I still mess up east and west sometimes but its easy to figure out for me. I just think of US History and the “westward expansion” of the 13 colonies. Kind of hard to mess it up as west is the only way you can go from original 13 colonies.

Though perhaps that has to do with the US placing more importance on individual states than a lot of other countries do with their prefectures and provinces

In my history class almost 20 years ago (ピエン), I had a pass-or-fail test (that is to say, get one question wrong and it's an automatic fail) where I had to list every state on a blank map, the name of the capital, and the capital's general location. I assume Japan doesn't have a similar test.
