages.

    Not really a fair challenge tbh.

    I want to hear more of that song about the streets of Stockholm (Stockholms gator). I always thought the way the Skånsk pronounce the word “gå“ sounds exactly the way the English say “go“. The rest of Sweden pronounces it roughly the way the Americans say it.

    I'm British and English is my first language but I've been learning Swedish for 11 ish months and I love it. So earlier, my friend wanted to say I hate (insert name of person she hates) in Swedish so basically no one would understand her. So I told her 'jag hatar (insert name of person she hates) and then she tried to repeat it. She said 'ig heter (insert name of person she hates). I don't know how she got ig and heter is the verb to be called or something like that. She got there eventually but it's amazing how hard repeating a language you don't know is.

    • @bethm6401
      @bethm6401 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      rosie23xx it might just be because I know a bit of swedish, but hatar is quite like hate and when your name comes after it... Idk I just think the person your friend hates might get the jist of what you're saying

      Because every time someone thinks of a guy from Sweden they all think, "His name must be Sven if he's from Sweden." So, the funny opening line is saying, "Hey I'm not Sven my name is Martin."
