11 years into his career, after twin Achilles surgery, back surgery....Bird is still throwing up Triple Doubles. Anyone who says that Bird is not one of the best ever is nuts. This guy could do it ALL.
Most of the early part of the Celtics 1990-91 campaign was a highlight reel. This team started off 29-5,before Birds back, and then his absence, brought the team down to earth. They had a string of games in Dec 1990 and early 1991 where Bird and the Celtics were on fire. They dropped 152 points on the Pacers the day after Christmas,1990.In the end it wasn't meant to be,but many highlights like these in the early part of the 1990-91 Celtics.
Thanks for posting!! Bird toward the end of his career could still dazzle the crowd and players on the court. This guy had a feel for the game that is hard to describe. You have to watch Bird play to understand he knew where everybody was on the floor. Pass without looking, shoot ridiculous rainbows in the blink of an eye, footwork to box out and pound the boards, movement without the ball, quick hands to pick off passes and get steals, hustle, desire to win, a great teammate who always seemed to rise to the clutch to win the game. Legend says it all.
I've been watching a lot of old Celtics games and I've seen enough highlights involving Bird, Parish, McHale that a 20 minute highlight video WITH relatively unseen HL's could be made. I've seen so many videos with those same 75-100 plays and there's easily another 250-300 HL plays out there for someone with the time and know how. This early 90's game right here with the HEAT has quite a few. Bird and his no looks.
most young fans of today's NBA said Bird would be irrelevant today. Clueless folks. The 91 playoffs shows an old bird with verb bad back and ankles averaging almost triple double and was still a threat to the bulls.
“Larry has a way of making everybody he comes into contact with a better person. A pure American of the highest character as reported in Sports Illustrated: "Bob Woolf, Larry Bird's attorney, brings out a hotel bill dated April 6, 1979. .... Now, the most illuminating thing in this whole saga is that hotel bill from 1979. You see, except for the basic room charge and the tax, there was nothing else on it. No room service, no restaurant charge, no long-distance phone calls, no nothing. Having dealt with many other athletes, Woolf naturally assumed that the kid would charge at will. But that wasn't how Larry Joe Bird was raised back in French Lick, Indiana. ‘Larry has a way of making everybody he comes into contact with a better person,’ Woolf says. ‘If you think the Larry Bird on the court has character and is unselfish-well, off the court he's even more so.’ Among those who know Bird well, the same catalog of qualities is cited again and again: honest, loyal, steadfast, dependable-his existence shaped by the contradictory, almost mystical ability to be the cynosure, yet always to contribute to those around him. Mel Daniels, who was an assistant coach at Indiana State when Bird played there, said it best: ‘It's like a piece of Larry goes to each player by the things he does.’ Tony Clark, a Terre Haute radio executive who grew up with Bird, says, ‘Larry epitomizes the word friend. Do you understand that?’ Yes. ‘Then you really don't have to know anything else about him.’” (Sports Illustrated 1988, Frank Deford, “A Player For The Ages,” Sports Illustrated, Time, Inc., New York, New York, March 21, 1988) th-cam.com/video/baBdnA7cui0/w-d-xo.html
Today's refs would NEVER even think about calling traveling on that play. That play would be on ESPN every 30 sec if MJ, Kobe or LeBron ever made a play like that.
The 90/91 Celtics were as good as a passing team as any Celtics team during the Bird years. The 91 ECF should have been Boston vs Chicago. But the injuries to Bird just slowed them down. This team started 29-5.
Kevin Gamble had a really good stint including a breakthrough game vs the Cavaliers at the end of the 88-89 season. He would have been good without Bird he just needed a chance. Bird being there helped but it's a credit to Kevin for having skills that just needed his moment to shine. All the same Bird still is the Einstein of roundball.
George Wagner that isn’t true. kevin gamble was a really good, underrated celtic in the early 90’s. i was disappointed when i saw something with jackie mcmullan in which she made it seem like he was a scrub when he definitely wasn’t.
I hated having to play these bullshit "home games" in the Hartford Civic Center. If memory serves correct, we usually had to play 3 of these games there every season. So ridiculous.

Larry Bird - basketball genius
An aging Larry Legend putting on a clinic. Awesome stuff.
no words can describe this man. no one before and NO ONE after played the game like Bird. Genius ..
yep almost comical how good he was on the court. never to be duplicated, not even close.
The GOAT Team Player!

3:50 saddest traveling call ever. The ref messed up an awesome play!
So many great highlights in this one!
Thanks Carmundo9!

Such a team crafty player.
A passing clinic w LB draining long range shots at 35 yrs old👍
THAT 91 TEAM WAS FUN TO WATCH! SHAME ABOUT ALL THE INJURIES THEY HAD THAT YEAR
Wow, he decimated the Heat. He was looking to pass this night and really had them reeling.
What a great video of passing. Bird is the master and his team has learned to be ready--and touch passing. Thank you for this wonder.
Have you noticed "Heat" starting to tire? Props to Larry for endurance~!
Terrific post; Bird was feasting out there.
A shell of himself physically, but a basketball genius always. Thanks for watching, guys.

Larry Bird was the smartest man to play basketball.
Larry and Magic Johnson had eyes from behind his backs.

RIP Tommy
0:26 THERE HE GO
That was not a travel-ref!
Today's refs would NEVER even think about calling traveling on that play. That play would be on ESPN every 30 sec if MJ, Kobe or LeBron ever made a play like that.
GOAT IMO
Send that referee home!!
just a clinic.
That was no travel at 3:54, but I guess the ref thought it had to be.
Now imagine a healthy Bird, and Bias? Good Lord.
Thank you. My thoughts exactly. Forget Jordan, Magic and Isiah winning a lot of titles. With Bird leading we would have seen the real Dream Team.
This is what real triple doubles look like. No egotistical stat chasing, or selling teammates out for numbers.

Any reason why this game was played in Hartford
Back then they played 3 games a year in Hartford as their “home away from home.”
hello! you have this game in full?
What a terrible call by that ref. It was not a travel, he moved his feet in. And he was fouled. Should have been a three point play
“Send that referee home.” 😂
@@ifheavenwashuman I’ll let you call him to do it.
Wow, they looked like the 86 Celtics out there, only more athletic! What ever happened to Kevin Gamble? He looked awesome in this game.
He only played that good with Bird. A chemistry thing. Bird had that affect on a lot of guys.
George Wagner No doubt about that George! He really did seem to make Kevin Gamble a lot better.
