- ORF Neighbourhood Scope | The Indian Ocean, traditionally seen as India's sphere of influence, has witnessed an increase in the presence of regional and extra-regional powers in recent years. Smaller island and littoral South Asian countries like Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives, which remained at the periphery of great power politics, are witnessing a multi-polar power contestation as the Indo-Pacific region grows in prominence. India is keen to maintain its sway in the region even as China continues to make inroads with its assertiveness, deep pockets, and opaque lending. QUAD partners - the USA, Japan, and Australia and countries like Turkiye, Russia, and France are quickly catching up with this evolving great game. On their part, the South Asian countries are leveraging their geographical location and growing importance to further their interests, economic and security goals, and development partnerships.
How does the Indian Ocean fit into the broader evolving geopolitics of the Indo-Pacific? Who are the new players in the region? How is India responding to these new players and the evolving competition? What do South Asian countries like - Bangladesh, Maldives, and Sri Lanka - think of this contestation? How are they responding? How do these countries perceive China’s presence in the region? What would the Indian Ocean Region look like in the coming years?
This event was part of the series “The Neighbourhood Scope,” a monthly feature of the Strategic Studies Programme that intends to rekindle key conversations, questions, and debates concerning India’s neighbourhood.

I think India should rethink about Neighbourhood first policy.. freelunch must be checked
No to akhand Bharat! they are alienating neighbors
Indian Govt. needs to introspect on the approach to these countries. India is too nice. If you always act positively and there is no downside to anti-India politics, there should be no surprise that this is how they will act, especially as it will make China happy. China, after all, must be courted and kept happy for the sake of future big bucks.
india had bullying those nations, and that is why they are turning to china.
…whereas Israel wants to erase Palestinians, India has for decades, used assimilation as a tactic to control Kashmir. Now it is a lot more open to erasing Kashmiris”.
Audio is way better than Chatham House where Samir Saran spoke last week
I wonder if ChathamHouse audio quality varies in relation who is speaking, what is said, to prevent any clips going viral, for national security reasons of course
Sareen saab on FIRE today! 🔥🔥🔥
This is a very candid discussion. So unexpected. Usually, these discussions are so diplomatic, and we have to struggle to read between the lines... this openness is sooo refreshing
Amazing maturity from some of the youngsters in the conversation! promising!
It would be good if South Asian countries would observe how the 5 eye countries look out for each other and their interests. South Asia needs to think about it!
Bharatiya/ indian subcontinent countries..there is no such thing as south asian countries.
Best if India tries to get a South Asia think tank that supports the goals of the region. So far it seems others are easily able to break up what is in the national interests of all these countries...Bangladesh, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet where Nehru dropped the ball! What is the point of India helping them when they choose to take easy money for development with the loss of sovereignty and then India has to bail them out!!
Srilanka - interesting story about Srilanka leading the port & special economic zone development. I wonder if the European business cult were involved (same climate cartel which 'inspired' Srilanka to pen the article saying that going organic would make their farmers instant millionaires - the opposite happened), but pulled out, leaving China exposed.
South Asia country interest more common than different; work together grow together
Maldives has the population equal to Kolhapur, 515132! Sushant, you can't ask that question!
These guest are very well educated. Not parrots that you usually see. Excellent thinking people.
I see Sushant Sareen, I hit like 👍 Simple!
Washington Post The New Alliance Between India and Israel”, published in February 2023 wrote on October 11, this year in an article: “Over the past decade, India and Israel have grown increasingly closer as partners and allies…Ties have blossomed under [Indian] Prime Minister’s Narendra Modi and [Israeli Prime Minister] Benjamin Netanyahu, with India and Israel using similar tactics in the occupied territories of Kashmir and the Palestinian territories…seizing lands, displacing people, criminalising dissent, muzzling journalists, and controlling people’s movements…Zionism and Hindutva [Hindu Nationalism] in controlling Palestine and Kashmir…whereas Israel wants to erase Palestinians, India has for decades, used assimilation as a tactic to control Kashmir. Now it is a lot more open to erasing Kashmiris”.
Very well said! EAM star gazer, Dr Jaishankarji, is a faithful disciple of his hallucinating boss and BHARAT'S FOREIGN POLICY - make enemies of your neighbors and affiliate with declining POWERS.
in both israel and india, Jihadis(Muslim nationalists, eg- isis, al qaeeda) are suppressing minorities and and make a muslim only state.
@@antonyfrancis3247 Islamic supremacists are invaders in kashmir. Islam never existed in kashmir. There were 20% hindus in kashmir in 1947, in 2024 most kashmiri hindus have been genocided. Political consideration / one President was the main reason Srilanka pushed for Hambantota port.
Where is the long term benefit to small South Asian countries when India is their closest neighbour in any emergencies. How does a weak alliance with India help any of these countries?
Long Term: For long term civilizations come and go. Next civilizations will come and it will go.
Think about civilizations. Why are Indians still following what they are in the sky. How it changes , what's the matter to change.

