The Tele Thinline has always been the "one that got away" for me... back in the mid 80's I had a chance to buy a 1973 exactly like these, it was amazing but I didn't have the $400.00 at the time... still kicking myself nearly 40 years later!

When I was 21 I had a choice between a Patrick eggle (any model) or a Washburn kc44v . Well I dunno what I did with the Washburn after floyd fashion. £400 because the eggle had never been seen before. Yep I guess we all do it

I have one of these from the old days. It’s freakin wicked ripper for high gain. This one also needs a fret job. Previous owner appears to have made $50k a year playing live on this neck. It’s the eat sounding guitar I have, and the worst playing

Loved your comparison. I use a '72 Thinline and it's the perfect tool for almost any job. Adding a little more mid to your last example woulda give her more body and, since I got a coil-tap, I can get some sweet country twang.

This is such a good way to show off these vintage spec guitars. I have the American Original '72 Tele Custom with the CuNiFe neck humbucker and it's a really incredible pickup. I am really tempted to pick up the regular solid-body Deluxe, but I'm low-key bummed they went with a poly finish for the 70's models. Even though it's historically accurate, I'm surprised there isn't at least a little cost-savings there. Still, this line seems very cool!

I’m super jealous you got to have both guitars side by side. I just got the American Vintage II 72 Thinline, because I doubt I’ll ever be able to afford a nice original 72. I will say that it was my first experience with cunife pickups and I think they live up the the hype.

Nice playing Jonathan. There are some things that just can't just be replicated from a vintage
guitar. You can sand the paint off, you can scratch it all up, you can age the pick up covers and
hardware but you can't replicate vintage electronics. That sweetness only comes one way. ")

We might need to hear another comparison after the new model has 50 years of wear on it. It could make a difference in the sound of the pickups. I think they both sounded really good, though. What I like about the new American Vintage II model is that the pickups have CuNiFe magnets. So cool!

  • @hafizimranYT

Jim Lill somewhere on TH-cam did a video on what makes a guitar tone. He concludes it’s mostly the pickups and pickup height more than any other variable. In the end, he built a “guitar” that has no body- just a pickup suspended in space, and compared it to his Anderson Tele. It was very close. So allz y’allz golden ear nutters may want to watch that video first before saying vintage is better, etc. To me, the sound is close enough between these two. Folks will say “I hear a MASSIVE difference listening to this over my $100K studio monitor setup.” to which I will tell them, “Most people will hear your music through earbuds, on a bus, over Spotify (compression).”

I had an American pro 2 Tele and I had a luthier route out just about everything below the pick guard and had him put in two of those pick ups with a 1mg pot and I love it. They’re really unique sounding p/u’s IMO. I have the access heel as well which is a big bonus for me. Great video Jonathon!

It seems like the reissue was brighter and had more break up. I actually preferred it on the first song you played. All the others, the vintage, with it's more balanced tone and clarity on the bass seems to win out. The reissue sounds a little more like a traditional Tele, the vintage one more of a traditional humbucker sound.

I just listened to “Funk 49.” There was something between different Tele 1 and Tele 2. What are those differences? Without knowing (at the time of this comment) I thought Tele #2 seemed more pleasing. If that’s the Vintage II GREAT! Regardless, comparing the new guitar to a real ‘72 or a Custom Shop ‘72 a bargain at $2300. Although, I’ve played many “local T-Style build” Teles at $1700 that will compete with many “FENDER Telecasters.”They just don’t say Fender on the guitar. Now, I’m going to listen and find out which was which. I did like the tone of guitar #2.

A thought - the new one was a little brighter, the 72 sounder rounder: Different strings, or old vs new / unplayed, or steel vs nickel could account for the difference.
So could pickup height / adjustment. So could the age and reduced strength of the older magnets...

Just found this video. I bought one of those new back in 1972/3- great guitar, and the pickups were very clear and great for chord and rhythm, but I found lacking a little penetration for lead playing and eventually went for a Gibson with P90s a year later. In hindsight, I would have liked to kept the Tele as well, but there ya go.

As soon as I heard Fender reissued the CuNiFe pups I shelled out a gagillion bajillion dollars and pre-ordered them. They are fantastic.

