  • I have a lot of people contact me and ask "What color is my chinchilla?" Hopefully this video will help you answer that. All you need is a piece of white computer paper and something black. I also have photos here: sunsetchinchill...
The colors in the video are Standard Gray, Sapphire, Beige, Violet and Blue Diamond. All are girls between 6 and 14 months old.

Holding a chinchilla by the tail is a very safe method of restraint. Babies are little squirrels on crack as it is and this is the safest way to handle them, show their fur and not have them break their legs when they jump and hit the floor.

People! Stop bashing her for holding them by their tail! That is exactly how you're supposed to hold a chinchilla. Before you come on the internet and start critisizing poeple, educate yourselves! A chinchilla's tail is not like that of a dog or cat! It's strong and sturdy, meant to be able to take their full weight in the wild, not merely for balance! Their tails is more like that of a monkey, just shorter. If you start yanking them around by the tail, sure, that hurts. But not holding or restraining them by it. And yes, there IS a difference between the two! You pick a chinchilla up by lifting the tail, then you can help the process along with your other hand, which you place under their belly. But as I said, the tail is absolutely fine on it's own too, it's meant to take their full weight!

Chinchillas tails are not "strong and sturdy". You should never hold a chinchilla by the tail its painful and uncomfortable for them. You can tell they dont like it cause there trying to escape and hide. The pulling on there tail bothered me but the actual picking them up and hanging them by there tail made me so mad. You should never hold a chinchilla by the tail and you should learn how to hold a chinchilla. You explained how how it hurts to yank there tail but not by restraining and that woman was down right yanking it, tugging it, and pulling it.

Fubu The Rat Terrier thank you. She was holding them upside down and full on yanking and tugging their tails and they kept trying to run away. She even dragged them together by their tails and that looked so uncomfortable

@@FubuTheRatTerrier Not only do breeders with many years of experience pick them up by tail, medical technicians from exotic vet hospital also pick them up by the tail. They are prey animals, most will try to escape no matter how you pick them up. And when they are sick and need medical care, sometimes you NEED to pick them up even if they don‘t like it. I find picking then up by tail the less stressful way as they tend to bark less as opposed to picking them by their body.

Of course not, their tail is part of the spine. It is firmly attached and after 21 years (and thousands of chinchillas) I've never had one break nor lose a tail. You would have to be really, really rough with them to do so. If you would like more information on learning how to properly handle chinchillas both ECBC and MCBA chinchilla clubs put on free educational seminars throughout the year. You can become a member and get magazines for $25 or $35 and get lots of information.

If you handle your chins properly they will get used to being handled which is really important in an emergency situation. Please don't put your emotions before the safety of your pet.

wylistcoyote Look that’s fine. However, pulling on their tail while they frantically try to get away from you and holding them upside down by the tail is NOT acceptable. Stop it! It’s cruel and it reminds me of someone pulling on a cats tail just to keep them in place.