The targeting of minorities - particularly Muslims - by right-wing Hindu extremists is now a way of life in many states. Vigilante mobs, which often assemble provocatively in front of mosques, regularly assault Muslims as understaffed and underequipped police forces fail to intervene. Lynchings and open calls for genocide are common. India now ranks among the 10 countries at the highest risk of mass killings, according to Early Warning Project, which assesses such risks around the world.
proof? there is ethnic cleansing, beheadings, lynchings, conversion of hindus and minorities by muslim extremists all across south asia in afghanistan pakistan india bangladesh kashmir etc. example is no hindu alive in afghanistan, pakistani hindu percentage is only 1.6% from 20% in 1951 due persecution of muslim islamist supremacists.
India is building deep sea ports in Vizhingam, South Nicobar, and other port infrastructure is being developed. Colombo port will start losing its importance because 40% of transhipment to India is done from Colombo.
Before asking weak neighbours - are you with us or against us? - ask yourself are you with the NORTH or a part of the GLOBAL SOUTH?
i guess even those employees didn't watch this time.
Opaque lending terms from China is an issue. India and Western world is more transparent. China is using BRI to grow it hegemony, it only benefits China. China uses its people and its companies with no consideration for building capability in the host country. China is a bad money lender, charging high Interest Rate.
Really Maldivian FM you have already created a mess in India by electing president who campaigned by saying India Out
What can we expect from Maldives. They are using India like affornated, still Bharat is talking.
Look.. he is "former" FM.. It was mentioned he is now a professor..
@@AnujValmiki Get your mind checked. He is representing from Maldives.
Democracy allows for freedom of choice? Then The Maldives chose China.
And that “India out” was also sponsored by China to counter India and same model is being applied by them in Bangladesh….
Who the hell is this guy to question another countries decision to take a loan. They have people as competent as your country.
…whereas Israel wants to erase Palestinians, India has for decades, used assimilation as a tactic to control Kashmir. Now it is a lot more open to erasing Kashmiris”.
They also have people as corrupt as any other countries

It's too ya ya goody goody. We need to be more business like. This socio-cultural people to people contact approach is too cheesy.
Understand these countries are aspirational & have an opportunity to develop faster than the region (india), break shackles of geography (shadow of india) and have their favourite ideological alignment ( Islam for Maldives, AntiWest for SriLanka & Bangladesh). Instead of counting evils of bri & debt trap tell them we will be happy if they become Singapore or dubai yet geopolitics & security will tie them to us. It's like telling a kid I would love for you to be a star athlete but caution against drugs in a bad company.
Most countries respect sensitivities say w.r.t. Pakistan. We can sensitize them more about our concerns and show benefits of staying with the region (not just India). At the Sametime make them aware of the consequences if they hurt us.
What democracy? India Is on the Brink

The Manipur government this year also began a citizenship verification drive that infringes on the privacy of Kuki. A similar drive in neighboring Assam state targeting Muslims has already reportedly disenfranchised nearly two million people.
Emboldened by the state government’s rhetoric, Meitei militias in Manipur have gone on a rampage of raping, pillaging, looting police armories and burning villages. More than 250 churches have been burned down. Those were Meitei men in the horrific 26-second video, sexually assaulting two Kuki women. (The video was shot in early May but came to light only in July, possibly delayed by a government internet ban imposed in the state in response to the violence.) Many similar attacks on Kuki women have been reported. Mr. Modi has called the rape incident “shameful” but has otherwise said little about the chaos in Manipur
