There is a fascinating overlap between anthropology and evolutionary biology when it comes to the subject of fireside, communal eating.
The act of gathering around a fire together and eating shared meals is thought to have been a key part of human evolution in ways we do not fully understand and may never understand.
Through this process it allowed us to further develop speech skills into languages, it helped develop our moral priorities and self of social inclusion. It allowed us to develop mythologies and stories to describe ourselves, we created our first gods together around the fire place, the spirits of the earth (including fire itself) and went on to develope all of our other religions together as a congregation around other fires and meals.
This tradition of communal eating followed humanity for hundreds of thousands of years right through into modern history in the form of sitting around a table and eating a meal together as a family (often with a fire going on in the background), community BBQs and village hall tea and biscuits etc. The sharing of food and drink together is an integral part of who we are and how we express ourselves.
The decline in "breaking bread" with eachother and sitting down as a group to eat together may be a contributing factor to the mental health epidemic and loneliness. Our modern society has told us to shed many of these essential basic parts of who we are in the name of "productivity" or just plain capitalism.
We as humans are as much a social animal as dogs, cows, pigs and horses are. Other primates all show similar basic societal needs. It is just a part of who we are

Ramble of thoughts as I watch this (with line breaks!):
Steven Medway is such an amazing person. It's always such a treat to hear from him.
The story of The Tomb is so amazing. It's so great to hear these kinds of design stories. Really looking forward to the final version. (Excited for all three expansions, though.)
Felt-lining was one of the biggest selling points for me. It's such a cool feature. I can run a game and have an insane amount of info at my fingertips and not worry about messing it up.
I'm very strongly in the "No right way to play" camp. It's so fun to watch metas grow then get absolutely destroyed. The best games I've watched were meta-breaking.
Picking a favorite character is ROUGH. Even picking a favorite from each type would be tough. I often say Amnesiac is my favorite, but is it really? I don't know. Legion is probably fav. Demon.
"I'd rather have a slightly broken character that's fun." YES. 💯
MtG is a great reference because the official rules are really really dense and there's so much errata written for cards. (Shoutout to the card named R&D's Secret Lair.)
I love the soup analogy. I'm using that next time someone complains about a large group of characters (or a script) that breaks the game.
*Edit:* I wish the comment box actually showed me whether the text would wrap to the next line. I wanted this all to be line by line. TH-cam is so behind on formatting. 😒

@@ecggamers Like you, I strongly related to him talking about food. It's not just a means to an end. It's about the place, the situation, the people that prepared it for you (or the people you prepared it for), and so on. Really cool hearing about his other game designs too. Lawn of the Dead is solid gold and I hope it becomes an official thing.

I love that even Stephen fears the wrath of Edd. "Oh god Edd is gonna kill me!" When he forgot about the convention in April 😂

Hey! I'm curious how you guys play, with a specific discord integration and discord bot right? I'd like to look into setting it up in a friend's server, to see if we can't get some games in, is that possible?

    • @ecggamers

As time permits I would be happy to share. However in the meantime, you're all welcome to join the ECG Discord server and leverage any one of the many towns we have available, with full bot functionality.
I'd even be happy to create your own unique town for you! 💯
