PS1s are so fun to repair because of how many versions there are. I bought a 1001 with a bad laser a while back, and managed to replace it with a working 9001 assembly I had. Needed to hand-cut the plastic to make it fit, but it works like a charm now.
He's back. It's like an 8 year time warp. Hope all is well and excited to see something new. I used to look forward to new videos from you. There's only a few of you tech guys that repair stuff. Your one of the few left. Luke the triple OG
This is what I like about Luke. Doesn't matter what it is, a £2000 gem or a console you can't even give away, he will always repair them with the upmost care and respect.
Thanks for being around man. I actually prefer the ones that are trashed and thrown out so if you have anything laying around let me know lol. Ive got no interest in the expensive gems per say but I like the ones that are in rough shape
oh man if it wasn't so expensive to send stuff to japan i'd love to send you model 2 saturn, it tripped the fuse breaker in my home years ago and has never worked again since, before it died it use to run ok then gradually the graphics would become scrambled until it crashed.
I had to replace the CD mechanism in a first-generation Playstation, and I did it with a mechanism from a forth-generation one. I had to cut some of the plastic on the bottom of the mechanism and adjust the height of the spindle hub but it worked out very well in the end.
I love how much worries you have about that spindle replacement, I stuck first spindle from old DVD player with magnet top, modified the top to fit into the case (there is a lot more space then you think) and it worked. :D
Great work Luke, I've got a box of these old consoles needing new disk spindle tops (whatever they're called) so some great tips on replacing them, much rather use recycled parts to fix em and get them back out there playing games
do what you can to save the consoles from the garbage. especially nowadays when they are getting harder to find in running conditions. Take it easy and thanks again
Just found your channel dude. Amazed that you don't have more subscribers. Keep em coming because I'm gonna binge watch everything you've uploaded rn. :D
Years ago I tried to repair my lasers ordered a few 3 or so new laser assembly. Every time the gears were broken on them before i could install. I gave up on that project maybe someday I'll try again.
Thanks for replying, and do you know why the power button on my original Xbox doesn't work? The only way to turn it on is to plug the power cord in and it automatically turns on and the only way to turn it off is to unplug the power cord.I looked it up online and it says this is caused by the clock capacitor leaking acid on to the power button traces and corroded them so it doesn't work. Is this correct, and do you know how to fix this?
Thanks for replying. I have an original Xbox that has a power problem so when I plug the power cord in it automatically turns on and the only way to turn it off is to unplug the power cord. I looked it up online and it said that this could be caused by the clock capacitor leaking acid on to the power button traces and corroding them, is this correct? And do you know how I can fix this? Thanks once again I really love you, your channel, and all of your videos. Thee first video I watched was the video about removing the clock capacitor from the original Xbox. I also have post notifications turned on for your channel, that's how much I love your channel.
Thanks A lot. Im usually pretty good with the repairs as long as I can get the parts or have the time to figure it out. The NES vid should be something you can enjoy for sure. Thats all Ill say :)
Great work man! You were lucky that the part fit so well because it looks like it would be hard to tell you have replaced it with something different. This video makes me want to pull out my old PlayStation 1 that I bought at a local flea market years and years ago and put a mod chip in. I did that back in the day to run a Nintendo emulator. I think I still have a bunch of Nintendo games burnt to a disc that will boot on that PlayStation and it actually can save the game's state to a Sony memory card on the unit. I remember it was a lot of fun to play with but I think the laser on that model I have overheats sometimes and I would always play it with a large ice pack underneath it and on top of it and it would run rock solid, LOL!
I've got a Playstation One that wont read any disc. A pop up message come up, and says that I need to use an Playstation disc. I tried the laser on another console, and it worked fine. So what can the problem maybe be?
Watching you test the disc reminds me of when I used to rent games back in the PS1 days. It wasn't uncommon to get a disc that skipped in parts. Although the idea of resurfacing the discs seemed unappealing to me, I had it done to Castlevania Symphony of the Night and it fixed the skipping of certain music tracks in the castle. I'd give that a go on Heart of Darkness, that's a decent looking game.
I can hear that for sure, sounds like fun repairs for sure. This game is quite interesting for sure. Out of this world :) Thanks a lot for the comments and take it easy
Treeface , ____ If, even after the result of your polishing effort on the disc yielded a great surface across the entire media, you still have skipping issues on certain music tracks, I'd peruse the possibility that your laser needs adjusted and also checked for excessive disc wobble especially as the laser works harder towards the outer edge of the disk to keep its focus. ____ Longer PlayStation logo splash screens, load times and FMV + in-game music glitching is often an indicator if lubrication and lens cleaning have already been done. You can test this with certain games that allowed one to pull the game disc out after a full level had been loaded , paused and a music CD swapped in its place with an outermost track selected, if possible, closer to the CD outer edge and therein observe whether the CD music still skips while playing the loaded level. You'll have to keyword search those games as I can't recall any off the top of my head other than maybe the Ridge Racer or Wipeout series... just don't recall. There's alot of laser adjustment videos through appropriate keyword searches so I won't list any here. ____ I would emphasize that tune-ups may minimally want to involve a good digital multimeter from which measurements can be made to make differential-based, relativistic adjustments but an oscilloscope would render the greatest level of real-time measurement detail especially when adjusting for laser power = just enough output to get the job done especially at the outer edge of media discs so as to not prematurely age it, burn it out.
