Thank you Laurie (Did I spell that right?)! I'm worried about my tine in my middle school band because my teacher is super strict about tone quality. I'll try this while playing and hope it makes all the difference. Once again, THANK YOU!!!
Help, I sounded really great my first year and this year I sound really bad! I don’t know if it’s psychological (I started having bad self confidence issues lately) or if I somehow lost my tone. It’s sounds muffled and forced and I can’t get rid of it. My band director keeps telling me my tone is bad but won’t tell me why. I’ve tried almost everything.
(I'm not a great French hornist, I started like a month or 2 ago) but if it is muffled you probably need to move your hand in the Bell to the top right ish and open it more, if it is forced use less air I guess (remember I'm not a pro so don't cry if it don't work XD)
well i can say that you still sound good but i'm assuming that you lost your self-esteem with the horn. Just trust yourself and be confident. Just do the long tones it shows on the video and boom your tone will be good as normal or better.
Not that anyone cares, but two years later I can say that it was a combination of air support, hand being to far in the bell, and my chin flying up which was rolling my lip in. Also I didn’t sound great my first year and I still don’t but my tone has improved a lot by being more confident and fixing those issues with the help of private lessons.
but it usually mean's you have tension on your lips. I sometimes have that problem and my private lesson teacher (Elizabeth Upton) say's that it's usually tension on your lips so she makes me blow on the back of my mouthpiece.
Take a large breath in for 8, hold for 4, and then sip in small amounts of air 8 times. This is to get to almost maximum lung capacity and then you are sipping to get the rest. Then breathe out all of your air in 8 counts, and make a hissing sound for another 8. The hissing will get rid of all the extra air you missed. After the hiss breathe back in and catch your breath. It is normal to cough and such, but this breathing exercise is what I used to do in marching band and it's fantastic.
Ok I play French horn right I was good my 6th grade year but I went to band camp and I found out when I play I have like air seeping trough my mouth making my sound terrible can anyone help me
Alex Playz oh yeah I had the same problem for awhile. Play each note almost like you're singing it but not using your voice and keep practicing the stuff in this video. My sound was bad for a good amount of time and it still isn't perfect but I'm learning as well.
Boi I've been playing for years and sound like the sound of people screaming to run away from a rabid bear. Okay not really but I did struggle for a bit
calm down guys. Give it time. It takes patience. I usually do this for an hour every day for 7 years of my life playing the horn. I'm being honest. I'm 17 so yea don't be complaining. You'll see the final results, but you still to do them no matter what, and if you don't want to then the french horn is not for you>
trumpet player recently picked up french horn and have been struggling with tone. will definitely try this!

but it usually mean's you have tension on your lips. I sometimes have that problem and my private lesson teacher (Elizabeth Upton) say's that it's usually tension on your lips so she makes me blow on the back of my mouthpiece.
Empty all condensation from your instrument and make sure your valve caps are on properly.
😂mines do the same thank y’all
I play the French horn and it was very helpful
She went flat the louder she got ....
yeah
thanks so much. That so useful as I have an audition for a new concert band in 3 weeks!😊👍
I have to perform for 4th graders tomorrow, and I am SOO SCARED!!! I hope this helps, thanks!
Thank you so much. Helped a lot.
Sweet lord jesus, if that's how this women teaches her students I weep for the sound of their band :(
Lol
Thank you for sharing your expert opinion. I'm sure that you could do much better.
Nice
A lot matters on your horn. If you have a horn like you rented in the 6th grade, you will never get that sound. EVER.
lol ty
I did
What
I'm on a double horn with no spit valve lol.
Does anyone know a breathing exercise that can help me breath less between notes and have longer phrases?

Yeah Kammi9111 I agree. That or she's sharp when quiet. Probably both.

im a trumpet player trying out the french horn for fun. but i keep splitting notes -.- any help really?
I did the same thing when i taught myself i would figure out the pitch and practice it until i knew it like the back of my hand
SheffieldsOwnFatBoy lol
SheffieldsOwnFatBoy Sing the note in your head before you play it.
playing scales and chromatic helps learn pitches
Another thing my director told me about the open throat is pretend you're yawning

Middle A or high A?
work your way up to it in chromatic

Okay not really but I did struggle for a bit

That A note was a little off.
Not sopose to move your head to the French horn you move the instrument to you
How far apart should your teeth be?
Oscar Martinez just keep it natural, don't focus on the teeth. Focus more on the sound.
this teaches nothing. my tone is still terible
Ikr... Like this did nothing but frustrate me further

my privet teacher tells me "to get a good tone you have to do nothing tone just comes out " quote Dena Laurel
She's wrong tbh
pfft she is totally wrong. You must do long tones especially those kind of long tones shown in the video.
xD
:D
xD really?
what the actual fuck is this?
a video
WTF IS A DAY CRESCENDO
Llamas are cool And tasty decrescendo. It's getting softer, the opposite of a crescendo
im talking about the pronunciation not what it it is. Technically it is called a diminuendo. =D
IT'S NOT A FRENCH HORN
Ryan Gann uh it kinda is
eh double horn, just adding the thumb valve.
Ryan Gann double horn is the best type
ZeroWolf It's called horn, it's not French
my horn is from england, but it's far from being an english horn mate
your internation needs improvement on the first time you played