Hmm..betcha part of it is the original CuNiFe pickups in the '72. The modern-day closest replacements, made by Fender, are not stock to the re-issue. Those pickups are a half-grand a set. But it's a super-nice MIM reissue, no joke there.

  • @hairlab9646

Nice Vid. A 73 Custom and a 76 thinline have been my #1 and 2 since I bought them in 84 and 87 respectively. It's hard to compare the WRHB since there is as much variation in those pickups than even early PAF's. Believe it or not the "WRHB" that sounds most like my my favorite, the one in the custom, is a "wrong" version in the Vintera. The new Cunifes's tend to lack the "flutey" quality of the best old ones. The difference is only barely noticeable in this vid.

On the sound alone, the only slight difference I could tell from the recording could be chalked up to pickup height. Once it adjusted to the new volume, they sound the same. I have yet to see how they feel. I like how they are new and not relics, as well as the much cheaper price than vintage or custom shop. All that said, I would not be picking one up as I would want more modern features. Already love my Pro II.

I am by no means a vintage snob, and I don't know what it sounded like in the room -- but listening on Beyerdynamic DT 770 headphones, the difference was night and day, and the real 72 is head and shoulders above for my tastes. Rounder, smoother, warmer. The Vintage II CuNiFe's are much punchier and brighter and in-your-face. The bridge PU was on the border of being too harsh. Again, that's my personal taste - I'm sure brighter and punchier is preferable to a lot of people.
I actually feel a little better now about my American Professional II Tele Deluxe -- I was kicking myself because I didn't do my research and assumed I'd be able to drop in CuNiFe's in the future if I wanted to, but the routings are too small for true Wide Range pickups. The stock PUs are very nice, but they are their own animal.

I preferred the American II Thenline 72' over the original. I don't think tone wise there was much of a difference, maybe the player could tell but as a listener I think its going to lose that extra 5% when the drums kick in. Also I noticed the fret markers on the original were bigger and I didn't like the look of that. The new guitar looks too orange on the neck but that'ts the only issue I had with it. Also its like $2k-3K cheaper if I'm not mistaken. So for me the new one sounds better, looks marginally better, plays better, and is cheaper. I know which one I would take to the gig. The Squire version of this 😂 of course!

Nicely done comparison. I agree with the prevailing opinion that the real '72 was slightly smoother, but they're very, VERY similar to each other. Definitely a difference. To me the original 72’ won hands down based on this solo performance. However the replica would be the better choice in a band setting. All things equal with no EQ tweaks the newer model would cut through the mix better. The mid range of the original would get lost and would sound muddy, possibly due to weaker pickups. But… if you handed me an EQ and I could boost the highs an reduce the lows and mids, the original would still win… my two cents.

Day and Night, not slight at all, the Real 1972 all the way. The real question is whether the guitars influenced your playing. . .

In 2001, I had one of these. Mexican, I think?

    Original sounds a little thicker.

    If there's a difference I can't hear it.

The idea that you can tell any real difference through all the compression of listening to something over the internet is absurd.

If anything it means that if you can hear a difference through the TH-cam video then in person the difference are even more stark

@@dansands6363 I find that you lose all the dynamics and subtle details that make all the difference hearing things in person or through uncompressed recordings. The compression I’m talking about is different type of compression. It’s file compression where information is left out. You are fundamentally missing parts of the audio. Not compressing the signal like with a compressor pedal or compression on the board.
It’s the subtle differences of dynamics or the way the harmonics work together that you lose. I find that it’s those attributes that make different pedals so different. Since you’re losing out on that vital information, these demos are pretty useless. Even the guys at that pedal show, who have some of the better sound in this area, mention this quite often. I’ve bought pedals because of how they sounded on that show and when I get it home to play on it, it sounds completely different than I thought it would. Much darker or brighter, or more sizzle than I expected, things like this. Sometimes I’m pleasantly surprised, sometimes I’m really bummed. Though usually, if those guys recommend something, it’s usually really good.

      It's about the presenters ears

The difference in input sound still yields differences after signal processing by youtube. Not all ears detect equally.

Good lord, look at the size of that neck pocket on the old one! Mine was like that. Terrible guitar.
