It's so hard to publicly admit mistakes and be raw about money in particular. This was a fantastic video and I think should be encouraging to anyone who wakes up at night worrying about their debt. Thank you!!!
Veda, I really love how transparent you and your husband are with your budget. It just feels really real and raw and a lot of these cash stuffing videos feel "stuffy" to me lol no pun intended. It just feels like people are either hiding the fact that parents/partners are giving them money or there's some other income flow that we aren't really getting the full picture. Which is fine, I mean I respect the privacy. But I just think it's refreshing to hear someone talk about money in a very authentic, non-fabricated way. It's also rare to see the husbands/partners actively be participants of the video. And I really love his nobullshit commentary.
this was SO sweet and thoughtful of you to say- and i appreciate more than you know! i just don’t see the point in hiding the important stuff. i want people to NOT do what we’ve done in the past so they don’t have to do what we’re doing now to undo it. the only way to encourage that is to be real with it, you know?
Our family was also going to be effected by the shutdown due to my husband job and literally at the last hour I was budgeting what we needed to do to have money moved from emergency, savings etc to cover the bills. I am just starting my debt free journey so I’ve been throwing thousands of dollars to pay down debt and this was my wake-up call to save some and still pay debt, I don’t ever want to worry about how we will handle the bills. Luckily I had just paid off my car so a huge bill is gone. Hopefully this will not be an issue in November.
My husband was in the military for 20 years and every time a possible government shutdown was announced it was always a very stressful time for us. I’m glad they came to an agreement and pray that it gets resolved come November.
Congratulations on that massive accomplishment toward your debt payoff! That is fantastic!!! I didn’t hear a target date for your total payoff, but at this rate, you’ll be done by the end of next year-possibly sooner!👏🏻 We became debt-free in April of 2022, but, we are older and winding down to retirement (we’re both partially retired now). You are way ahead of the game! Definitely cheering you on!🎉
My Dad was also a federal employee before he retired and I have watched this happen so much in my lifetime, and it is so irritating. I can relate to you all so much on this level not for myself but I truly understand how frustrating it is. Thankfully, like you said it usually works out but it is nerve racking doing the waiting game. Prayers for you all and hoping everything works out in November as well.
thank you so very much. seeing my comments full of people in the same boat makes me so angry. these jokers don’t deserve their roles or their paychecks.
I have to say…one of my favourite videos of yours. I think because it really shows the two of you as a team. How you and your husband break down your decisions and plan for whatever happens. Love the little insight into your lives - whether you show more of your life - we enjoy it whatever you share. Also, have you watched spaceballs?? 😂
Congratulations! You guys are really focussed and you can do this for sure. It was also interesting learning about the shutdown as someone from England. We had bits and pieces in the news about it but I never read it in detail as we have our own government in shambles but great to learn from you guys!
I am so inspired by your debt journey. I love that you can be so transparent with your finances. We are a household of 6 living in ny and feel like we can’t get ahead. Some of your tips to paying off debt as well as how you breakdown your monthly income is so helpful and gives me a great sense of hope. Thank you for sharing
oh girl, i feel you. i lived in ny not that long ago and it’s pricey. take heart- closely paying attention to your finances actually helps you bring order to what can feel stressful and overwhelming. you can do it!
What an awesome accomplishment, been looking forward to this video!! But also very stressful for the last month. Glad you had all those sinking funds to fall back on if necessary.
I'm so glad everything worked out for you with the stress over the possible government shutdown. This was such a fun update, and so exciting to see how much of an impact you've made on your debts! (And as always, love it when Mr. SB can join in on the fun!) Can't wait to see where the end of the year takes you. xx
ooh great question!!!!!! the credit card! the interest keeps going up, so we’re gonna knock it out so they don’t get any more money from us than necessary.
So happy for you and your family!! You’ll knock this out in no time!! I bet by next year this time or sooner! 🤞🏻 Congrats!! 🎉praying for no shut down in Nov for you!
What a great debt update!! Congratulations to you both for knocking that much out! Understandably tackling debt is important, but after this update and the circumstances around it have you all talked about creating a new envelope to start preparing for any other possible government hissy-fits, or would that be something you would rather consider covering with an emergency fund in the future? Like it would be just strictly to cover the two to three paychecks your husband wouldn't receive so that way then you could use the rest of your envelopes as a last resort if it extends beyond what you thought and not interfere with christmas?
thank you so much and that’s a great question!!! our plan for now is to just pay our minimum $300 on our credit card and put the rest of our “debt payment” for the next couple months in our high yield savings. we have other options available as well, so that we don’t have to tap into christmas!!!
Thank you so much for letting us know what you were facing. Having SINKING (Basic) FUNDS is Dave Ramsey. Having 50 sinking funds isn’t Dave Ramsey. Congratulations. A job well done. We are BS7 so I truly appreciate your excitement about your progress.
Thank you for showing all the ups and down of budgeting. Congratulations on paying off your car, I’m so excited to finish mine by December. You guys are half way thru the debt two more to tackle. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Not a government employee, but work for a non-profit dependent on federal funding. So we have some things in place to be able to run for a while, my program maybe longer than others, but I remember 2018 when there was significant discussion that we may be getting to the end of that. So not immediately losing a check, but absolutely empathize with the process. Hope they get their shtuff together soon. ❤
My husband was laid off in June from a job he has been at 20 years we live in San Diego and the struggle for him to find new employment is so hard right now and he did get a severance package that will run out at the end of November so this is very scary for us and I’m already thinking about getting a part time job after my reg 40 hour a week job and then we have a special needs child on top of all of that
Date night! When the time comes will you guys show the debt payoff of your house or is that something you’ll keep private or even not work towards as aggressively. These debt payoff videos are my favorite.
Hello, look what you've done, you have done really well getting the numbers down, amazing! Yay for the car! 🚙 How frustrating to have the government situation, how stressful. I live in the UK so not under that situation, if the gov did shut down would workers still be expected to work and would you get back pay? Also I have gone back to your very first videos and will be watching more to get this firmly in my head. Have a great week take care 💖💸💰
thank you so much for watching!!!! essential workers have to keep working and are guaranteed back pay. non-essential workers are basically furloughed and are not guaranteed back pay.
We had to worry about the shutdown too. We are a single income family with my husband being in the navy. Normally we could last a bit but we just had a baby and spent some money for baby, hospital bills, and getting ready for his deployment. Not fun, so glad they pushed it off
My hubs was laid off his project due to the lack of budget. His project is way over the budget that was approved. He already has a new job but we now are back to traveling with the IBEW. I know the feeling he was home for 3 weeks so we ran thru our PTO envelope but made it. The fact our government can never have a clean budget that will pass is infuriating
There is no law anywhere that gives the federal government the right to take taxes, to punish anyone from not paying taxes. The IRS is illegally operating but neither side wants to discuss that.
If there is a shutdown, would he get the paychecks afterwards? So say that he wouldn't get 2 paychecks, would he get them after they have come to an agreement? The whole thing is just so strange to me as a European. I'm glad though that there wasn't a shutdown in October. Yaaaaaaaayyyyy 🎉🎉🎉🎉!!! 2!! You should have a sheet where you can see the total debt, so that you can see the total progress that you've made. It's the sheet I like the most from the ones I have.
essential employees have to keep working and are guaranteed pay after the shutdown is over. non-essential employees are basically furloughed and are not guaranteed back pay since they weren’t working- but in the past- they’ve been paid as well. i do need to add a total to my debt sheets!!!
OMG! That is amazing 🎉🎉🎉 That's a huge achievement. The whole government thing blows my mind. Thank you for explaining it. It must be a worry for alot of people knowing that it will happen every year. Is it something that you will stuff for in the future so you have the money there to cover it without having to use other sinking fund money?
once we pay off our debt, we’re going to save our 6 month emergency fund just as aggressively as we’ve paid off our debt. in the meantime, for oct and nov, we’re paying our minimums on debt and putting the rest in our high yield savings for when it shuts down in november.
I am so honored by your vulnerability in sharing your personal side of this story. It's infuriating that the people in Washington can "wager" with working people's livelihoods.
Wow what a stressful situation you are in and it’s not done. So glad your car loan is gone!!!!! In the debt free future you can have 3 months of savings to weather these government shutdowns. We are rooting for you. ❤❤❤
it’s no fun, but i’m so grateful we started this when we did so we had some sinking funds to lean on if need be! but you’re SO right about that big emergency fund! cant wait for that!!!
Hi Great video. You do not have to share all of your personal info here. What you share is enough to motivate us out here. Thank you for sharing your progress. ❤❤❤❤❤
I also have friends working for the government and in your situation. My suggestion is not to show your hubby’s face. Certain things should be kept to yourselves. I work for the state and living on a bi-weekly paycheck with a mortgage is NOT easy. I am starting my budgeting journey now, as I had a flooding in my basement and my insurance company would not cover a dime. My son paid for a new hot water heater and now we need a new sump pump and the oil heating unit is fried. I’m NOT happy.

