Yo! This is the best description on how to use this product successfully that I have seen so far. Thank you for explaining the functions and how to get quick results. I didn’t even know that if you double click the enter button when hovering over an effect you get a display of all of the parameters of that effect. Thanks man!

I have the OG HD500, I bought it like a week before the 500x came out. My lead tone is based on a Mesa Boogie Mark IV, and it is just tickling the DSP limit....and it sounds absolutely KILLER
That preset is: Crybaby, Red Compressor (signal split) upper path has a Blackface model & 412 Recto, lower path has a Screamer, Rectifier model & 412 Recto cab w/57 and 421, Studio EQ, (signal rejoin) Hall reverb, Digital Delay. I also have it so if I hit the top left foot switch, the wah turns off and the expression pedal becomes a volume pedal for those violin type bow tones that sound incredible in stereo.
If you're familiar with Boogie Mark Series heads, you'll know that the best ones have a 5 band EQ (80, 240, 750, 2200, 6600Hz). You also know what kind of lead tones (and rhythm) tones these monsters can deliver. What you might not know, is that the clean signal from channel 1 is always present in the power section. Meaning, when you switch to channel 3, you're hearing both channels. Listen REAL carefully, it's there...it's part of the secret sauce that gives these amps their amazing clarity and tightness. Notice that my signal chain has both of these factors accounted for. Just like a real Mark Amp, I run the bass close to ZERO, same with the presence knob. I highly suggest giving it a shot, I got a Petrucci worthy lead and rhythm tone out of mine. Haha, only took like 5 years to master the thing. Bonus points for doing it all from the front panel like a boss.
Worth noting, I saved that preset 2 more times and switched the wah out for a Phase 90 and a Jet Flanger. The reverbs are what suck up the DSP the most, followed by the models....speaking of reverb, try throwing an unstable particle verb on a volume swell patch in stereo with a stereo delay at 250/500ms.
You can make some incredible tones with this thing. I use mine on a daily basis to this day and still tweak it some days.
The Good: VERY good amp modeling, well done FX, great I/O on the panel, the cost, AMAZING TONES
The bad: Cab modelling is PATHETIC compared to modern IRs, not the most plug n play 😂...factory presets are pretty much unusable, you HAVE to learn the unit thoroughly to make it sound great, not the most robust piece of kit ever, the master volume "pot" is not an analog pot...meaning the output is controlled digitally. I gave up trying to get all the gain staging and levels right for 4 cable method, but YMMV. Lastly, it is a bit dated... the monochrome LCD and the USB editor aren't even close to Axe Edit, but rest assured this thing can sound phenomenal when it's all sorted out.
Bottom line: A true hidden gem at $200, but be prepared that it's gonna take a bit of tweaking to fit into your rig, especially with more traditional signal path. I HIGHLY suggest running it in Studio Direct Mode at line level to a decent FX loop of a tube head with real guitar cabs...I even keep the 'cab modelling' on 🤯

I am trying to get a Megadeth "Peace Sells" era tone. Looking for that chunk for the thrash galloping. My line 6 amp straight no effects honestly sounds better as it provides that chunk. Just got it so playing with it like a blind man. I have no clue what I am doing only that my line 6 amp sounds better for now.

Hi Jon, cool video. My friend has just given me this POD and an old guitar of his as I’m starting to learn, plus I’ve just bought myself a Fender Champion 20 amp. All of these guitar effects and a lot of the details you spoke of in this video are very new to me, can you recommend any videos or advice of any kind that might help me understand these effects, their functions or anything you think might be relevant to learning guitar effects, would be great.

Hi Jon, thanks for the video. I am just buying a 500 today. For $150 ! How about that..? A good deal? I never used one before and usually playing fingerstyle acoustic stuff. But want to add some flavor to the music I do. This seems like it would be fun to play with. Nice review of the unit. and comparison to the X model. So I'm good with the HD500 as is... Thank you

Hey Jon, I just started watching your videos and been loving them lately. I know it may be a long shot, but you think in the future you can do Line 6 Helix videos? Would definitely be excited to see what you can do with the Helix and also teach us how to use it, since not a lot of people really walk you through all those effects and amps like you do. Kind regards.

If you have an HD500 (or other POD) and you run it through traditional guitar gear, (like say an FX loop of a tube amp) go to the global settings and set the output mode to STUDIO DIRECT.
Lightbulb moment. Or have fun with the 'Stack' output mode (like you're supposed to 😂 according to Line 6) and good luck with that sizzle

Another difference between the 500/500x has to do with Variax. The 500x will not recognize legacy Variax guitars/basses. i.e. 300,600,700 will not work on the 500x. The 500 is "highest" you can go for the old Variax's.