Sooo, my psone slim has video and audio issues. At first it was a slightly darker tinted screen. Then it went nuts and started spazzing and jittering. Any ideas? I have tried everything...
Great stuff Luke :) Love your enthusiasm and dedication to saving stuff from the skip. Any plans for some new out and about videos? I miss your bicycle trips :) Cheers!
I have a pair of broken PlayStation 2 controllers one that just barely works (some of buttons barely work and the triangle button doesn't work at all) and another that's somewhat OK but the connecting wire has frayed open how do I fix these problems
I'm currently waiting a psone that i bought online really cheap so i can have a project and i have all the cords but the ac adapter so i was wondering, can i rig something up to test? which are the specs?
Luke, i highly suggest to use the WD-40 on the motor spindle (called RF-300A) and on the sled motor. Also use some tamiya grease con the mecha, should be helps a lot. Use the pot adj like a last solution ;-). Also, for the maximum performance, use the original spindle (the original one for another console for example, not the chinese parts ^^) Btw, the KSM-440AEM, it's a very strong laser. The FMV skipping is caused by the disc, so, don't worry about it. Take Care :-). P.S what a kind of av cable is it? It's made by Hori!? That's interesting! Is RGB or composite? :-)
Thanks a lot man. Ive repaired around 100 of these things over the years and have most of the tricks down for the most part but thanks my friend. You may find the next video entertaining as it goes a bit more extreme into repairs then the basic cleaning process ;) stay tuned. As far as the av cables go,they are hori s-video cables :) only way to play the ps1 nowadays aside from an rgb mod. thanks again
hey can you help me some of my cd's stuck on the playstation licensed by sony bla bla bla scea....and sme is so laggy in video intros..can you help me...
Never throw anything away. Nice job on exchanging the spindle. The disc may read better in a PS3. I've found that it's laser handles scratched discs better than an old PS1.
WhatsOnMyShelf , Could your observation and pursuant conclusion be based on older PlayStation 1 CD spindles simply losing their grip on the discs, creating excessively difficult tracking scenarios for the laser in addition to the laser getting overworked and maybe needing tuned up?
I'm not sure, but you do bring up a good point. Tune up? How would you fix a loose spindle, if in fact that is the problem. How would you devise an experiment to test your theory? Would you find a faulty PS1 where its spindle is the suspected problem and replace it with a new, unused spindle?
WhatsOnMyShelf , It's empirical for me. I had an old Sony Discman that I no longer used which had a "plumb" spindle I slipped off from its motor and swapped over to the PS1 after noting the height of the original PS1 spindle on the motor shaft. After tapping it down and lifting it back up a few times on the shaft to land within the workable focal point, other matters became a moot point other than potentially needing a slight laser potentiometer adjustment for just a couple of games that rarely exhibited problems that I didn't take the effort to open the shell backup to remedy. Testing full-length music CDs, they typically played except for rare occurrences for tracks near the outer edge. I inferred that disc wobble from the original spindle wearing out, having been bent and not as tight in the disc was playing into an overworked focus feedback circuit.
I'd add, that if a re-purposed / up-cycled spindle is going to be removed for use in a PS1, that it's gently leveraged off with equal lifting effort on opposite sides / opposing edges of the spindle ( a forked device underneath placing lifting force along the diameter from fork tips has worked ) or the effort may be for naught as it might warp and tip the spindle out of plumb with the motor shaft hole. If not readily available / there are no candidates for up-cycling, new spindles are often sold in multi packs of 5 for typical price of $5 in North America.
hey Luke I been wanting to repair my PS one slim it seem that the power port been damaged and I been looking around for the part and I haven't had any luck..do you know where would I be able to find the part?
Hey Luke, can you give me a little help? I have PSOne, bought it with dead laser, replaced whole mech with new from China, tested for couple of hours, then I put it away for a couple of years, not played at all, and now, when I turn it on, it refuces to read ANY disc, even music cd's. What's the reason can it be? With old (original) laser, things are even worse.
looked like an easy enough repair. Im the guy who says "if it aint broke dont fix it" just because id be too afraid when i tore it down to clean it i wouldnt put it back together right. The tape trick would have been more than ok with me lol.
Someone really needs to make new lasers/disc drives for these systems! I am aware of the many cheap ones on ebay but they almost certainly don't work well! My consoles could need new lasers at any point and it would be nice to get replacements that are guaranteed to work!
Might as well give them a try. Also PS1s are cheap. You can scavenge parts easily. It does make me wonder how interchangeable CD drive parts are; such as, could you take a random PC CD drive laser mech and drop it in a Sega CD? Even if the fit is right, I'm sure the volts and amps are different.
I just got a free PS1 from my friend, and it's the same thing like this one. It loads some games, and some are just stuck at Playstation logo with black screen. And even when games load, they are choppy, music is choppy and Playstation in general is really noisy. I guess I will take it apart, clean it all up and add some grease on laser moving part (as I saw that on the other video). I hope I fix mine too :)
Had a chance to buy one of these from a local auction last week, came with 3-4 controllers an the cables it went for $11 but figured nah I dont really need a third one
Hey Luke, it has been a long time since I have watched one of your videos. Probably don't remember me (I'm Wally's brother, supergamepuggbros). If you wanna hang out, I live in Japan at the moment (past four years). You can direct message me if you want. Just thought I buy you a beer or something. Also got a Sharp Fami-twin if think you can fix the disk system.

