      @@VOKZEL "No form of art is concrete" This is true, with a massive caveat. I think what people have a problem with is how art fundamentals are more or less concrete, and an artists ignorance on the topic, whether intentional or not, is what annoys people. I'm not going to look at someone's shit drawing of an anime character and say, "I'll let that pass, because it's obvious they are trying", spoiler alert, drawing anime usually means that A. you lack fundamentals, B. you aren't even trying, C. you might be an indulgent degenerate.
      It's fine to be indulgent, like with my anime example, but when someone calls you out on it, the last thing you should say is, "it's my art style!", because it most likely isn't. I should know, I used to be one of those kids who drew anime, and that time spent drawing anime proved to be detrimental to my development as an artist in the long run.

      @grimrose999 6 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      Yes the basics are important. I had an art teacher who once we finished learning the basics of anatomy and completed our assignments would let us work in any different style or art medium. She even let me submit work digitally or traditionally. I even learned a bit about animation in her class. Other students didn't bother trying anything at all and either failed or had horrible grades despite her being one of the few teachers I had who marked assignments based on how much effort the student put forth instead of what style or medium they used as an artist.

      @KUYAMIN 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      yeah, i agree! i've always had an anime art style but lately i've been doing more (western) cartoonish and also a bit of realism. i also think it's important not to confine yourself or any artist to just one style! you can do things with one style that you couldn't do with the other, and part of being an artist in my opinion is expressing yourself and/or your ideas in whatever way you want!

    • @grimrose999
      @grimrose999 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's also okay to use a different style when using different mediums. I always use a different style when animating compared to digital art or traditional art. Sometimes you may have to alter your style to fit the situation. (or your client's vision, if you are doing art commissions)

    An art style is an abstraction of realism. The saying "You have to know the rules before you can break them" applies here. Your style is defined by the details you focus on, and the details you choose to leave out, all in order to get your desired effect. Every cartoon creator and popular artist has learned realism at one point, because that's how you learn the fundamentals of art.

You brain realizes how the body is shaped and structured through repeated practice and efforts. Even if you claim that you can't achieve realism, you are slowly but surely incorporating it in your art, though simply modifying to fit your style. Most anime artists start off with wonky proportions and lackluster body shape, but as they reference the appearance of the body, they learn to modify the actual appearance of the body to fit the style without looking distorted. It's one of the simple ways to tell a good artist from a lackluster one.

I recomend having a darker colour so it fits the rest of the line-art since that's darker." their reply was "It's just my style" then later they decided to delete my comment and their own comment. Two ways to get an artstyle:
    1. Blood sacrifice your mom and open up the key inside your soul for your own artstyle to come out
    2. Steal someone else's and soon it will morph into your own

    Art styles have become more important to people than they actually should be. Art styles are needed when creating a comic or cartoon show. I think they are developed as the artist develops.

    the handwriting analogy actually works really well. messed up anatomy isnt an art style because its like how you have to learn to write each letter before you can make you handwriting pretty if that makes sense.

    I honestly am so tired of hearing the word “style”, and I don’t think it’s healthy for new artists to dwell on it so much. Just draw what feels natural to you at first and maybe make more personalized choices later, but I think it’s more important to understand proper proportions and anatomy than to focus on just having it look “unique”. Trust me, if you spend enough time drawing, it’ll begin to look unique on its own.

    imo you can't "find" an art style. you develop it during your art journey by trying different things and looking at your favourite artists' art and TAKING INSPIRATION (do not copy,jesus pls) from their art and applying the things u like the most to your own art. just keep practicing and you'll notice both improvement and consistency to show!!

    • @dewybunny
      @dewybunny 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Alfonso Razo you're kinda right! practice won't do any good if you're practicing something wrong for the whole time. that's why it's also important to do real life studies and use references~ and about the inspirstion thing, there are many things you can get inspired by! you would be surprised what can actually bring you various ideas, that's why it's good to always carry something where you can write those ideas down ^^ i don't think anyone leaves their house without their phone nowadays, so it will be easy to write down ideas as soon as they come~ one of my favourite artists said "you know the saying "think outside the box"? bullshit. there is no box. you're on an open field, with ideas floating all around you. and you have a butterfly net! you just have to catch those ideas before they float away" and i couldn't agree more ^^

      Kibitzer ah sorry for not making things clear^^ of course i meant not to steal other people's artwork and claim it as your own, but also - copying art and/or styles may be beneficial to the artist, but only to a certain extent. every single artist is still improving, no matter how good they are, and if you choose someone who's still in the learning process then you'll most probably make the same mistakes they do. i think learning from real life things is better ^^ of course, i can't say it's easier, but it certainly helps you notice the mistakes faster.

      I used to trace coloring books pages when I was in first grade cause I liked the art, but I did that twice. I then started to *really* get into art when I was in third grade. I practiced nearly everyday, and looked up TH-cam tutorials, and I started getting better. I would look up cute pictures on Google. My current art style is a mixture of semi-realism and anime. I'm proud that I can say that I'm self taught, and even prouder that I stuck to something so complicated. Even with all of that I'm still learning and practicing. Of course I don't like my art style much, but I'm working to improve it! 🤓

    I loved your points on art styles.
    I do think that a lot of entitled artists think that mistakes in their art is just their art style which is just an excuse unless it was intentionally done that way.
    I think artists nowadays are more entitled and stuck up when it comes to art styles and their art in general because a lot of them deem actual constructive criticism as a personal attack (I've had this happen to me once with a popular artist on Instagram not too long ago and two of her fans and boyfriend were awfully rude to me over it. She lost a fan that day). And I'm not saying all artists are like this but a lot of them are and I think artists need more thick skin and be more professional over their work than be overly sensitive about it.

    I like that handwriting analogy, the more you write/draw the more likely your style's gonna change. If you make a deliberate choice to make your handwriting neat, the better looking it will be. It's the same with art, no matter what you gotta make a deliberate choice.

    For everyone who draws in the Powerpuff Girl art style, that’s perfectly fine, but the big eyes and fingerless hands are not actually stylistic choice. The Powerpuff Girls actually look like that compared to normal humans because of how they were made in the guy’s basement.

    Some of the biggest leaps I took in my personal style were usually born out of re-investigating the elements of design. I would look at art from artists long-dead and would churn out stuff completely different from their's but sometimes I would utilize a color theory or shape consistency from pieces I enjoyed. I got pieces that got me A's and that I was proud of. My worst work is usually work rushed within a day or two after browsing a couple Google image searches. Maybe this doesn't work for everyone, but I found tremendous benefit in studying from a group of artists from different time periods and regions.