I am so sorry you have had this stress. As a European it baffles me how your government operates. Ours certainly is not better, a complete mess to be honoust, but not paying government workers would never happen here. I hope the next few months won't be as bad as you are fearing.

About the people … who pay their salaries 😂we will be done come June 2024 ! Glenda
It is so unfair that all the people like your husband have to worry about getting their checks cut, but congress still gets theirs. Congratulations on your debt payoff progress.
I'm also a federal employee...I work for VBA and even w a shutdown we still have funding for 2 wks after a shutdown so basically one more paycheck.. 😔 and I'm going on maternity leave next week which also sucks so I have to pay close attention to what's happening next month and save appropriately w my husband's income
I love you guys so darn much!! My favoritest people ever! Damn blood sucking leeches.. The amount of inspiration/motivation from you and Mr is indescribable. 🖤🩶🤍🖤🩶🤍
Yep, nailed it... They still get a paycheck. I say if it shuts down, so should their paychecks. It's craziness.
amen to that. cant even wrap my head around them getting paid while stopping the pay of others.

I understand the turmoil - I'm a fed gov. employee (a relatively new one) and felt in limbo. Let's hope they get it together in Nov....
ugh. so sorry :(
great video and great progress, well done

I crackle about how dorky you are, when your bestie is sitting beside you 😂
a pretty big dork 😆
Not really budget related, but I’m looking to purchase my first wireless printer for my home office.