lowelife101 Check the internal PSU fuse.
If it tripped your home fuse, something shorted in your power pcb board, check cable etc.
i have something you can fix. Its two jaguar console with a cd attachment
Very well done! Happy to see a legendary console brought to life!
Thanks as always my friend for the compliments and the comments. hope you enjoy the next video. Should be up by July 1st or 2nd. Stay Tuned
saving a classic system from the grave good old playstation love your videos luke
This is awesome. I've missed old Luke repair vids!!
Thanks again my friend. Back again and repairing stuff like its going out of style.
I had to replace the CD mechanism in a first-generation Playstation, and I did it with a mechanism from a forth-generation one. I had to cut some of the plastic on the bottom of the mechanism and adjust the height of the spindle hub but it worked out very well in the end.

Good idea. Thanks bro.
Nicely done Luke, makes me wanna go out and get an OG PS1 all over again.
Makes me wanna go bust out my PS1! Absolutely loving all the vids lately.
You are now my favorite youtuber
Hey Luke great video I love you and all of your videos.

You need to open Xbox to be sure, and if it is bad traces then you need to jumper over traces, or if you can fix traces.
It's just amazing how everything up till now keeps working for you. I love the original Playstation. And looking forward to that NES repair video :)
Thanks A lot. Im usually pretty good with the repairs as long as I can get the parts or have the time to figure it out. The NES vid should be something you can enjoy for sure. Thats all Ill say :)
Healing hands. :) Great job. These videos make me so happy!
i remember replacing the spindle and finding it was either too high or low so halfway through the game it would not load so frustrating

FINALLY! You nailed the outro xD lol, nice to see this one progress so well :)
You should take the disc to polish in a shop next. Its a great game, and it deserves it.
Also I'm interested to see if you can get the Mattel electronics handheld working
Sooo, my psone slim has video and audio issues. At first it was a slightly darker tinted screen. Then it went nuts and started spazzing and jittering. Any ideas? I have tried everything...
Great stuff as usual - looking really new that PS1 =D
Ive got a video coming that you should find entertaining for sure man. Thanks as always and really appreciate the comments.
Have you done any videos covering your Neo Geo collection recently? Drooling over all those MVS carts behind where you were filming there!
Great stuff Luke :) Love your enthusiasm and dedication to saving stuff from the skip.
Any plans for some new out and about videos? I miss your bicycle trips :)
Cheers!
Dang lasers, can never be too sure about them. Good job on polishing the puppy up, looks great :)
luke what would cause a ps1 to read cd music but not play a game? Thanks
No video means it is either a bad cable or something wrong inside the system so that video can't make it to the TV.
I have a pair of broken PlayStation 2 controllers one that just barely works (some of buttons barely work and the triangle button doesn't work at all) and another that's somewhat OK but the connecting wire has frayed open how do I fix these problems
i have my old PS1 that needs a new motor and laser unit. I dont know where to fin a non-chinese one.. they are such a bad quality.
wow. i really love this channel. saving classics but to me they are not classics lol
"Hopefully things go well." Golden Corral's new slogan
Xenografting Sega Dreamcast spindle bits into a Sony Playstation is quite a feat.

Rad video luke,,these are my favorite.
At a flea market some guy sold me a ps1 with the cords, analog controller, and a ps1 memory card and ps2 memory card for 7 bucks
Letfordlay if it works thats an amazing deal
Rekt M8 its works like brand new, even with some of my really scratched games
WHAT WAS UP WITH THE PS1 SPINNERS? Every one I come across has it missing? Manufacturing error or something? Or just age?
I just opened one up and the bearings were rattling around in the console. Luckily they just popped right back in.
Had to replace my spindle too. Taking that thing off was a hassle, but popping one on is easy.
Never throw anything away. Nice job on exchanging the spindle. The disc may read better in a PS3. I've found that it's laser handles scratched discs better than an old PS1.

hey Luke I been wanting to repair my PS one slim it seem that the power port been damaged and I been looking around for the part and I haven't had any luck..do you know where would I be able to find the part?
Nice repair!
I enjoy your videos so much :) Your great keep it up ^-^
Those spindles take a little effort to pull but they are on eBay for cheap.
Cross-platform parts?! Blasphemous! ;D
Better than those old bits-n-bobs going unused though! Nice repair!
Luke you should do a repair video on og Xbox controllers
Hey there, loving the content!
Is that an lcd tv the playstation is playing on? Looks pretty good on there.
hey look great vid as always!! I was wondering what kind of monitor is that SHARP AQUOS? is good for retro gaming?
can't wait for the NES video, I'm sure that'll be fun to clean and repair. ;)
what tv are you using, it looks really nice. appreciate a reply
im getting goosebumps hearing that sony intro.
Great repair, Luke what was the name of the game with the english subtitles?
space shot
Is that spindle swinging the CD?
Hey Luke, can you give me a little help?
I have PSOne, bought it with dead laser, replaced whole mech with new from China, tested for couple of hours, then I put it away for a couple of years, not played at all, and now, when I turn it on, it refuces to read ANY disc, even music cd's.
What's the reason can it be?
With old (original) laser, things are even worse.
zedeg94 I've read somewhere you can take the laser out of the Chinese knock off and insert it into the old original mechanism and it'll work
Ofcource you can, but in both casese spiendel is spinning (dunno is it fast enough), but so there is no reading.
looked like an easy enough repair. Im the guy who says "if it aint broke dont fix it" just because id be too afraid when i tore it down to clean it i wouldnt put it back together right. The tape trick would have been more than ok with me lol.

I did not know people still collected vhs tapes
How did you remove the rust on the shielding?
always had problems with the spindle clips and balls breaking
Had a chance to buy one of these from a local auction last week, came with 3-4 controllers an the cables it went for $11 but figured nah I dont really need a third one
it didn't show how to cleaning it or how to re adjust it(how to fixed it) ....so , nothing to see...
Nice repair !
I wondered... What do you use to clean the plastic ?
After a long time playing it becomes a bit "greasy",.. :/
Taytoutay as in it starts to turn yellow?
Hello Luke, just a question. Is your Japanese now so good that you can completely understand the spoken text in that game at around 15 minutes in?
whats the japanese game?
Hey Luke, it has been a long time since I have watched one of your videos. Probably don't remember me (I'm Wally's brother, supergamepuggbros). If you wanna hang out, I live in Japan at the moment (past four years). You can direct message me if you want. Just thought I buy you a beer or something. Also got a Sharp Fami-twin if think you can fix the disk system.
AAAA THAT GRINDING IS THE TAPE IN THAT CAP THING AT THE TOP OF THE DISK COVER. AAAAA WHY WANST THIS LIVE
Nice Franken Station 😄
for future reference the playstation logo is on the actual disc, so if you get only sony its not loading.
My ps1 has the same skipping problems
Luke do you have a shed or something filled with console parts? Haha.
Hey Luke. You should get a tripod.
Shooter: Space Shot is a hilariously generic name for a game, isn't it?
I Do Have a Sony PS1 at my Place it was at my School
This is entertaining, but your bringing that trashed and rotted NES back from the grave was TOTALLY your Magnum Opus!
Hi, while restoring my ps1 i found there was no video output so i changed the capacitors and video is back but all distorted like ih this video i took: th-cam.com/video/2TmfUBaWD6Q/w-d-xo.html any way to solve it? thanks.
What is the reason for you living in Japan, also don’t get COVID-19
Are you Japan? Actually: Are you japanese?
hımbıl kiraücretiniacımazsızcaarttıranınoğlu No, he is not a country, he's human
Sorry :) My fault
hımbıl kiraücretiniacımazsızcaarttıranınoğlu i think he's an American living in Japan.
Anyone else see the pube on the top right of the console. LOL
Ill buy it from you lol
All u need is *A FORKING SCREWDRIVER TO MAKR A PS1 WORK*
